I called out from work without a real reason for the first time ever today

It's Blackberry's fault. I've only missed three full shifts of work in my whole life (INSANE hangover, family death, car problems; respectively) and now she goes and DARES me to call in to work today.

You see, that really presents a dillema for me: I ALWAYS take up a dare if it is presented to me face-to-face and if it will:

    A) Have a 90% or greater chance of not killing me
    B) Have a 90% or greater chance of not landing me in jail
    C) Not cost me more than $10
    D) Not end up getting me divorced

Although this one flirted with "C" because I think I might have made more than $10 had I gone to work, although with gas prices the way they are it would be close and I didn't feel like doing the math. It is a 62 mile round trip for me to go to work and this was a SHORT shift to begin with.

Long story you may or may not have read made short: I had to pretend like I was sick and not go to work today. Now I have to sit around and be bored playing WoW or going to see Batman again. Dammit!

So wait, you WOULD take a dare if it ended up with you getting divorced?!

What if I dared you not to get divorced? By the very nature of the dare there would have to be risk of you actually getting divorced no matter how insubstantial, but the entire purpose of the dare would to not get divorced. Would that be enough to get over your no divorce rule?

Geez, it's just a turn of phrase. Everyone here is so critical of colloquial language use.

I believe the phrase is "Called in to work." Your title doesn't make sense... it would mean you called Blackberry from work and told her you wouldn't be coming home.

                          Yeah, totally absurd.

Well, 2 others, Funk will say it a little over 4 months from now when he does the same exact thing I'm doing right now.

Clever. Not as clever as Czechs Mex's infinite loop re: , but clever nonetheless.

Your edit wasn't clever in the slightest bit.

And yeah, calling out of work to me indicates dialing 9 on the phone and getting an outside line.

And while we're on the subject, I always thought it was weird in Seinfeld when he'd talk about being "online at the grocery store," or "online at the bank," or whatever. Yeah, I know the internet wasn't really prevalent back then, but online to me indicates being connected to an ISP. I think he was trying to say, "in line at the grocery store."

Everyday speech doesn't have to make perfect grammatical sense as long as the people you're talking to will understand it. Maybe you always speak to everyone in perfectly grammatical sentences, but I certainly don't, and I feel like I'm still a relatively intelligent person.
