    A Few Dumb-ish Questions About My Game!

    First of all, it seems to me that many people are pretty disinterested by RPGM2 games that don't use a CBS. Are there still a lot of people out there who would download and play a game that simply used the included battle system of RPGM2? I ask this because I really don't want to try and construct a CBS. I simply want to tell a story. So am I the only person who still digs the traditional "Dragon Warrior" approach to battles?

    Also, I've finally built up a little bit of the necessary courage to post my game idea on here. My game hasn't got a title, because I like to wait until I'm close to completion (which really has only happened twice as far as RPGM goes.). My main theme is about abandoning the ideas of "Good, Neutral, Evil, and the Balance" that seems to confine so many stories and present the notion of "Free Will." Do y'all know what I mean when I say "All those who are good have a dark side, and all those who are evil believe they are good?"

    The game will open on a young man named Taylor Greene, who lives in a tiny town in Colorado. He works at J's, a floral shop. Taylor has the unique ability to cause any kind of flower to grow in any type of environment. He also has the ability to create dancing lights, which he doesn't reveal to anybody because, well, they really don't do anything and he's afraid to scare people.

    One evening, while closing up at J's by himself, his dancing lights begin to appear around him on their own. They slowly form the image of an auburn-haired man dressed in simple peasant's clothing.

    "Aren't you going to help them?" The man asks him. Taylor is confused, but the man persists with "If someone is in danger, you should help them." Then he fades away.

    As Taylor heads home that night, he sees smoke and from several blocks away finds that his apartment building is burning with black fire and that a large purple light is glaring from the rooftop. He and other community members watch helplessly as the local police are transformed into hideous beasts by the black fire.

    "Aren't you going to help them?" The ghostly man's voice rings in his head just as he hears several cries for help coming from inside the building along with the barking of his own dog. Without a second thought, he plunges into the burning apartment building. He is promptly attacked by monsters and, weaponless, is forced to run to his own apartment.


    The first dungeon is the apartment building. Going to Taylor's apartment will grant you your second party member; his hound, Blackfoot. Taylor will also find a kitchen knife, which is a pretty good starting weapon, you know? If you want, you can proceed directly to the roof, but there are five people trapped in the building. Helping them leave the building will net you rewards, so it's not a bad idea to save them.

    Taylor exits onto the roof to find a woman who looks like an angel standing before a large purple "dome" of light.

    "I am Huntress, the demon one who can travel between worlds." She says to him. "I come seeking Aidon."

    After a conversation about how Huntress will destroy everything in order to find Aidon, Taylor is forced to fight her. She wins easily, and is about to finish Taylor and Blackfoot off when the mysterious man appears to him again.

    "Do not fear your light." He says. "This demon can be driven away with the power of your Divine Light." Taylor focuses his dancing lights and learns to attack with them. He enters battle with Huntress again, and this time wins. After the battle, Huntress backs away from him, almost afraid.

    "You who wield the powers of Aidon, yet are not Aidon. Who are you?" She backs into the purple light and is gone. Blackfoot chases her, forcing Taylor to chase him (because dogs can be very stupid, but people who own dogs can be even more stupid.).

    Taylor and Blackfoot now find themselves in the center of a vast field with a clear daytime sky above them. They are in another world. A man on a horse approaches. He is tall, regal, and has dark red hair. He is the crown prince of Bandona, the Watchtower Kingdom. Their meeting is the true begining of Taylor's story.


    That's the rough opening scene of my game. As the story progresses, Taylor will learn the connection between Aidon and himself and be caught up in a war that has the lives of the people of Rhea and Earth hanging in the balance. He will also, of course, discover why Huntress was searching for Aidon, who she works for, and why Aidon is so important to the war that is breaking out in the world of Rhea.

    Some other characters are:

    AUSTRIN: The redheaded prince of Bandona. While he and Taylor fight a lot, the two build an unexplainable bond. Austrin seeks to protect Taylor at all costs, despite knowing why. The handsome Austrin is used to being obeyed, but also has a humble and kinder side. This is due to his youth being spent working beside his mother alongside the common folk in order to ease the pain of war on the people. When his older brother was killed in battle, Austrin was forced to join his father in leading the people to war.

    RODI: The apprentice of a prominent court Wizard in the kingdom of Lio. She seeks a cure for The Scourge, a disease that is slowly tearing away at her body. She comes from a criminal background and a criminal family, which may return to haunt her. Homely in appearance, she has an incredible willpower which can only be matched by her inability to connect to others.

    LENDRA: A dancer with a travelling minstrel troupe. Despite being nearly forty years old, her body and face carry great beauty and grace. She is cheerful and comical when dancing, but beneath is all lies her true purpose and a much darker, crueler personality. She is also seeking Taylor, the man from another world. However, despite her dark personality, her reasons for finding him might just save his life.

    So, that's all I'm going to post about it for now. The story may seem a little confusing, but I don't want to give too much of it away. I'll reveal more characters and plot if people seem interested in my game, so please feel free to comment and give me some constructive criticism and ideas! Also feel free to ask questions!

    The dialogue is hokey, but most people have trouble with dialogue. I'm one of them.

    Everything else sounds rather cliche, but it has been presented well and if your characters come to life even half as well as a game like Grandia II, then you've got yourself a winner. On storyline.

    The default battle system will deter some people, but not as many as will voice their distaste for the system. How far along are you in the production of this game?

      I'm close to completing most of my hand drawn maps and have completed several maps on the program itself. When I complete the maps, then I'll start scripting and adding events. The only scripts and events I have right now are the ones that moved you from one place to another, so I can walk around in my maps and make sure everything is groovy.

      I haven't started on actual dialogue yet, (which is why the dialogue I have in my little rough draft opening is kind of weak.) Of course it'll go through changes.

      The story itself is completed. It was wierd to write down the opener without explaining everything, but that would give too much away. I like to start with what seems like a normal setting with the "Find this person, Kill that person, Save the other person" formula. Then scratch off layers of the truth as the player plays in order to keep them asking questions and keep them playing.

          Don't worry about using the DBS for your first game.

          People (including me) will still play games made using the DBS.

          Just make sure to have good VFX for battle.

            The main problem with the default system is that you can't react to the enemies actions. You choose your actions, the enemies attack, you do your actions and the next round starts. In this way, a fast enemy could get too attacks before you can react.

            Example:
            Round 1: You choose Auto (party is at full health)
            Enemy is quicker then any of your party and attacks first.
            Enemy uses special attack and removes 80% of a characters HP.
            Party attacks enemy who survives

            Round 2: You choose to heal the dying character. That character defends.
            Enemy attacks and kills the damaged character.
            You waste healing on dead character.

            If you design the battles so that no enemy can do a lot of damage in one round and limit the total number of battles, using the DBS would be ok. Even with cool VFX, the DBS isn't very fun. Adding strategy to the game (ex. enemies that require special attacks, magic, or items to harm) might make the system more interesting.

            Your story is kind of interesting, but it doesn't say much about what your game play will be like. If you work hard to make the game interesting, I'll enjoy playing it. A good story goes a long way to overcome some of RPG Maker 2's other weaknesses.

              Honestly, gameplay will pretty much be default. Of course there will be lots of quizzes and puzzles, 'cuz I like them. I'm also a firm believer in plot being character driven, so most of my game will be focused on how the characters interact. I'll also post a few things about some of the NPCs and Enemies, if y'all want me to, so just let me know!

              A few special aspects of my game are:

              1) When the ghost-guy at the beginning talks to Taylor, he will ask a few questions about what it means to protect others and what's important to him. That answer will determine what ability path Taylor is set on. He's designed to be the main healer of the game, but certain choices can lead him down a path with more attack magic.

              2) One character is a channeler, making him kind of a swing character. By finding unresting spirits, he can channel them into himself, changing his stats, strengths, weaknesses, and current abilities. This will make it easier to find an enemy's weak point and exploit it. When certain quests are completed, however, some spirits may be laid to rest and lost. Laying a spirit to rest allows you to win some groovy rewards.

              3) Every character has to gain there abilities in different ways, not just by leveling up. There are a lot of hidden skills and spells for each character to find. Only the most powerful skills will require big ol' sidequests, though.

                Another Character!

                I've been toying around with a minor NPC and she's kind of made an impression on me! So much so that I've decided to make her playable from time to time!

                Princess Lieryn:
                Sister to Prince Austrin! She's the youngest of the three royal siblings, but with the eldest deceased, Austrin missing while he travels with Taylor, and her Father, King Brennet, mentally incapacitated (which happens toward the end of the first arc of the story), she is forced to lead the armies of the Watchtower Kingdom to war against the Rejin forces!
                Lieryn, with help from a few others, has to make tactical decisions a few times in the game. Depending on how her battles go and the outcomes of the choices she makes, certain paths or sidequests might open up for the main party. She can also send things via messenger to checkpoints and you can retrieve them and use them in your battles!
                For instance, liberating the port town of Z'Hava will result in Rejin forces pulling out of Lio, which lies farther inland. This opens up more, previously guarded areas of Lio for you to explore and thus opens up more of Lendra's backstory! Also, if Lieryn defeats certain enemies, such as the leader of a group, before the rest, they will retreat and she might get some powerful new weapons and armor, which she could send to Taylor and Austrin to help them!

                So, what do you think? Sound like a good addition to my game?

                  I think that's a good addition, but that's just me.

                  As for the DBS, the default way it's set up will keep me from playing any game including it. I've only liked OgreNix's setup for the DBS, it was nice, fast, looked decent and intuitive. Now that's a DBS I can stand.

                      I am with you. I am using the DBS, and makeing my game more about the story not the battle system. Now i have played 2 CBS' that were really cool, Dungeon Wardens and the system from Broad Sword ( the games ok but the battle system was really fun) So when i get the game done i might toy with the battle system, but for me story is way more important. Besides Dragon Quest has been one of the best RPG series out there for a long time on the same battle system. I have put in some mini games and puzzles that are cool too. And i suck big time with dialogue. Does anyone have some good tips for writeing good dialouge? I like the sound of your story, I would play your game when it comes out.

                        I played Nashes CBS in his zelda game. It was pretty good for RPGM2, but why go thru all that trouble for results like that?

                          Check out your local bookstore for how to write interesting dialogue. If you can't find anything, check out any good TV drama. I won't tell you what to watch, as what is good to you, is not good to everyone. Listen to how they talk, and maybe even tape it and write it down. Look at the interplay of the actors, and understand that all of that was written down in script form. Yeah, some may have been added in by the actors, and the emotions and facial expressions are theirs, but they mostly followed a prepared script.

                          Also, some comic books can have good dialogue. Some of the great classics, like Watchmen would be a good place to start. Anything by Brian Michael Bendis, as well, as he is considered the king of comics dialogue. You can check out his run on Ultimate Spider-Man for a taste.

                            Well, I'm not exactly sure how to make the DBS faster and more exciting! Haha! I'm just trying to make the visual effects as cool as I can!

                            Also, I'm glad there's someone out there who values a story over a battle system!

                            Well, I've gotta head to work now! I think that my game has a lot of special features as far as individual characters go, but does anybody have any suggestions or see any ideas they don't like? Please reply!
