Thinking on playing a Diablo-style game.

Diablo II doesn't work on my PC.

All I can really think of is... Baldur's Gate 1/2, or Champions 1/2 for the PS2. I played through quite a bit of the first Champions a while back with a rental and really enjoyed it. But I'd like to try something different.

I keep hearing wonderful things about Baldur's Gate. How does it play?

If you are up for a game like Diablo, Icewind Dale is a pretty good game. Plays just like Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 for the PC, but it is more of a dungeon crawler with a bit of story. I love the game, but it isn't exactly like BG as far as story goes. But you get to create a whole party of 6 characters and venture them around the north of the Forgotten Realms setting and has a lot of action. I recommend it for Diablo and BG players.

It depends on which Baldur's Gate you are refering to...PC or PS2?

The console versions? Exactly like Diablo right down to the concept of health and mana potions although they let you jump so there are environmental hazards like traps and pitfalls.

Sacred is another Diablo-clone as well as the Titan Quest series and Dungeon Siege. On the PS3 you've got their Untold Legends game which I haven't played but heard 90% of it is you smashing barrels.

Sorry to have to mention it again, as you've already given me crap about it at least once, but for a really good current-gen console Diablo-esque game, I'm telling you, Sacred 2 is the way to go.

Decently deep (for this genre, anyway) character customization (stat/spell-wise...all character models are preset), gorgeous visuals, rich, detailed gameworld, and an open world at that. PvE multiplayer, PvP....if you took Oblivion, made the character models attractive, put it in the third person, and made it a fun Diablo clone, this pretty much is that game.

The console versions are all hack-in-slash, and it's fun for what it lasts. The first game can be beaten in literally 3-4 hours. Haven't played the sequel but I'm guessing it plays the same. The PC games are more oriented around strategy and it is dialogue-intensive as to create a role-playing feel and heavily structured around the AD&D Second Edition ruleset.

              Sacred 2 was... ugh.

On PC or console? Because I've read the PC version is a bit underwhelming, and that the console version streamlines (not in a bad, "marcus is gonna complain about it being dumbed-down" way) everything, and improves the controls and playability.

Re: Thinking on playing a Daiblo-style game.

I haven't played the console version but the PC version is terribly balanced and requires a great foresight into the creation of your character because you can easily screw yourself.

Anyways, there's also Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom which for some strange reason departed the dynasty-warriors-but-with-actual-control-over-armies-and-tactics style to become a hack and slash.

edit: the original neverwinter nights campaign is also very diablo-ey. It's built around the DnD 3.0 system (which is broken as heck; paladin/sorcerer for the win) but when you die you're warped back to town, you're given a free warp-back-to-town object, and every enemy is carrying around a horde in magic items.

PC Baldurs Gate 2 is one of the best experiences I have had with any game. It's nothing like Diablo though.

But honestly, that shouldn't stop you from playing it.

BG2 for the console? Or the PC's BG:SOA & TOB?

I think Diablo is okay. It's a fun for what it is; kick in the door, kill the monsters, take the treasure. Its story is so weak, though. IMO, the friggin' Gauntlet series has a better background story than the Diablo series. But don't get me wrong, like I said, Diablo is one of the top dungeon-crawlers out there. Hell, Diablo II is still on shelves raking in profits... like KOEI is for their Warriors titles.

Oh, and BG and Diablo really play nothing alike. BG is more story-intensive and Diablo is more action-driven

Yeah, there tends to be no in-depth story in these type of games, but honestly, as I mentioned in probably a few other topics by this point, I tend to prefer games like Sacred 2 and Etrian Odyssey nowadays precisely BECAUSE they have no story to have to try to keep up with over the course of the year it would probably take to finish.

There's something to be said for mindless grinding and character-building.

Difference, though, Dallas, is that action-RPGs in the Diablo vein (Baldur's Gate, Sacred 2, Champions of Norrath, etc) are actually fun to play. Dynasty Warriors....not so much. I do have the first Kingdom Under Fire for the original Xbox, which is basically a medieval Dynasty Warriors with light strategy thrown in, and as decent as the game is, it got pretty old pretty quick.

I don't think mindless killing will ever grow old.
                              ...and that's why.
