Welcome to the world of Fantasia Saga. This game is an inspired spin-off of SaGa Frontier on RPG Maker 1. What is it that is so inspirational about SaGa Frontier? First of all it has a unique battle system and gameplay style. Many of the aspects that are unique about SaGa Frontier's system cannot be recreated in RPG Maker 1, but I intent to the best of my ability to capture the essence of SaGa Frontier and reinvent it in a way that is suitable to RPG Maker. This is not a remake of SaGa Frontier. It is an original title in the style of SaGa Frontier.
Here are some of the game's features:
-A non-linear gameplay style featuring 5 different main characters and 5 different stories. Here is a rundown of the main characters and their stories:
Art: Art is a treasure hunter who, along with his companion Steve stumbles upon a treasure that will lead him to some radical problems. By unlocking the treasure in Mine Cave he inadvertently unleashes a demon that was locked away in the cave's treasure room. This leads Art on a wild goose chase to find and defeat the demon. Little does Art realize, he is in for a few big surprises.
Lily: Lily Wong is the daughter of world renowned martial arts master Chen Wong. One day after returning from an errand for her father she finds that her father is missing and is approached by a hoodlum who claims that his gang, "The Hood" has killed her father and intends on killing her as well. After surviving, Lily intends on getting to the bottom of this puzzle by challenging "The Hood" itself, the world's largest criminal empire.
R-JK2: R-JK2 is a robot who awakens in a junkyard, restored to life by the junkyard's (only) resident goblin scientist. R-JK2 knows nothing of his purpose as he possesses what he believes is an incomplete program. He believes that he was discarded as a failed experiment, but he intends on finding out why. R-JK2's quest is to confront his origin and find a purpose.
Ozborne: Ozborne is a powerful mage from Magic Village, and co-heir to the throne along with his brother Mordock. However, as custom dictates, Ozborn must gain every magic gift and have a death match with his brother Mordock to see who will become the next king.
Valerie: Valerie is an angel from a distant galaxy that is assigned as guardian of Earth. There she must live up to the expectations of her superiors to create a system of balance and order.
Difficulty: Each character has a different difficulty level (some characters have easier scenarios than others):
-Art-normal
-Lily-normal
-R-JK2-normal
-Ozborne-hard
-Valerie-easy
-Gameplay features:
-Three character types or races; Humans, Robots, and Monsters. Each type has a different way of becoming stronger. Humans gain experience by leveling (see below for more details on human characters) and gain skills and magic through a skill and magic shop system. Robots must buy upgrades to become stronger (also see below for more on robots). Monsters absorb enemy monsters and change their form to become more powerful (details below).
More on Humans:
Humans get their stat. increases by traditional RPG leveling. However, their skill and magic acquisition is a little different.
-Skills: Skills (as in abilities) are not acquired through a skill class. Instead they are learned by collecting Skill Orbs that are randomly dropped from monsters. There are 3 kinds of skill orbs; Skill Orb A, B, and C. Skill Orb A type are dropped by weak low tier monsters. On the flip side Skill Orb C type are dropped by strong high tier monsters. Skill Orb B are dropped by mid tier monsters. Some skills require a combination of Skill Orb types to learn.
Skills are broken up into weapon types. Different characters specialize in different weapons as is indicated by the skill types that they can learn. The types are: Sword, Gun, Fist, Bow, and Mind.
Main characters will also learn skills by defeating bosses in their story.
-Magic: Like skills, magic is learned by trading in Magic Orbs for spells. However, initially only the most basic spells can be "bought". To learn higher level magic you must complete a quest to gain the gift of that particular type of magic. After the gift for each magic type has been gained, you will be able to purchase any kind of magic for almost all human characters (there are a couple that just can't use magic). The most powerful spells can only be learned by humans with the "Magic User" skill class.
Like skills also, magic is broken up into types, however any human that can use magic can use any kind of magic with an exception. There's Fire, Ice, Lightning, Cure, Status, Destruction, and Mirage magic. Mirage magic is the exception. It can only be used by Ozborne and Mordock. Some characters have an innate gift for a particular type of magic, meaning that they will gain spells from leveling up. Mirage magic is innate to Ozborne and Mordock, and there is no other way to gain it (well, at least not by humans).
-There are 3 Skill Class types for humans, each with a different innate battle ability (plus Angel which functions like a human). These are fixed for specific characters and do not change:
-Fighter-Counter Attack
-Treasure Hunter-Treasure Find Up
-Magic User-x2 Magic Damage
-Angel-First Attack
-Here's a list of all the playable/recruitable human characters in Fantasia Saga and their skill classes and specialties as well as innate magic gifts:
-Art-Treasure Hunter, Bow, Mind
-Steve-Treasure Hunter, Sword, Gun, Mind
-Wrestler-Fighter, Fist
-Mordock-Magic User, Mind, Mirage
-Ozborne-Magic User, Mind, Mirage
-Lily-Fighter, Fist, Mind, Cure
-Sybil-Magic User, Gun, Mind, Cure
-Valerie-Angel, Sword, Cure
-Melee-Fighter, Sword
-Dark-Fighter, Sword, Mind, Status
All humans can equip most types of equipment, but there are limitations for some characters. Fist users cannot equip weapons at all. Instead they have a cursed weapon called “Fist”. Some characters like Art who is the only archer in the game, have a cursed shield called “Used Hand” while others are free to equip either shields or multiple weapons.
-More on Robots:
There are 2 playable robot characters in Fantasia Saga. R-JK2 and Steam Bot. R-JK2 is the superior model by a long shot but they both have things in common that can give them an edge over humans. Robots are immune to status effects. They must buy and install upgrades in order to get stronger. The downside is that they can be expensive and there is a limit to how strong they can get (humans and monsters have a limit too but not relatively speaking), but they are easily capable of being your strongest party members.
There are 3 types of upgrades for robots; Programs, Body Types, and Equipables. Programs will give a one time only permanent upgrade such as a stat. boost or a new skill/magic. Body Types can be purchased and installed to change the robot’s overall stats. Equipables is pretty self explanatory; it's equipment for robots.
Robots can equip some human weapons but no human armor. R-JK2 can equip swords or guns and can use both hands while Steam Bot can only use one hand and can only equip guns. Most of the equipment robots use is special robot only equipment.
Robots can also download programs from defeated robot enemies.
The robot skill class is “Robot” and its innate ability is Critical Hit Up.
-More on Monsters:
Monsters are broken up by their skill classes or types. There are 10 different types of monsters in Fantasia Saga. Each has a different innate ability. Here’s the list of monster types and abilities:
Slime-None
Insect-None
Aquatic-Treasure Find Up
Beast-Critical Hit Up
Bird-First Attack
Bloodsucker-LP (HP) Drain
Undead-Battle Heal
Demon-Counter Attack
Spirit-x2 Magic Damage
Dragon-+1 Attack
Monster characters grow by absorbing defeated enemy monsters. When an enemy monster is absorbed your monster character will change shape and will become whatever skill class best represents the monster that you absorb. Along with the form change your monster will inherit the stats. of the absorbed monster (with a modified HP and MP for your character monster). When you absorb a monster there will be a chance to learn a monster skill. The strongest monster forms require certain skills to absorb. If you absorb a strong monster without the required skill, you will morph into a weaker monster.
There are 3 playable monster characters; Slime, Zenobob (Beast type), and Galamoth (Dragon type). Galamoth is something of a “secret” character. He’s available from the beginning of the game but you have to defeat him to get him, and he’s one of the hardest bosses in the game.
Monsters can only equip accessories.
-Locations: One of the things that is very distinctive about SaGa Frontier is the non-linearity. You can go just about anywhere at any time, and there a ton of sidequests available to you right from the onset. This is also a major feature in Fantasia Saga. The travel method is similar to SaGa Frontier in that there are multiple Worlds (regions) that are accessible by a Station that is a kind of hub. Here is a list of the main locations in Fantasia Saga:
-New Work: The Koorong of Fantasia Saga that connects to almost anywhere.
-West World: The largest world in Fantasia Saga.
-East World: The “Asian” type world.
-Trash: The Scrap of Fantasia Saga.
-Mine World
-Magic Village
-Monster Island
-Swampland
-Secret Island
-Paranormal World
-My Base: The party change room
When you travel from one location to another you will be taken to a short Sky Boat interlude (too bad you can't really make it look like it's moving) showing your party traveling. Each destination will have a different custom music short.
-Artifacts: There are 3 rare artifact sidequests. The Vitality Rune, Book of Vigor, and Eternal Lamp. They are infinite healing items and heal LP (HP), Cure Status, and Revive respectively.
That’s all for now. I will be updating regularly.
