Some of you may remember when I was working on a batty animation project involving Ring Man from MegaMan 4. No one was able to help me on this at the time, especially given it's scope.

Well, I've been refining it lately, and the gears are finally in motion. Though, instead of an animated Flash series, which I will save for something else, it shall be an eight-chapter, manga tone graphic novel starring Ring Man in his attempt to build a Variable Weapon System to defeat Mega Man in battle at long last.

To keep things a bit more sensical, I am toning down the randomness a bit (No Conan O Brien cameo or dominatrix Wily). But by God, you WILL be seeing Freeze Man dressed as a sandwich commanding a giant ice cream.

Now, before you jump about, I will only be writing it. I shan't be implementing my little blue lineart style, I'm afraid. So, who is taking care of the art?

This guy. (http://www.dzarchive.com/iragination/index.php)

I look forward to prodiving the most redardedly awesome piece of MegaMan fiction in the history of redardedly awesome MegaMan fictionary.

In the coming months, look out for...

yup, as I said on AIM, I think its hilarious you've got one of the most talented megaman fan artists in the world illustrating such an insane thing.

I would be way more impressed if he did not use the easy style of the classic MM universe and not the lengends one. Because if he did that, it would show some major skillZ!

upon looking further into the site I can say he has some nice coloring happening. good flash intro as well.

I'll get excited when I see some work produced. 'Cause I know that your idea is a good one, but hard to impliment. I had dreams of working on it once, which did not work out, and lead to quite the falling out as I recall.

RPGD

Rather odd. You dreamt about that?

What was I wearing?

The first chapter's script is currently being refined.

If I decide to add Ryner, you WILL be seeing him in combat. But not until the 4th or 5th chapter or so.

Figure it's time for an update.

The script for the first chapter is just about complete. We'll begin the art process within the next few days.

Once the chapter's done, it shall be uploaded for you dingbats to enjoy.

In the meantime, here are some preliminary sketches:

I think the lettering could be tweaked a bit more. I'm not big on typography (hated those classes), but the type isn't as readable as it should be. The spacing between the letters on that font (at that size) is odd, and some of the letters run together. It makes the type look muddy to me.

Is the image you posted shown at 100%? If not, you can probably disregard this suggestion.

RPGD, I'll watch GM productions. This seems like it'll be funny stuff (freeze man sandwich says it all.)

RPGD
03-15-2006, 04:32 PM
Hmm... still not legible enough? How is the image displaying for you? Is it about 600X877?

If it is, then it is indeed at full size. That isn't a 100% final page, however. The bubble positions will differ in the finalized version. But I think I can give the font size an extra kick if necessary.

Thank God for Photoshop.

Will Freeze Man Sandwich be in the first chapter?

RPGD

No, I'm afraid. The first chapter is an introduction, so it's much lower on the battiness scale in contrast to the rest. Gotta start somewhere, though.

RPGD
04-03-2006, 07:33 PM
Begin Integral Update:

The art is 100% complete! And not a moment too soon, either. All that remains is the lettering.

Which leads to some bad news. My Toshiba E15-AV101 Qosmio laptop is crapping out on me in a big way. Now I have to do the lettering all over again...

Fortunately, I'll be picking up a MacBook Pro tomorrow, so not only will I be able to continue the lettering, but I can make double-time progress thanks to Mac OS X's more PS-friendly environment. Yay!

IRA's job's done. Now it's time for me to do MY Ring Thing.

Don't be silly, Hito. All of the art would take two years or more to finish. This is just the first chapter.

Actually, it is. But the problem can be solved easily via system recovery. I just wanted an excuse to get a MacBook Pro.

I like it so far. It's interesting and weird, so I'll keep reading.

My one problem is with the sound effects. They do the job, but I wish you had some that were done by hand, just to match the art style. It's a small, trivial thing, and it probably only bothers me. :p

RPGD
04-28-2006, 05:34 PM
Thanks!

I'll think about that SFX thing. It'll cost quite a bit extra, though, and I'm already paying plenty per chapter on average without any lettering, but I may go through with it. I like the digital SFX, however. The gradients are nifty with the grayscale art, and I can make modifications whenever I want. Most of the SFX you see were added/replaced a couple of months after the script was written.

I have to say that intros a friggin' hard to write. There's so much the guys can do, but I can't do anything unless I lay the groundwork. That's when I came up with Ring Man's dramatic entrance.

Now that that's over, I can crank up the battiness a notch.

Production of the second chapter shall begin in May. It should be done by July.

All that work, and you only were able to complete one B&W chapter... Not that I have any idea how long it takes to make a comic. Nor did I have any idea it was so expensive. "Some 40-year-old dude who lives with his mom." I can see why.

RPGD

All that work, and you only were able to complete one B&W chapter... Not that I have any idea how long it takes to make a comic. Nor did I have any idea it was so expensive.

The average professional US comic artist can produce about a page a day (pencils ONLY). 22 pages make up your average monthly comic.

Unless you are working with a major company, it will take a lot longer than a month to produce one comic. You don't have access to their production staff (inkers, letterer, editor, colorist, etc) or their resources (art supplies- paper, printing, etc).

It's an expensive process because of how involved/committed the artist has to be. It will be something they have to work on for about 8 hours+ everyday, if they have no other obligations. Usually, they have to work on 11x17 bristol or blue line pro pages, which are much larger than the printed (or viewed) results.

The bottom line is: Making your own comic is a lot of hard work.

Fushigi na Renamon
05-06-2006, 01:22 PM
Yus, making one's own comic takes extreme dedication. o_o Which is why I haven't done any serious comics, cuz I'm lazy. XD

I applaud you on your script, o RPGD. That was a great read! I wasn't always sure what was going on, but there were so many great concepts. I especially liked Solid Ringman. *snerk*

I agree with Nix on the sound effects. There are so many, and they are kind of wonky and overpowering. Maybe make them a bit smaller or something?

RPGD
05-06-2006, 01:30 PM
Okay, everyone, clean up your desks, 'cause work on the second chapter has begun.

Now that the introduction is over, this chapter will answer the questions left by the first chapter and bring the basic plot to light.

Yes, there is a plot.

In July, keep your eyes peeled for The Ring Thing, Chapter Two: The Scheme Is On!

RPGD
10-14-2008, 06:58 PM
Hey, kids. Just wanted to let everyone know that the project is no longer on hiatus. I've been sitting on the second chapter for a couple of years now (it was done towards the end of 2006), thinking hard about where the series was going. During this time I had learned a great deal about the professional comic creation process; writing, penciling, inking, lettering, etc., and can now see quite a few things in both chapters where I could have done a much better job, especially the SFX; they seemed lovely to me at the time, but now I think they're a nightmare (also I am bewildered by my overall behavior when posting back then. What in God's name was I thinking?).

In the end, I decided to restructure the whole thing. You will be seeing a completely revamped first chapter, and a brand new story. Maybe even new character designs. We'll see how that goes.

One thing I can guarantee, however, is that it will still be fairly surreal. That won't change.

Preproduction will begin soon. See you on the opposite end of the ring!

Boomerang!
