    Stickied Help Thread for RPGM3

I was wondering, after seeing the mass amounts of posts people asking for scripting help, if I could get a stickied thread where people can post their needs with scripting. And I'll return with the exact specific script they need to use to accomplish whatever they're trying to do!

I think it would not only be beneficial for the noobs, but also declutter alot of these questions from the Workshop itself.

"LightningXIII's Scripting Workshop" would be an appropiate name or something. I don't know, but I would like to have a topic like this to not only to get some self-satisfaction, but also to help out the community!

*Note (This would be for the RPGM3 workshop.)

*Edit: I think newcomers would love this. I sure would've when I didn't know how to use it! It's nice to get more specific help by seeing everything laid out in front of you then to just have someone tell you what you need to do!

I appreciate the spirit in which this request was asked, but basically this is what already happens. People have a scripting problem, they come here, whoever has time right then helps them. We all help when we can. I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the questions people pose are related to scripting and variables in one way or another.

I'm not saying I'd necessarily be against the idea, but it would take an admin to grant your wish anyway.

Actually we mods have the power to Sticky/Unsticky threads too (took me a while to find as well - it's at the bottom of the subforum page, rather than on the thread itself).

We like getting posts in the workshop every so often and don't consider them clutter... that said, I think the idea of a "full script" service is pretty cool, since most questions and most answers just give the concept to use.

Feel free to go ahead and make the thread, Lightning. I think it needs to prove its usefulness before it gets stickied, but would be happy to sticky it at a later time if it becomes a lively topic.

Yeah, I only thought of it after I helped Spirit with something. I find when you ask for scripting help, people tend to just tell you what to do. I find it's sometimes confusing for the noobs, so I like laying it out for them, like exactly.

*Edit: I don't how busy it could really get, this forum is relatively dead outside of the few newcomers every so often and the Free Forum. I think I only know of a few people right now who are actually working on something, haha.

i was just reading through your post and you have no right to call anyone noob. you just got here yourself. that cleared up i think this is a bad idea. all pavillionites help anyone who asks here and i think that we should have threads for each topic. this keeps it from getting stagnant. also, if you want to know somthing use the search mecanism. everything conceivable has been discussed here and if you look, you will find.

the rule of stickies is less is more. if a topic can be easily found then its better to leave it be. if its very important and useful to many people and is getting easily lost due to low unneeded replies then it should be stickied and reevaluated every so often. i dont think this type of thread needs to be stickied, but doing so wouldnt hurt anyone either.

I sometimes do that out of lack of time for more indepth response, but I also hate to spoonfeed people. They don't learn anything that way, and they aren't really ever going to feel a real sense of accomplishment when someone else does all of the work for them. It's the whole "teach a man to fish..." thing. It's not like I willfully withhold information, I just don't spell things out as precisely as maybe someone else might that basically copies the lines of code in order. There are multiple ways of doing most things in RM3, and I don't pretend to know what will best suit someone's particular project or tastes.

That said, people are often wanting (whether they make that readily apparent or not) to just have the coding done for them so that they can move onto other aspects of game making that they find more enjoyable and/or fulfilling. I think those people would benefit from something like this, and I think they should have it. If it means that they won't make anything at all without it, then I say go for it.

Well said. I think if it can get that critical mass and hold a candle to, say, the tips & tricks thread, it will clearly be useful to a large percentage of forum readers and therefore will deserve a sticky.

Yeah, totally with you there, my friend. Most of the time I try to give just the approach, because when I write out a whole code block it can take an hour or more. And like you said, there are a lot of cases where one of three or four different approaches should be used depending on the setup of something else in their game.

I think seeing the code can "teach a man to fish" as well, though, if the man is a deductive learner. I do best when I figure things out in my own paradigm, but there are a lot of people who understand it better when they can see every detail in front of them and deduce what each is doing.

Well said... and yeah, I think if Lightning can provide that kind of instant gratification for someone who just wants to solve something that's frustrating them and move on, then he's really doing them a service.

Re: Stickied Help Thread for RPGM3

@Spirit, I meant noob in the sense of being able to use the game, I've only had an account here since October 2010, but I've been visiting here for alot longer than that. I'm highly proficient with RPG Maker 2 and 3, and getting used to RPGM1. (Which I got a month or so ago, and still haven't really touched...) as well as RPGM:XP...again.

This is more for a help-by-help basis as opposed to common problems like Pseudo-random NG's etc. I, myself, do not like using the search feature as you have to wait 30 seconds in-between searchs. Not that I'm that lazy, but I find it slightly annoying to have to wait if I want to immediately re-search something else, or word it differently.

Anyways, I think alot of people would totally benefit from this as well.

@Wave, you really don't like Spirit, do you?

Edit: @Spirit, you may have a couple of months here on me, but I still post more often than you. I'm also willing to bet I'm here alot more as well.

Edit: Did anyone make Xgamer424's game forum yet? He requested it like five days ago or something. Just wondering.

I don't wanna derail the topic but I feel this requires a response.

spirit of fate isn't a bad guy, and I mean that sincerely, but he has caused me more consternation in 100 posts than anyone at the Pavilion, because I think a lot of his posts contain some form of bull****, and because he thinks his opinion is a lot more important than I think it is.

I don't want him to go away, I just wish he'd be more honest with himself when posting.

I was surprised he is against this....considering I did exactly this for him like two days ago, hell, that was the reason I thought of it.

I still don't know if people are active enough to even require it, BUT, if I can help at least one person I'll happy.

Also...do you have the power to change the name of Game Forums? If so, could ya' change mine to Highwind Productions...I posted the wrong thing when I requested my game forum name change, and don't want to ask Valk to do it...again. Thanks.

*Edit: I have a question about the reputation system... How many points do you need do gain a little legoman head? Also, do you receive more rep if it's given by an Admin? I'm asking the second question because I went from 37-38 from one person, 38-39 from Spirit (ironically enough) and then from 39-46 from Gloom.

In the future, if you want your game forum name changed, make the request in the topic you made in tech support for your game forum. Not in some random topic like this.

You get one servbot head (we're going back to goblis soon) per 100 points. Users start at being able to give 1 point each, and it increases by 1 point every year their account is active. admins give a base of 5, with the same increase level. and again, this should have been in it's own topic.

And we're going back to Goblis? Sweet. I was wondering what happened to those eons ago.

Yeah, I clearly have no life as I'm attending University in preperation for medical school...clearly. If I had no life, would my spend at least three hours a day studying, plus more working (paying for Uni Housing/Food etc. as I'm not rich.) I use my free time here to get away from everything else.

Clearly, something you know nothing about...

This Pav is more than just people talking about video games, there are highly intellectual discussions that occur here, (see: Wikileaks Topic) that I find engrossing and mentally stimulating.

It's not like I spend 24 hours a day patrolling the Pav whilst eating Doritos and listening to Rush while polishing back a quart of fine scotch. (Though, that is classy.)

I now see what Wave was talking about...

Don't make stupid assumptions about people you clearly don't know.

*Edit: Dude, you're 13...what do you know about life?
