I plan on buying a PS3 this weekend...

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about it. More likely I just forgot things, but before I take the leap I would like to know some of the details. Which model is the best one to get? The different features? How does the memory work (card, stick, internal, etc.)? What possible problems to look out for? What games should I look into?

    Thanks in advance.

Which model is the best one to get?
If you care about backward compatiblity see if you can get a 60GB. They were discontinued a while ago but GameStop sells them refurbished and used if they got em. Second choice is 80gb, it's at least got software BC. But if you don't care for BC at all go for the cheap 40gb, you can swap out the hard drive if need be.

        The different features?
I assume you mean between the models. Aside from drive sizes and BC they're mostly the same. 40gb has 2 usb ports instead of 4 and doesn't have the card readers (mem stick, sd, compact flash).

How does the memory work (card, stick, internal, etc.)?
60 and 80 can read music, video, photos from memory stick, sd, compact flash. All can read USB devices. Game saves are on the internal hard drive, you need an accessory to trade saves from a PS2/1 mem card to the drive.

What possible problems to look out for?
Few, if any, problems being reported. You'll want to keep it clean. It's a dust magnet.

What games should I look into?
I'm sure other people will fill this one in. Duel named most of what I would say.

Which model is the best one to get?

-The 40gb model is Sony's "vanilla" model. You cannot play PS2 games on the 40gb ps3... without some sort of hacking involved. I'm not big on the PS3 mod scene but there's probably a work around SOMEWHERE. In all honesty, unless you ditched your ps2, there's little reason to get an 80gb unless you have plans on downloading everything under the sun.

Note: there is a 20gb and 60gb model but I they don't even make those anymore.

Note2: Every model is backwards compatible with psone games... go figure. ONLY the 60gb and 80gb are backwards comp with ps2 games but the 60gb is long gone and the 80gb just went out of production.

          The different features?

-Different features of what? The two models? The 40gb doesn't support super audio cd, ps2 games, and there's no flash card reader.

How does the memory work (card, stick, internal, etc.)?

-All files are saved to the harddrive and can be transfered either to a flash drive or to your PSP.

What possible problems to look out for?

-The PSP is actually pretty stable because Sony manufactures the things themself. It's a delicate system (moreso than the others) and it's glossy as hell so I'd say dust and wipe the thing whenever you get the chance. It seems to accumulate dust REALLY easy.

What games should I look into?

-Exclusives? People are talking about HAZE which is an fps from free radical. I enjoyed Folklore and Uncharted even though the latter was pretty short. Heavenly Sword is decent if you enjoyed God of War and Warhawk is a pretty fun multiplayer game. Ratchet and Clank is also good and exactly what one would expect from the series. The game to really look out for is LittleBigPlanet which lets you piece together your own platform levels complete with advanced physics and stuff. Of course, there's always MGS4 and the two Final Fantasy 13 games to look out for in the future.

Not a lot of exclusives on the PS3 yet... and whenever people talk about PS3 games it's always "well, so and so is around the corner." I don't think PS3's online component is at Microsoft's YET but Sony's is free and there's a lot of good things coming out soon (like PS3 Home) so it may take over.

If you have any interest in a Magic:The Gathering-style game, get Eye of Judgment (regardless of Valk's qualm about being able to counterfeit cards)...it's only $10 more than a regular full priced ($60) PS3 game, and comes with a card starter pack, a booster pack, the game mat, the Playstation Eye camera, and a stand for the Eye.

Other than that, I've not purchased any other retail games. I'm waiting for the free download to install Home (whenever they decide to release that) and LittleBigPlanet, which should be amazing. If you are going online with your PS3, download the Home and the LBP demo videos.

Most of my PS3 play time consists of downloadable games. If you are going online with the PS3, you NEED to get Everyday Shooter. That's the only given for downloadable games. I also recommend Pixel Junk Monsters if you like tower defense/RTS games, flOw for a unique use of the Sixaxis controller, Loco Roco Cocoreccho if you did not buy the PSP version, and if you decide to get the Playstation Eye camera, I would also recommend getting one or more of the "interactive art" downloads (they are only $2 each)....with the top nod going to the Japanese watercolor one in which you control a flock of birds and traverse across a large "painting" spanning many screens.

I'm not much help on the PS3 exclusives at retail, nor the multiplatform stuff (I'll probably continue to buy that stuff on the 360 until they institute the trophies or award system for games).

Eye of Judgment's too expensive for my taste. The starter set's only $10 more than a regular game but it's the additional cars. $4 for boosters, $15 for decks and then when new sets come out you have to pay for a downloadable update in order to use the new cards you already bought? I think not.

And you see why people just use fake cards instead of the real ones.

Thanks a whole bunch, guys. I think I'll look for a used 60 GB, maybe I'll get lucky. If I can't find it I'm stuck with a 40 GB which would leave me with some extra cash for some games. I planned on just getting DMC4, for now. However, I may look into Eye of Judgement (I have missed playing card games) and a few others. LittleBigPlanet sounds like it may be fun. Keep the game suggestions coming and I would prefer games that are already out. I can't buy games that aren't being sold.

                    HOLD IT!!

Metal Gear Solid 4 now has a release date, June 12. But more to the point, Sony will release a new bundle along with it. 80GB PS3 with MGS4 and a DualShock 3 controller still at $499.

The DualShock 3 itself will be released on April 15 for $54.99.

If you can, find yourself a 60G model because it'll be fully backword compatiable. That way you can sell your PS2 and all it's accessories--making your PS3 purchase all the cheaper. You'll need the memory card adaptor to transer your save files over though. But once you use it you can return it like I did.

If you can find one at BestBuy, I think they're also giving away free Blu-Ray movies. So do that, and if you want you could return those movies somewhere else for store credit that you can use towards MGS4. And while you're at it, why not open up a Reward Zone account. After spending that much money you're bound to get some nice coupons. I don't know how it all works but you should get at least $40 in store credit. (I think it's like $5 every $100 spent. I bet Dreamy knows.).

Also: sell your Sixaxis towards the purchase of the DualShock 3 (eBay is your best shot). I know this sounds like a lot of work but it's the only way to get the best of both worlds.

I'd be all over this MGS bundle if there weren't so many 360 games not on PS3 that I really want. And I'm completely not rich enough or inclined to own both.

even the 60GB PS3 isnt fully backwards compatabile. for example, no PS3 model will boot the max drive software.

Not like you really need to use it with the PS3.

if you want to download RPGM games that havent been converted to the PS3 format, you do.
