    We The Brave Gameplay Example

In We The Brave, the events of the game are broken into ten days. With the exception of the prologue (Day 0, I suppose), most of the days will follow the same basic structure. I think the best way to explain is to give an example.

So its day eight. You've been working alongside the resistance and needling The Lords for quite a while now, and some areas have increased security. Some NPC's may be suspicious of you depending on how you've handled conversations with them. Other NPC's may be more open to you and sympathetic of the resistance movement, who call themselves The Brave, because of your words and actions. You'll have made friends and enemies.

After you awake, you make your way to the resistance's meeting house and talk to the leader and coordinator; he asks you which section of the city you want to focus on today. You read the six choices (see story thread) and choose The Stalls, the equivalent of the merchant district. A party member and fellow member of The Brave interjects that today there is to be a speech given by the Lord of the Stalls, at the funeral of the previous Lord, who was poisoned a few days before the events of the game.

At this point you are presented with two choices. One path promises a direct, forthright approach to disrupting the funeral; simply run up to The Lord while he's speaking and commandeer his listening audience. Sounds good. It lets you weaken the people's respect for The Lord, and gives you the opportunity to give a speech of your own, possibly converting some of the people if done well. But if you so blatantly reveal yourself...well, fighting is bound to ensue. The Lord is sure to have some sort of guards. And if you do steal the proverbial mic, then the pressures on; if your speech isn't well received, then this path may hurt you more than it helps you.

The other option is to make his speech completely moot; and what better way to do that then by destroying the nearby Mausoleum building? After all, the only people buried in the Mausoleum are Lords from the past, and it's a symbol of the separation between the wealthy and the poor that The Brave are trying to do away with. Sounds pretty nice...might make a few people waver on their loyalty to The Lords, and it certainly is showy. Shoving your power in the face of authority is a time-honored tradition of Adolescents. But the only way into the mausoleum is through the trap-and-puzzle infested tunnels beneath the city...and once inside, you would have to face any challenge that presented itself.

    Decisions....Decisions....

So you decide to go for the speech. Okay. Now how is this going to go down?

You'll need to get near him, obviously. But as a resident of Wetworks, the poor district, even your Messenger's pass won't get you close to a Lord. So you'll have to acquire an Access Pass. You have a few friends in the City of Gold, where such passes are commonplace; or, conversely, surely someone in the industrial section of the city, The Pulsing Belt, would be able to make you a pass--earlier on, you had the option of befriending the owner of a small factory apposing the Grand Factory run by the Belt's Lord. Did you befriend her? If not, you had better hope that sweet item you got for dissing her is worth trying to bribe one out of the City of Gold residents.

And then you actually do this thing.

Blah blah, flash the pass at a few guards, saunter up to the Lord and...

Speech puzzle time! Go ahead, start spouting words--you'll fail. Hopefully, you've talked to the people attending the speech a few times before. They probably have some 'triggers', hot subjects that will either enrage or please them. Weave enough of those into your speech, and you may make The Brave a few new friends.

But before you can even finish, The Lords apparent lack of guards becomes understood; the statues to either side of the coffin are not merely ceremonial, but clockwork beasts made in The Belt. You fight them off and offer a parting ultimatum to the crown before fading back into the sewers and the shadows.

Yay! Quest complete! You managed to snag a few items off of The Lord when you shoved him aside, and maybe you made a few friends.

But you'll always wonder...what would have happened if I'd used a fake pass made by the factory owner? And what was in that locked Mausoleum that only The Lord's ever enter?

    -end example-

Most missions will follow this (rough) structure. Depending on the specifics of the mission, you may have certain criteria or restrictions placed on you. For instance, in this mission, you cannot access The Stalls until you have your pass; since the city is arranged in a circular fashion, you can still visit the rest of the city. But it makes traveling around harder and cuts you off from some item shops in The Stalls, which you might have needed something from for the battle.

Questions? Is anyone intrigued? Mystified? Horrified?

    There?

Sounds very good so far Mage. With a story like this it might be best to keep a game journal. If you don't have one already. If you need any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks! I'm not sure exactly what you mean but I will be starting a progress log sometime soon.
