    How's work for you?

I wanted to have a discussion on how far you've gotten making or playing your RPG Maker 3 game. We all seem to be here, but not really discussing our games. I suppose I'll start:

I am making a game called Glistade. It features Zephyr, a decendant of the hero Valen, who fought against Glatose The Cursed Knight and his monster army in a war completely fueled by lust for land. 50 years later, Zephyr must find the Seven Holy Stones and lock Glatose away for good. With a faithful partner Gandolf the Dwarf, and a fuse shorter than a cocked gun, he ventures the world in an attempt to gain the stones and kill off the Cursed Knight. Glatose has tricks up his sleeve, though, including minions, and even volunteers that are not monsters, but working for them still. After Zephyr passes through the first dungeon, he is forced to hurt an old mayor, and thus later, is thrown into the Refugee category, and by that, I mean you must then continue your adventure with both the law and the evil Glatose on your tail. Not only that, but an ally, Kaitori the Ninja, is slain by Glatose's servant demon, Vernia, (Ver-ni(not ee)-a) resulting in heartache for his protegee, Diakove the Archer/Mage. You also must change your name in the midst of running from the law, and when things can't get worse, your new ally, Taijek the Samurai, and your other two allies, Gandolf and Diakove, are kidnapped by Glatose's Dark Knights. Being joined by a man only known as X, you must free your friends, but as you do, you lose the Stones you had to work so hard to find, and then, you must regain them, confront Glatose, and save the world from it falling to the monsters.

I'm halfway done, so I expect to be finished making the game by the end of next month.

    Re: How's work for you?

WOW... Okay, I'll try to not be as brutal as I usually am, but I mkae no promises:

Why are we always sealing away the greatest threats to life? This is kinda cliched. By kinda cliched, I mean horrifically, beyond recognition... Its a good place to start, but spice it up: Glatose becomes too powerful to simply seal away, but with the power of the 7 Holy Stones, you might be able to disrupt the evil energies just enough... you get the idea.

Why are there always Holy Stones? Not for nothing, but as Glatose wants the total destruction of everything, doesn't that somewhat make his (hers?) final goal also the destruction of itself? Well, then why not have multiple stones of different varities? You can have elemental (fire/ice/lightning) or religious (christian/jewish/muslim) or ore (iron/carbon/lithium) or famous figurines (Sephiroth/Magus/Jefferson) or whatever. This also opens up the ever popular (in FF) "Elemental Dungeons" or whatever other theme (or combination thereof) you decide upon.

Being that Glatose has so many followers, why do they not attempt a double cross? Instead of Diakove channeling rage over the lost Master Kaitori at Glatose, why not have the main hero be the target? "If it wasn't for you, my Master would still be alive!" Better yet, why not have Taijek be the mole? Who'd suspect the samurai (usually aligned with the forces of good) of being the center of our valiant heroes undoing? Or have X turn oput to be Glatose himself, and the Glatose that you just killed end up being some benevolent diety?

Why are the heroes always so gosh darn good? I like where you went with the whole pop-a-cap-in-da-mayor event, but why stop there? Give Zephyr the option of choosing his alignment/alliegance. You could kill Glatose, or you could go after Esotalg (the well known Goddes of the opposite of Glatose) instead.

Halfway? If you're halfway done, then you've spent one month already (give or take a month) and therefore have thoughtfully constructed and mapped out all the data for an entire epic-style RPG game, and have at least half of the following completed: weapons, items, armor, accessories, NPCs, PCs, monsters, dungeons, towns, bosses, spells, skills, bonus plot related items and anything else I maight have forgot to mention. If that is so, then my hat's off to you, my friend, as you've either rushed through at a breakneck speed, or have a relitivly short epic on your hands.

It could very well just be me, but I really like open-endedness in RPGs. I don't care if its as simple as like a gender choice (Male or Female?) or as in depth as actaully design your own hero from scratch and bust some skulls with your weapon of choice (Why not a gigantic pygmy shrew weilding a plastic pineapple shaped drinking straw? Why not indeed!) but this always seems to draw me into games more thanthe old standby of "kill that guy".

    Now, for my disclaimer:

The oponisons expressed in the preceeding statements were solely that of MagusMartovich and in no way are indicative of any body else's opinions whatsoever. They were offered as a means of constructive criticism and by reading the aforementioned post you are in way shape or form obligated to change any part of anything at all. Just because I do not favor a certain aspect of something doesn't mean that you or anybody else will agree with me. Also, not having the entire game (possible twists have come to mind while typing my critique) laid out in my lap, I may have sugested things that would ruin other, possibly better, ideas that for obvious reasons were not released to the general pulic at large.

In summation I would like to say that while your brief synopsys is not totally original, you have done better than "Bob - the ninja" so you earn points there. It also seems to me that this was not a drunken stupor fueled idea, more of a long-term realization of multiple ideas. That having been said, I do wish you the best of luck with your game!

      Re: How's work for you?

Well, I was about 30% done with my game, but recently decided I don't like it. Like, at all. I still like my story (as seen here), but the execution just doesn't sit well with me. Especially after hearing some of the great ideas being used by the other Pavvies. Basically I came to the conclusion I'm not, or rather was not, trying all that hard.

So I've scrapped it and started over. Right now I'm in the planning phase. Arguably the best idea i've come up with so far is multiple beginnings. You choose which of the characters you want to begin as. This determines where you start and the path you take. The idea is simplistic, and yet awesome. However, execution is going to be a *****.

          Re: How's work for you?

Magus, i didn't want you criticizing MY story, rather sharing YOURS. And besides, there IS a battle with Diakove, after being kidnapped, I'm planning on him changing sides, and then, in the end, joins the team again, but only because he finds that Glatose is just using him to disposeof Zephyr.

Secondly, Glatose's goal isn't the destruction of everything, rather, he wants any humans who rebel that fact he wants all the land and control, to die.

Third, the seven stones will end up not being strong enough. They will only weaken him, and then the stones will unlock a secret item with 99 uses, and max power. This may or may not be used for the final boss, it's up to the player to decide.

Also, (i'm answering all your questions) Zephyr isn't done. Every place he comes across, having to get the key to the next dungeon, he must defeat a good citizen, and in a future part of the game, he will kill the king and queen in order to retrieve a stone. Zephyr is more or less my game's Shadow The Hedgehog. He's willing to do good, but he'll easily step over the line if someone's in the way.

Finally, X formerly worked FOR Glatose, retrieving the stones to stop them from stopping HIM. After being tricked, betrayed, X helps Zephyr, but the stones are actually stolen from HIM. He then brings them to the king and queen, who then are killed by Zephyr and party to get them back.

I just want to say it is the OWNER'S RPG MAKER to decide upon what THEY want in their game, and what they don't. I'm even adding a twist that Glatose turns out to have an 8th stone, in which the final battle ensues, and after getting that last stone, Zephyr finds himself face to face with..... duh duh duh! Valen. The hero who was supposed to be saving the world was actually Glatose the whole time, and the reason he "died" was because he was actually using a decoy to pretend fight a war with him. While everyone started a war with his minions, he was free to build up power enough to clear out all human life. So, yeah, I may have wanted to add those points in.

            Re: How's work for you?

My game is pretty much complete. I could at any time submit it. It uses two memory card slots. One is at 92% and the other is at 88.9% Right now I've been working on spelling. My progress has slowed a lot in the last week since I got RPGM 2 and working on the contest game.

              Re: How's work for you?

Ah. Hey, Lausen, how does that work, the utilizing two files? My game is half done, and I am planning on every piece of the 100% given to my file usage be used. I like letting the player travel back to places, so I'm not making it two files. I know a little about how it works, but not fully.

                Re: How's work for you?

You can travel back to places in mine too. In my game the change between the slots is done in a dungeon. I put a sign there explaining it step by step. What you do is save at that save spot. Then you load up the second slot. Then go to data managment in the main menu and save, but save over slot one. When you load up that file now it will have all the events in slot two. When you load up to playtest the files aren't erased. As long as it's in the same place the game won't freeze on you.

Sorry if it not very clear. I'm kinda in a rush.

It's alright. So, my friend today suggested I put a demo of my game, as I'm far enough into making it now, so people will give me suggestions for improving.

But red is hard to see on the blue emerald style.
