ITT we talk of various things unrelated to my Sony fanboy-isms

Looking back over the past year of my gaming life, I cannot believe how much of a raging fanboy I've become. It never used to be like this. I think my first inkling that I MIGHT be a bit of a fanboy was with the Dreamcast. I supported the hell out of that system, both by purchasing the games and by proclaiming to anyone within earshot how superior it was to the PS2 in every way.

Then came the original Xbox, which I again supported, and to which I again proclaimed superiority over the PS2 juggernaut.

But I think those slight fanboy ripples on the face of the water were nothing compared to this tsunami that is my raging PS3 fanboy-ism.

I guess ever since the N64, I've just always kinda subconsciously supported the underdog console.

This is a cry for help. How do I look at the other consoles objectively when I really see nothing of major interest to a gamer of my age and tastes? Help me through this tough time, guys.

And I'm really, really seriously considering making this my last console cycle. I'm getting too old to continue trying to keep up.

PS3's a great system. nothing wrong with loving it.

but yeah, give the other consoles a chance. The Wii's library is getting really good this year and next, and 360, well, aside from the same multiplatform games that'll be on the PS3, there's Mass Effect 2, which will be awesome, and, um... halo, and uh, more halo. on the way. probably forever. oh, and facebook.

And Gears of War 2 and Left4Dead and Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2 is coming up too. C'mon, you're not even tryiiiing.

Also, not being a fanboy baby is easy when you do most of your gaming on the DS and PSP.

I was a fanboy when I had a Gamecube a long time ago.

        Now I just don't care.

I do prefer the 360 over PS3 most of the time though, since Live is leagues better than PSN in terms of features and ease of use. I don't play PS3 games with... Anyone. I occasionally get on and kill poeple for fun in Killzone 2. Other than that, Live is where it's at for online gaming. Hell, I've played my Wii online more than my PS3.

Not to say that I don't play my PS3, I play LBP a dickton, and own a decent amount of games for it.

Really though, I don't see the point of "rooting" for a console if you have all of them. I can easily understand if that's the only console you own, then yeah, you kind of have to be a fanboy I guess. You WANT to feel good about your purchase.

        Otherwise, you're a tard.

I play my PS3 most often because most of the high profile games on 360 are shooters or action games (like Halo and Lost Planet) that don't really interest me. You can have all the exclusives you want, but that doesn't make them instantly desirable. And I hate the idea of paying $50 a year to play online when PS3 is free when it comes to that.

are not exclusive. and L4D2 is making people angry.

and yeah, live is best for online games. psn is a disaster. LBP online co-op is a joke.

But they are something to look forward to for 360 if you have one already. SHEESH.

Or you can wait six months to a year for the P3 versions. :I

I used to like Sony in the PS2s day, now they're kinda up and down to much for me to follow.

I have decided to basically skip the current next gen systems (PS3/ 360/Wii). I don't know what it is, but something about all of the games just doesn't appeal to me as much as i thought they would. After owning a 360 for about a year, I recently sold it to buy a ps2 and a lot of games, and I must say, I am so much happier with the good ol' PS2. I think I'm a sony fanboy too, in that respect.

                      I didn't realize they're not exclusive. And I meant L4D1.

The N-Gage is still greatest of all. It's online is tons better than Live.

I agree. This generation just feels like mostly more of the same but bigger and prettier. Without some of the great games from the previous systems it's just kind of a letdown.

I only own a PS3 and this echoes my sentiments exactly. I play online rarely and wouldn't pay the extra fees for it. There are a handful of exclusives between the 360 and Wii that I'd like to play, but nothing I can't do without.

I kinda feel the opposite. If I'd bought each of the consoles, then I'd have to find exclusive titles for every console that justified the amount spent. Wii is kind of its own animal, so setting it aside, you're getting much more value for your buck if you buy either a 360 or a PS3, instead of both.
So you're a fish out of water...

Re: Anyone else notice how much of a Sony fanboy I am, and I AM late to the party.

The point of "rooting" for the PS3 is along the same lines as why I "rooted" for the Dreamcast and the original Xbox.

I chose the Dreamcast and gave the system my support because Sega was trying to do something different with the system that had never been really done on console before (online play and the VMU thing (take a part of your game with you on the go in handheld form, and in football games, as an example, the ability to call plays where your opponent cannot see what you are doing)). Plus, for the time, the graphics blew away what the PS2 was capable of, not that THAT's such a huge factor. But games like Shenmue, PSO, and Skies of Arcadia would not have been possible on the PS2.

As for the original Xbox, I supported that online play was now an established part of a console, as well as the testing of the waters with downloadable games and add-ons. And again, it was a graphically better-looking system than the PS2 and arguably the Gamecube (not that I'm a graphics whore by any stretch). And Microsoft was trying to break up the staid established monopoly that Nintendo and Sony had had on the industry for the almost decade prior.

Yeah, some of these things turned out for the better (indie developers (who do not need to invest millions into a product in order to sell millions of copies to recoup the initial investment, and are therefore more willing and able to take chances) getting a bigger distribution channel, online multiplayer, the social aspect of gaming via friends lists, etc) and some for the worse (nickel and dime add-ons, unfinished software pushed through and patched later, online multiplayer). But the Dreamcast began a revolution in gaming, and the Xbox refined it into something more than a gimmick.

That leads to the Xbox and the PS3. Xbox 360 took everything Microsoft learned from their "test" with the Xbox, refined it even more until it had a shiny, glossy finish on it, and pulled in the dabblers with "hardcore" shooters, gritty realism, and an area of pride with achievements. Unfortunately, in my estimation, the majority of what the Xbox 360 is doing is more of the same. It's the "safe" console of choice...not as "kiddie" as the Wii, and not as expensive and esoteric as the PS3. It's a mainstream game developer's wet dream.

Yeah, there are exceptions to this (Braid, the 1 vs 100 thing looks intriguing, among others), but for the most part, it seems as if Microsoft and its major developers (Eastern and Western) are only interested in shinier, "realer" or more intense versions of the same games we've all been playing since the N64/PSX days.

And that's why my "fanboy-ism" lies with the PS3. As stated in the walls of text above, I tend to give my support to a console manufacturer that tries (usually without success in its own generation) to sometimes subtly and sometimes radically change the gaming landscape as we've come to know it.

Just a few examples of the top of my head...first, as fail as it might be, Sony attempted to make the PS3 an integrated part of an entire entertainment setup. They tried this first with the PS2 to little success. But with an internet browser built in, wifi out of the box, user-replaceable hard drive, a high definition movie player without resorting to an add-on, and the capability of being able to run Linux, PS3 has everything I could possibly want from which to derive my entertainment. Yeah, most people only see it as something to play video games on (hence why I said "fail as it might be"), but the capability is there for someone to use it to its full potential.

Second, the games Sony chooses to support with their PSN downloadable service are for a large part testing the waters or sometimes doing a full-on cannonball into untested waters of seeing what games are capable of being. Obvious examples are Flower, Linger in Shadow (as flawed as it is), Noby Noby Boy (requiring a different kind of online cooperation), flOw, and to a lesser extent, PixelJunk Eden and Everyday Shooter. Hell, even some of the retail stuff coming out as exclusives (Heavy Rain and LittleBigPlanet being prime examples) seem to be trying to shift the paradigm just a bit without being TOO esoteric. And I'm not even gonna get into Home right now (again, flawed as most people think it is, I'm pretty sure this is merely a tentative stepping stone in the evolution of social interaction via gaming, as good or bad as that eventually turns out to be).

And of course, to draw the masses in, there's stuff like inFAMOUS, Resistance, and Killzone. It seems to me that this is a viable strategy; entice the masses with gorgeous eye candy shooters, give them some mainstream stuff as downloadable games, and have a bunch of quirky titles reasonably priced, and able to be shared (hell, ENCOURAGED BY SONY to be shared), and people MIGHT eventually come around to seeing that there IS gaming outside of beat 'em ups, shooters, racing games, etc, and that once they get a taste of something really and utterly DIFFERENT, they'll soon grow tired of "more of the same," and be willing to embrace titles that, if given enough support, just MIGHT change gaming as we know it (hopefully for the better) within the next one or two generations of consoles.

END OF LONG-WINDED DIATRIBE/MANIFESTO/WALL OF TEXT
