Mac Comp Recommendation + iPad/iPhone App Development

So, for my new job, it looks like I'll be getting a chance to work with iPads. The company just bought a bunch of them and I'll probably be getting one, namely to investigate the feasibility of developing Apps that can integrate with the other materials we publish as well as stand-alone Apps. I've already been assigned to work on projects for every department in the company, so I'm sure as soon as the iPads come in there will be one waiting for me on my desk (plus I leave my iPad programming books out to give them the hint :P).

The iPad SDK is pretty interesting. There's all sorts of stuff you can do with it - it makes my mouth water. :P

I'm not an Apple person. I hate Mac OS X, it's a major PITA to use, doesn't do even the most simple tasks easily (I spent 15 minutes today trying to figure out how to get the full path to a file on the network - I gave up and just wrote an AppleScript that copied the path to the clipboard for me - there is no reason this should be so difficult). But, this isn't the "Macs are Garbage" thread, so I'll leave it at that.

But the iPad seems like it has so much potential, I'm really excited about getting a chance to develop some Apps for it. I've already bought and read two books about programming for the iPad and have several more on the way.

Now to get to my point - those of you who do have experience with Mac computers, what computer would you recommend for me to buy? I feel sick about having a Mac in my house, but you can only use the iPhone/iPad SDK on a Mac, so I don't have much choice.

I guess one of those Mac laptops would probably be the best bet; since they are portable I could take it with me to and from work, and to college with me too (along with my PC laptop).

I don't know anything about Mac laptops though. Other than they are freakin' expensive.

So any recommendations/tips for Mac computers/laptops?

Also - I think RPG Maker for the iPad would be pretty sweet. But that's another thread. Maybe after I finish Kupid 2.0 & DDR. ^_^

Mac Laptops work great, but are overly fragile. Not built for the sort of wear and tear a laptop normally gets.

I had other issues with it too.

If you want a detailed rant, see my post in the Macs are garbage thread.

No need to repeat all that here.

But I can say that their Desktops are Fantastic Machines!

    MOO!

      Hmm; thanks.

I'd kind of like a laptop so I'll have a portable system, but I already have a Mac at work. So maybe it would be better for me to just get a desktop for home.

I'll have to look into it some more,

      Thanks.

If you don't mind the lack of portability, there's a new-ish line of iMacs out now that should save you cash on a monitor. They come in two sizes, 21.5" and 27", and are cheaper than the Macbook Pros.

I haven't had much trouble with the Macbook Pros I've owned over the years (my newest one's a monster and works like a dream), but my four-year-old entry-level Macbook lasted me longer than any computer I've ever owned without upgrading; I traveled all over Europe with it and it took it like a champ. But either should do fine.

Okay, there was a lemon in the mix, but I got a free replacement!

I've had my current MacBook for two years, dual-booting XP, and I have not had a single real problem with it. Just little stuff: like the touchpad drivers for XP being crap.

If you're just using it for development, get the cheapest MacBook.

Or even buy a used one.

                  Thanks, everyone.

I took a look at the new Macbook Pros.... they look pretty cool. For a Mac, anyway.

I might just splurge and get myself one. :P

I don't know what projects I'll be working on in the future, so I'd kind of like to get the best I can afford (not a lot of options with a Mac).

I'll definitely have to save up some money for whatever I decide to buy. Might be easier once I find out what kind of pay increase comes with my promotion.

                      Thanks for the advice everyone.

I decided to just buy a new Macbook Pro.

I ordered the 15" one with the Intel Core i7 processor, along with the 64GB WiFi+3G iPad.

Can't wait till it all gets here. ^_^

Excellente. Let us know how things go.

Oh, yes, and if you would rather eat your first born child in front of your second born child than use Mac OS X a second longer than absolutely necessary, don't forget that you can dual boot Win 7.

I'm glad I seem to be the only one having fragility issues with one of those!

As I said - it does work great!

Just... Baby it!! In case you're as rough on these things as I am.

                            Will do.

Cool. I'll try and figure out how to do that.
