Just got my copy of RPGT DS (J)

So I bought a copy of RPGT DS.

I reread Valk's feature on RPGT DS, and figured I may as well buy a copy. I can hardly wait to try it out.

Being as I've been gone a while - has anyone else but Valk acquired a copy? Any other news/DLC/info that's cropped up in the past few months? Or am I just going to have to be surprised?

I think interest pretty much dropped as soon as we realized it wasn't coming. That, and the questionable method of trading games is off-putting.

DLC is still being updated. The last update was on the 20th. Currently five games up, a bunch of portraits, enemies, and characters too. 8 pages of content. There's also contest stuff for download in it's own section.

Their way of distributing DLC sucks. They cycle the old stuff off to make room for new stuff, and then it's gone forever. You have to download stuff to one of the two game slots you get too, so you do have very limited room to store things, and if you want something to use later that doesn't fit into the game you're making, and maybe you have the second slot being used to store a game you downloaded? Well, you're screwed.

they should just keep every damn thing up forever.

I think I'm the only one here who has it.

Also remember, it won't work on a US DSi. normal DS or DS Lite, yeah, it'll work fine on those. Just not the DSi.

Time to dust off my old DS Lite, then.

That's pretty sucky. Doesn't make any sense to come out with a bunch of stuff and then just take it all away. :/

Maybe there's some other way of keeping the extra data archived.

I look forward to hacking it when it gets here. There's probably all kinds of interesting tid-bits I'll be able to uncover.

I admittedly don't know much about the way the DS handles WiFi, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to take a look at the source code, and snoop on the TCP/IP packets, to reverse engineer the communications protocol the game uses to talk to the DLC server.

If I can do that, and get around the encryption on the network connection, then it may be possible to set up a rogue DLC server on the net, and serve up any arbitrary data one would want to any connecting copy of RPGT4.

I know people have tried something similar with the Pokemon games, without success. So, don't get your hopes up. :P

        That's my theory, anyway.

Isn't there a device made for the DS (ostensibly for legit purposes, but used for pirating) that will allow you to pull save files from the cart?

            Yes, there are several.

I actually have ordered two of them for that very purpose. Legit use... not pirating, that is.

The cheapest ones cost about twenty bucks, and boast tons of great features.

I'm thinking that would be the simplest and fastest way of keeping an archive of downloadable content. i.e. people would download the DLC, make a back-up of the save file, then upload it to a net archive where it would stay online in perpetuity.

That wouldn't require any hacking or any such stuff, so it ought to be pretty simple and straightforward.

Could be used for trading games to.

Once I get everything, I'll test it out.

Then if anyone wanted to play said games, they would just need to buy said device. Kinda like the Dex and Max drives for RPGM/2/3.

                Pretty much.

Still need to test it, though.

Re: RPGT DS On the Way for Thutmose

                  It's here.

I played around with it for about 5 minutes so far.

I've been able to load the sample game, and play it. Not sure why Valk had a problem with that goblin he mentioned in his RPGT4 DS article, but I was able to defeat him pretty quickly and make my way to the next segment of the sample game.

Though, immediately after the goblin, you face a much more powerful boss armed with a poison attack, and I haven't been able to defeat him yet.

Regardless, look forward to more info about this title in the future, as I learn more about it.

Nope. It's all in Japanese - and there are currently no plans I am aware of to release it in the US.

If you want a copy, you'll have to import one from Japan.

Just recorded my play-through of the RPGT DS sample game. I finished it. Valk got about half-way through, and the total play time clocks in at around 23 minutes.

I'll be posting the video once I finish it. Below are some screen-shot previews.

If you are wondering about that last screenshot - the top screen during most of the time is blank, just black. When play-testing a game, however, the top screen displays debugging information, lists events, switches, etc.

Here it is. My play-through of RPGT DS. I decided not to narrate it because, honestly, it's such a simple game that I doubt anyone would want to hear my inane comments about how you can press b or something to walk faster. Plus I'm really tired and my voice is a bit gravely right now...

I think it is pretty self explanatory, but feel free to ask any questions.
