I was wondering if making a game was even worth the time...

Re: Is It Worth It To Make An RPG
the forum isnt indicative of game downloads. for example, whispers in the woods is now at 2050 downloads, which is far more than the active RPG Maker using population of this forum.
doyleman's zelda: sword of magic demo for RPGM2 is the most downloaded file at the site, at 2217. again, much higher than the the RPG Maker using population.

What Valk said. Plus, you never know, someone here might be willing to Let's Play it. That extends your audience even beyond RPGM owners."What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Imagine the best friendship that could be found there."

Re: Is It Worth It To Make An RPG
RPGs or a game made with RPG maker?
Like Valk said, there's no shortage of people downloading games. My recent demo of a platforing game I'm making has gotten over 20 downloads in about a month, and another platformer has almost 100 at the Mag.
You may not hear very often from the people playing your game, but people will play them.

Re: Is It Worth It To Make An RPG
More importantly, what do you wish to get out of making an RPGM game? I'm all about self-promotion and getting the word out about any creative endeavour I undertake, but I also believe in making a game because you want to make one, not because you want to check the download counter daily.
My second full game, A Series Aside, was made because I wanted to make it for myself. After playtesting my first game, I realized how tedious and boring RPGM3's default battle system could be, so I decided to make a very un-RPG game based around a bunch of angsty writings from my younger days. I thought there would be absolutely no "market" for something like this, and made it mostly because my strengths with the software are/were programming and storytelling. I'm horrible at graphics, and my first game showed this. So I wanted to build a game around my strengths, mostly to satisfy my own desire to come up with an idea (or ideas...in this case, all of the minigames), look at RPGM3's limitations, and work around those limitations in order to realize these ideas.
Funny thing is (and this seems to commonly be the case), the game I made for myself has more downloads than anything else I've uploaded to the site.
Long story a bit longer, if you're making a game because you have a story you want to tell, or because you wish to learn more about some basic coding and problem-solving, then by all means, make one. If you're making one to garner a bunch of downloads, or to show the Pavilion that, "Muse has turned over a new leaf," then I would honestly say don't bother.

Re: Is It Worth It To Make An RPG
Adding on to what everyone said, I found this site looking for games to play. I didn't join the forum until about 8 months after discovering it and using its tools and information. Or was it a year...
Anyway, I had already made my game before I discovered this site, and I didn't make it for strangers. I made it because I had time to kill because I was moving to France the next month. I was cooped up in a tiny apartment in Atlanta while my friends were still in school 50 miles away, so the boredom and month deadline to show some friends my game gave me a drive to make it.
Everyone has their reasons for making games. Since I'll be leaving the country again by the end of this year, who knows, I may finish the two games I'm working on now.
