David Perry says it's coming. An actual developer says it's coming.
So I think it's actually happening.
This kills any interest I could have in a new-generation PSP.
I like packaged games. I like having a case, a manual. I like having a physical representation on my shelf that I know will still work 20 years from now no matter what happens to the system or company behind it.
with downloadable games, when the system is dead, you likely won't be able to go back and get games for it anymore, because the download service will probably be shut down.
downloadable games rarely come down in price, and looking at the current PSN PSP selection, cost the same amount as their retail versions, despite not having a case or manual. you pay the same for less.
I don't think I'd buy it. no UMD drive means no backwards compatability. they think that to take care of that, they'd put the entire PSP library up for download. meaning you would have to buy every ****ing game again, likely at full retail price.
I don't think retailers would sell the thing. they dont see much of a profit from game hardware sold as is, and this would guarantee that the customer isnt going to come back to the store to get games.
gamestop wouldnt come near it. no potential for used games, they won't be interested.
I like my PSP. I'm very happy to hear more new games are on the way this year and that the system isnt as dead as I thought it was. But I wouldnt be interested in this at all.
My dislike for downloadable games has pushed me away from virtual console titles and PSN and XBLA games. I like actually OWNING things. and you never actually own games you buy on those services. it's a license. they have no obligation to make the games available to you again if something causes you to lose them.
