Three games I played the hell out of when I was young, but cannot remember their names. These are all arcade games.

First one was a lightgun game, but used a crossbow instead of a gun. It was mounted to the arcade unit itself (meaning, you could not lift it up and position it differently...you could only move it up and down and left to right), and there were villagers walking across a moat, across what I think was supposed to be hell (maybe...details are fuzzy) and you had to shoot all the bats and other enemies that were trying to kill them. If all the villagers died before making it across to their destination on the other side of the screen, you lost. This was probably from about 1985-1987.

The second one is a footrace with gnomes or elves or something. You could either play against someone else, or you raced against the computer. It was in a forest, and there were hidden shortcuts and stuff. It was kinda like a sidescrolling platformer, but you were racing to a finish line instead. Timeframe is probably about the same as the above.

The third one I played in college with some buddies. It was a 4 player sidescrolling brawler, and you fought on subway trains, in the city, etc. I just remember some guys on the subway trains using axes as weapons, and semi-recently had "discovered" Pink Floyd, and used to laugh at the song title, "Careful With That Axe, Eugene," so when we played the game, I always used to say, "Careful with that axe, second axe guy." The game had (for the time, at least) amazingly huge sprites. I really do not remember much more about this game, except that I played it around 1989-1991.

Thanks in advance.

"Careful with that axe, second axe guy."

The first game is Crossbow.

Don't know the second one.

The third one can anything. Pretty much every arcade beat 'em up took place in an urban area.

I'm pretty sure the beat em up is not Final Fight. Wasn't that only 2 player, anyway?

It's nothing that I remember ever having come out on a compilation in the intervening years. The only other thing I remember about it is is that some of the enemies had big mohawks and leather jackets, but as marcus alluded to, that really does not narrow it down so far.

I can remember a subway in Final Fight, and these guys in denim jackets with the sleeves cut off and with mohawks that tossed goddamn molotov cocktails at your ass... or is that a different game?

Final Fight had a subway stage but the enemies used pipes and knives, not axes (and I believe it was three player in the arcades)

Captain Commando had 4 players and I believe an underground subway stage but I don't remember the weapons it used. It could also be The Combatribes which had ridiculous future-punk enemies but not "huge sprites" and it was 3 player.

There were guys wearing hockey masks, Jason-style, maybe? Maybe those were the guys with the axes?

What do you remember about the racing game?

Rep for you, marcus, when I get home. That was indeed the game.

As for the "racing" game, I think there's probably only one game ever made that involes a footrace with gnomes or elves or whatever the hell they were.

But those sprites are small! Your memory sucks, Perv.

I'm going to need more to go by with the racing game. It's probably something I've heard of but your description is pretty vague. Do you remember the coin-op artwork? Was the game single screen or scrolling screen? Where there power ups or weapons?

I was getting it confused with this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladiator_(arcade_game)) (in terms of sprite size). I was gonna ask for the name of this one, too, but figured it might be a bit easier to find the name of online. I used to play this quite frequently as well.

I'm looking on Wikipedia right now to see if I can find the name of that stupid racing game. I thought it was called something really dumb and simple, like, Gnome Race, or something, but I'm apparently mistaken.

EDIT: Apparently, it's this (http://arcade.svatopluk.com/williams/mystic_marathon/). Why does this seem SO unimpressive now? I could have sworn it was a much better looking game back then.

The website I linked is a comprehensive list of every coin operated machine ever created (well, reported to have been created). If you can't find it there, it doesn't exist.

I ended up finding it, marcus.

But maybe you have an answer to this one...just checked Google, and I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but do you know if this game (Ikari II: Victory Road) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_Road_(arcade_game)) has ever been released on a compilation for a modern console in its arcade version? The NES version was a bit lacking, and it would be killer to play this again now that dual joysticks are standard on most modern consoles.

I'd rather avoid playing a ROM. I have an SNK collection for the Wii, but it's all Neo Geo stuff, and this is not on it.

EDIT: It's actually all arcade stuff, and it IS Volume 1, so there is hope yet that this will be released on a console at some point.

well? what's the name of it for crying out loud!

and no, ikari warriors series hasn't ever been released outside to the consoles outside the bad atari/nes version and it's a shame because they're really good games.

I edited my above post after you had posted to display the answer.

The NES version of Victory Road was not HORRIBLE. It WAS decently fun. Problem was, my main weapon of choice in the arcade game was the sword (kid without a lot of quarters plus not terribly great at avoiding the bullets equalled using the sword and quickly spinning the 8 direction joystick to deflect the bullets and slice into enemies). Unfortunately, the sword was pretty much unusable in the NES version, so I opted for the boomerang instead.

I DID like the shop mechanic that was not in the original arcade game, and for the NES, the graphics were pretty decent. But even though I bought it pretty much when it first came out, it was thoroughly underwhelming.

edit: or was it last year? i know i played mystic marathon at some point this decade!
