    Corel Painter 11

My dad purchased this for me, and says that his buddies at work claims it's better than photoshop.

Have any of you used it?
    -If so, yay or nay?
    -Good qualities?
    -Bad qualities?
    -Extra whatnot?

My friend (who painted my snowman picture) prefers it over Photoshop. I guess it's more like working with real paint.

Sejon also uses if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think it's any worse than Photoshop, at least in regards to digital painting.

      Indeed, I love Corel Painter!

But I wouldn't consider it a replacement to Photoshop. More often than not, I work with Painter and then take the file to Photoshop for finishing touches (Painter can save in .psd which makes the transition easy). It's great for building a painterly base.

It has some nice features. Textured surfaces, more intuitive way to work considering it tries its very best to mimic real paints, a whole slew of various brushes, and just a more natural feel in general.

The downside is that some brushes (especially oils and watercolours) slow down my computer dramatically, to the point of utter impracticality, so I avoid them. I still feel it's off the mark in terms of emulating real paints, but I see it as a more balanced compromise between digital and traditional art than Photoshop is.

I think you'll like it -- but it might take a lot of playing around to warm up to it, just from the vast selection of brushes alone.

Corel Painter and Photoshop are compliments to one another. There are some things that Photoshop can do that Painter can't, and vice versa. Photoshop excels at photo manipulation, special effects, technical aspects of digital image editing, and so on. But, where Painter really shines, is the creation of digital artwork which mimics art created with traditional media (of course you can do a lot more with it than that and you are not limited to traditional media emulation). You can take artwork you make in Painter, then apply finishing touches in Photoshop - or the other way around; the two programs work great together.

If you have a Wacom tablet, then Painter is your best friend in the world. You can create pretty much anything in Painter that you could with real ink, paint, chalk, etc. There is a bit of a learning curve, like with Photoshop (and having some artistic talent certainly helps), but the sky's the limit once you figure out how it all works.

There's a great introductory book you might want to pick up: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1598638939. It covers the basics, more traditional techniques, as well as contemporary mixed-media techniques. So if you're just starting out with Painter, that's probably the best bet - if you're the autodidactic type.

If you want a more general book that covers Painter + Photoshop, and talks about the abosolute basics of digital tablet art, then http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321168917 would be good, too.

And for more advanced techniques, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470284935 is pretty good. There are lots of others, though.

Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I'm trying to learn digital painting, so I've been buying and reading lots of books and materials on the subject.

It's grand, to be sure. It even has a mixing palette.

I only dabbed in it though, and I can't say it's better/worse than Photoshop. Probably better than GIMP though. I'm really interested in seeing how well it does watercolors. I've always wanted to try out the Bill Watterson style of comics.

I've really don't know much about Corel Painter Though i prefer using Photoshop Elements (currently using version 8) since i've been using it in my artwork and a lot cheaper than the ridiculously expensive CS series.

But i do wonder how much does Corel Painter cost?

That's not a bad price compared to spending $600 dollars for Photoshop CS.

@Adrian - That's much better than my first "drawings" -

I suck at drawing, anyway. >_<
