The official "I've got RPGMAker 3" thread.

Yes I did pick it up. I'm about to put the disc in and check it out, so thoughts on it later. I did notice though that it allows you to use the HDD. Nice choice!

I picked it up today and have been fumbling around with it... I'm still not sure exactly what the limitations are, and I'm looking for a manual to read before I get too involved with the editor. Gamestop said no official guide will be released and since it's new, I doubt there are too many things floating around just yet. I'm working mostly in the world editor trying to figure out how to create continental land masses, if I can do that at all... it seems like everything is built from scratch, so I'm guessing I have some control over it... but I haven't figure out how much. I'm gonna fish around the forums looking for any helpful info I can find.

It's mine. So now, I'm officially better than 90% of the RPG Maker community.

I see why there will be no strat guide for this, I can already forsee writing a FAQ on this in about 2 weeks and I only spent 2 hours on it.

I've been playing the sample game mostly. Since I can't save on it (UH... ) I'm going to go dump it and try the actual editor. But to tell the truth, from what I've seen so far, I think I'm going to have mixed feelings about it. Depends really on if I can make things work the way I want em to. (Not sure if i'm going to like storyteller mode).

to save in the sample game, you first have to save the database in the editor.

Re: The official "I've got RPGMAker 3" thread.

              I got it yesterday.Here's a mini-review:
I like it, don't regret the $80. (didn't you get a new mem card?). I notice that it lacks a random feature in the events. I have a possible workaround in mind, we'll see... I'll take variables over random, but both should have been included.
It could use a few more palette swaps in the 3-D models, especially monsters. And two of the characters are cheerleaders using color scheme 4. (honest) The number of 3-D models to choose from is, imo, enough, but barely. In this type of game, more is better, and I wouldn't give it points for the # of chars/monsters--but neither would I dock it any for too few. Entirely subjective, I know. There are several animations to assign to characters, though. The number of 2-D character pics is impressive, coupled with the modest but quite useful and easy storyteller is a good feature.
Onto items--300 items would be enough, except that any particular item can only be equiped by 5 characters (can't be set by class). That means if you have too many more than that (or you want to use very many characters as enemies) you'll porbably use many items as armors. Well-- oh well. At least every weapon can have a graphic choice, between 4 and 10. (note that armor changes won't change in battle appearance, I THINK weapons DO).
Skill editor looks good, but I'll provide the caveat that I took one look at VFX edirot i RPGM2 and decided to stick with the samples. You're limited, but it's easy nd you have good choices. But you do have about 6 animations for the characters themselves to perform. (2-3 magic, 2-3 attack, throw, use item)
Field editor will take a good bit of work, (and to be perfectly honest, will look a little drab compared to newer comp games, of course.) but it will be easy work, if that makes sense. It will be clear what to do to make the land you have in mind, and most will enjoy the process. I like the dungeon editor. VERY easy, yet quite nice. Again, might be drab if you make your dungeons too big. make them smaller, and use lots of decorations, is my advice.
Haven't done too much more with events. I notice that characters can be given dialoge apart from event text--I have to investigate which happens first, or when one takes precedence. Different npc actions or events for night time can be set up easily. Lots and lots of variables to use, it looks like--like, 60 per map+ 60 per character? I need to check if internal variables can always be used, seems like a great amount are there. And a variable is worth 100 switches!
I'd advise you to pick this up if money isn't too tight. Play with it for a few hours, see what you can do with it--then make your story!

Re: The official "I've got RPGMAker 3" thread.

I picked up RPGM3 this afternoon at Gamestop. Another guy bought two copies and the clerk said that they had six preorders, which surprised me. I didn't think that it was that popular. Good news for Agetec, I'm sure.

So far I haven't done very much, just tinkered with the dungeon editor and looked at the models. From what I've seen in the sample game...I think that you will really, really need to have strong writing skills to make a decent game with RPG Maker 3. The cutscenes are very bland and your narration and scripting will make or break it. This seems obvious, but in other RPGMs you could animate the characters and make them visually expressive, which is not the case here.

Overall I'm waiting to see what everyone comes up with! I expect to see some clever things to bring a little more life into what's there.

Ok ok, I'm really trying to give it a chance but I'm not really sure about this one.

The whole fantasy atmosphere is really confining. But I think some really interesting things will come out of it. I eager to see what people come up with as long as it's not "Boy's village gets destroyed by evil empire he seeks revenge as the confined evil's seal weakens and so on"

I am going for supernatural ghost story. The cutscenes are going to really work for me.

You could do a decent dating game as well with it too. Which I might do in the future.
