Is this what us hard-core gamers really ment?

I was watching X-play on G4 a few days ago. They sent out a reporter to Nintendo's press conference, and the guy actually got to interview Reggie Fils-Aime for a few seconds. This isn't an exact quote, but is prett accurate regarding one of the things he said.

At E3 gamers were asking where are all the hard-core games at. And by hard-core they mean Mario and Zelda.
Do you believe this to be true? Meaning that do you think that's what gamers actually ment?

Personally, I don't really think so.

Hardcore gamers want **** that isn't mini-games, Brain Age, Wii Play or Wii Music.

We want ****ing games like there were on the SNES and sometimes the N64 and GameCube, goddammit. So, YES that means Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Kirby... Sin & Punishment 2 and Punch Out are steps in the right direction but those games are still just SHOOTAN AND WAGGLAN.

      ****.

edit: and yeah fine monster hunter pfft

To qualify as Hard core there must be at least 4 quarts of blood and two dismemberments at least every 30 minutes.
Find a dog, honk it's nose. If you are bothered by this sentence. I guess you're just not cool enough for the noses.

There's two different things that people tend to use "hardcore games" to mean. One way they just mean real games meant for real gamers which would include Mario and Zelda. The other way they mean gritty and/or gory games like GTA or MadWorld.

I always associated hardcore with games that use checkpoint save systems, feature lives and continues, and are really really hard.

You know, early NES games which 90% of them were arcade ports.

and now when people say "hardcore games" they're typically talking about whatever mass-audience stuff is targeting the college-age male casual gamer.

I generally define hardcore gamers as gamers that get the greatest joy from defeating a challenging game, whether the challenge is in playing against the game itself in single player, or beating other players in either score or direct competition.

Nowadays there really isn't such a thing as a hardcore game because casual gamers can just play every game on the lowest difficulty setting, while hardcore gamers are more willing to either start on, or move up to, the more challenging settings. Plus most games have either online competition or leaderboards to appeal to the hardcore gamer. Most "hardcore" games are actually just mainstream games.

Mario and Zelda are really poor examples of hardcore games because neither one is built to challenge the player. Back when Super Mario Brothers didn't have save points and kept score you could call them hardcore, because you couldn't just play them it 30 minute spurts and still finish, unless you left your console on constantly or used warps, and even then, if you ran out of lives you had to start from the world 1-1 all over again. Plus you could always say "This guy got this score. I'll try to beat him".

I like to think of myself as a hobbyist gamer (For lack of a better word), and I think most of the folks at the Pav are the same. I'm not all about pwning noobs or beating games that lesser players would put the controller through the TV screen in frustration over, but I also want a deeper experience than lining up falling blocks (Not to say I don't appreciate Tetris). Mario and Zelda are built for hobbyists, gamers who play for the unique experience. Unfortunately they are also as close to hardcore territory as the Wii gets outside the VC.

I also think a lot of gamers like to use the words "hardcore" and "good" interchangeably, which I think is what is happening in this instance.
