    The Golden Compass

What are your views about The Golden Compass? There has been a lot of controversy about it and I personally believe it's bad... I am a Christian and I think it's attacking our religion. It talks about killing "Lord Isreal" and the good "Deamons". Many people say it's good on Gamefaqs.com but what a lot of people don't get is: If I made a game about killing Mohammed I would get in big trouble... Many people say that "It isn't about killing god!" but even Pullman himself said: "My game is about killing god." Anyways I was just wondering your opinion about the book... Try not too bash me ...

    Look at that! *Runs*

I think you have to respect the viewpoints of others. I don't know what punishment you'd get for making a game about killing Mohammed, if any, but it doesn't justify punishment for anti-religious books. After all, this is a country that is a safe haven for freedom of speech.

If the book/movie/game offends you, then simply do not watch the movies or read the books.

Yes I see your point but I don't believe they should be feeding our kids these things! The movie is actually less bad than the book! They make a movie and describe it as "The other side of The Loin The Witch And The Wardrobe" and then show it to our kids so that they'll buy these books about how evil god is! And by the way: If I maid a book about killing Mohammad or Buddha I might not get jail sentence but they probably wouldn't put it on the store shelves and I probably wouldn't be able to ever show my face in public for the rest of my life! That is just my oppinion... I belive the book is bad so no bashing please ...

*yawn* is there a difference between this movie and Narnia?

        Doesn't look like there is.

I think you underestimate the effect a fictional story will have on a child. The parent (most often) is by and far the most influential figure in the creation of a childs beliefs. I don't know how a well a kid will be able to dissect the anti-religious meanings hidden in the text.

Anyways, all kids eventually hit a point where they are able to examine the facts, evidence, and texts and construct their own personal viewpoint.

I'd rather have my child exposed a wide variety of viewpoints, anti-religious and religious alike.

I thought The Golden Compass and it's two sequels were pretty good, though the ending of the third one really dragged on and got boring. Other than that though, they seemed pretty solid and well written.

My hopes are not too high for the Golden Compass movie though, but I'll probably see it anyway.

Narnia is an OBVIOUS reference to fighting WITH god (If you ever read the books and if you are familiar with Christian theology you could see that) And The Golden Compass is an OBVIOUS reference to KILLING god... So yes there is a difference...

Uh, no you're wrong. The Golden Compass is not about killing God, it actually deals with organized religion (the Church).

Narina is a pro-Christian series of books.

I don't mind people having their own religious beliefs, but as soon as people start running around screaming how something is so bad and offends them then they need to shut the **** up and keep it to their selves. People are offended by stuff all the time, what makes you think that just because it is about your religion we should make an exception for it? I would be more scared that my child is seeing the everyday crap on television than watching/reading a movie or book. Seriously, if it offends you that bad then just don't watch it. What are you really accomplishing my coming onto a forum and ranting about how horrible it is for our children?

thats the heart of the mater right there. irregardless of how much you shelter a child they will grow up and question what doesnt make sense to them. perhaps they will stick to their upbringing of religion, perhaps they will choose another option that seams to work better for them - bottom line is they will do what they feel is best as freedom allows.

as a youth i didnt quite pick up all the sexual innuendos in toy story. its only when i was baby sitting as an adult that i grasped just how much was there. i have my doubt that kids are going to be able to grasp the religious undertones anywhere near the level the adults world. to kids it would be a fun and fantasy filled movie, for the adults it just might kept them interested with the whole deeper meaning that only they would get.

also dont forget that controversy makes great free publicity so as the owner of the story he would love to toss that in there to generate more income and notoriety for his book and possibly drum up some more profit from the royalties from the film.
