Re: Disney buys Marvel for 4 Billion
There are only a handful of gigantic mega-corps that hide behind the guise of multi-corps that hide behind the guise of corps that hide behind the guise of stores/companies/restaurants.
It really is the top .1% controlling the 99% below it.
Disney buying Marvel doesn't mean much to me!...and that's why.

Re: Disney buys Marvel for 4 Billion
Pretty much this. Because Marvel wasn't previously owned by a parent company, they had free reign to license their property to anyone. Marvel is essentially a vault for licensing properties whereas DC is owned by Warner Bros.Originally posted by Perversion View PostI'm guessing it has more to do with the movie rights than it does the video game rights.
This is a huge hit against Universal Studios whom Disney is a major rival with. A good portion of Disney's money comes through theme parks and US owns the rights to Marvel's properties in the theme park industry. Since Marvel was bought out, the contracts will be good until they expire but when they do US will take a big hit unless they renew the contract (which isn't likely to happen without ridiculous amounts of cash) or remove Marvel Island and all ties to Marvel.
Disney hasn't been the squeaky clean company everyone expects since Walt himself died. Nobody actually gives a damn about comic books so I doubt they'll try to impose their will on the current line. As a comic book fan, this means a few things I'm looking forward too
1) Revival of Disney properties. I'm talking Carl Bark's epic Uncle Scrooge line.
2) Revival of classic Disney comics. Disney animators used to put out some top quality comics that have been out of print for half a century and I'd love to see those reprinted.
3) Four words; Pixar animated Power Pack.
4) Sora teaming up with Wolverine in the next Kingdom Hearts to take down Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil (okay, I don't care about KH seriesreally but I still wouldn't mind seeing this...)
5) Bigger budgets for Marvel movies. At World's End had a budget of 300 friggin million. Iron Man was half that.
6) Disney eventually getting fed up with the archaic, crappy direct market distribution through Diamond and either starting their own distribution network or at least rivaling Diamond.
For those that aren't up to speed with comic books, Diamond is a company designed to help companies big and small sell their products through the direct market. They deal in every nerdy hobby from comics to cardgames but unlike a normal distributor/publisher they don't ask for a big cut. Because of this, you and I can print our own material, store it, then sell it through Diamond keeping majority of the profit unlike a normal publisher.
This means small press publishers can survive the industry but dealing with Diamond is like trying to teach a cat to sit. They're slow, they can deny you distribution at the drop of a dime, they have terrible customer service, and they're prone to unnecessary delays. But they're the only distributor for comics in the direct market. Without them your only hope is to go through a publisher or try to do all the marketing and order forms yourself (lol).
If someone could topple Diamond or at least rival them it would mean they have to change some of their draconic policies. They've stood ontop for too long and it's time for some healthy competition.
Then again, nobody gives a damn about comics (comics? lol like peanuts? I LOVE THAT STRIP!) <- actual conversation with random strangerLast edited by marcus; 08-31-2009, 01:03 PM.

There was a revival of Gargoyles. Slave Labor currently has rights to publish new Disney comics but with this acquisition their revenue will likely take a hit.Originally posted by €huck View PostHopefully Greg Weisman can use his success with Spectacular Spider-man to leverage this deal into a revival of Gargoyles.
Now, a new Gargoyles series with serious funding to back it up? That'd be nice.

You sir, have just lost all of your credibility.Originally posted by salamander View PostI smell a monopoly brewing...It looks like we will all be ruled by Disney and Walmart one day. I always liked Dreamworks movies better anyway.Last edited by d2king10; 08-31-2009, 02:51 PM.
