    Thinking about doing...

A monster-hunting/quest doing/ linear, quick sort of game. Got some ideas, but could use some ideas if anyone's interested. Please and thank you!

If this is a first project, then I think something rather simple like that is a good idea.

However, as far as making a monster-hunting game, RM3 might not be quite up to snuff. Sure you can make it a challenge to find a rare monster, but what happens when you find one? You can fight it, but then what? The monster can't join your party unless it's one like 12 different "monster" models (which also include "dog", "chicken", and "gorilla"), you can't keep them in a pen on your farm, you can't interact with them at all outside of battle.

However, you can have some sort of trophy room in your HQ. The room could be filled with pedestals, and when you found a monster, a trophy could appear on it...or a gemstone or something.

That's not the same as Monster Hunter at all, but I was trying hard.

Haha I didn't mean a Monster Hunter type of game, I meant a monster hunter type of game, if you understand what I mean lol. But thanks, I like the trophy idea, I'll probably use that for boss monsters or something. Anything? C'mon, I'm feeling inspired!!

Obi, I don't think he meant a "Monster Hunter" game, as in the series. I think he meant some kind of game that revolves around it!

That said, I agree with Obi, RPGM3 isn't the best medium for this... I mean, there's not alot you can do with the system already, BUT, if you're making a small game, it shouldn't be too bad. However, you won't be able to do alot in regards to anything outside.

I'd be happy to offer some ideas if you can be more specific about what you plan to do.

But I think this kind of game works really well with some sort of Item Creation system. Use a big chunk of your items (I forget whether the limit is 100 or 300 on RM3) to create drops from the monsters that can be used in your Item Creation system as Input, and create some cool, rare, useful items that you can receive as output. Use a lot of creativity and try to use the items to describe your setting and your world. I've recently made a few posts detailing one way to set this up; let me know if you want further help.

            Re: Thinking about doing...

Well here's what i've kinda been thinking: There will be about 20 main quests that you need to beat the game (so 20 monsters to kill), and about 5-10 optional quests to help make your character stronger. You get to pick among 4 different classes, all male sorry lol. I'm not really sure which kinds of classes, so suggestions would be great. The town/city thing where you get your quests will be where you basically spend the entire game, divided up into 4 different districts (By just using different "towns" on the world map). I have lots more to say, but I can't really put it into words lol so you'll just have to see when i'm done Advice would be greatly appreciated.

What i think i'll be doing is have like 20-30 main quests you need to do to beat the game, then have about 20-30 optional quests to get stronger. Not really a story, the final boss is just going to be against the greatest Hunter in the land, to prove yourself worthy of his title. Whaddaya think?

It sounds like there's going to be a lot of battle time, which isn't something that appeals to most people in an RPG Maker 3 game.

I think you've got to consider what you want to do to make the experience fun and worthwhile for the player.

                  And please do share.

                    Re: Thinking about doing...

Well not just battles, but going and retrieving items for the person who gave you the quest. For example:

Quest #3: "Hollow Woods, Full Barrel"
-Objective: Retrieve the barrel of wine from Hollow Woods, and return it.
-Reward: Level 3 Key, First-Aid Kit.
                    -Location: Lodge- Housing District.

The location is where the person in need is, not where the destination of the quest is.

three posts in a row... without any kind of provocation... Are you trying for my job??

you could just have the monsters you have to kill a boss in a dungion and you have to fight your way down to them then have the people in the town be all thankfull to you for slaying these dangerous monsters.

Be sure to include puzzles if possible! With RPGM3, the game becomes dreary and boring after awhile (in most cases anyways...) and they are great things to spice up your game!

If you need any puzzle help or ideas for some, just personal message me! I have numerous great ones I've made in Terra Incognita that I'd be willing to share if you'd like. (Just be sure to give me credit. )

OK guys, I'm sure this has happened to all of you at some point; I lost all motivation and inspiration. What keeps you guys going to finish your games? Tell let me know some of you personal experiences, as it may apply to me.

One word: Interest. When people continue to post back and make positive contributions or just comments in general that's a big motivation booster for me. Request a game forum in the Tech Support forum as well, having one place for people to take about your game(s) is also helpful too!

Another key thing is too make make something you love, don't just make a game you kinda like, if you work on something you really want to do, it's rewarding to complete.

Set goals. What I like to do is make a list of weekly goals that I want to finish by the end of the week. That way, you can see the things you've accomplished as opposed to always thinking negatively.

If you feel like you don't want to work on it, then don't. Trying to force yourself will do nothing but make you lose interest further on it. It'll also do nothing but hurt your game in the end as well. Take whatever time you need off, and work on it again.

I find that taking time off is a great way to reinsert interest in yourself to finish it. With my current game, Terra Incognita, I've taken many breaks after finding myself uninspired only to come back and be eager to work on it again!

You can also try watching other people's games on Youtube or Viddler. It can really show you some interesting things people have done, and sometimes this can make you want to play the game and try these things out for yourself. Hell, even playing other games people have made can be a big help! (If you have the means of course.)

Trust me, I know about not finishing games: I'm still working on a game me and some friends started in 2004...
