"The Wii User Isn't a HARDCORE User"

    http://gamernode.com/News/4731-Yamao...ser/index.html

I better put my battle armor on because it's time for our weekly segment titled "Time to go ape over one quote from a major game developer employee!" This week's segment involves Akira Yamaoka, chief composer for Konami, taking a brief jab at the Nintendo Wii when talking about Silent Hill V on Game | Life.

The outrage stemmed from this quote, "No plans. The Wii user isn't a hardcore user." Trust me, if there's one battle you don't want to wade through, it's calling the entire Wii crowd a bunch of casual gamers. There are the hardcore gamers who own Wiis. Also there are "hardcore" games available for the Wii but I think these types of titles will be only sprinkled onto the gaming market every so often.

Nonetheless, what do you folks think? For you ones with a Wii, do you think it stinks to be labeled as a casual gamer? Also here's a good clip of Yamaoka talking about if Silent Hill V will head elsewhere, which sparked his comment about the Wii:

WN: What is the future of the Silent Hill series?

AY: We're making Silent Hill 5 for next-gen consoles. Are there any other platforms besides that? [laughter]

    WN: There's the Wii.

AY: Ah, the Wii. Wiiiiiiiiii... Silent Hill Wii. Can we do it? Will players like it?

WN: Yeah! There's a lot of potential there, using the remote as a flashlight, or a knife...

    AY: Yeah, there's potential.

    WN: But no plans.

AY: No plans. The Wii user isn't a hardcore user.
I think sales prove otherwise, don't you think?

I think sales kind of indicate the opposite. Tons of people I know who really aren't into games have jumped on the Wii bandwagon. Ipods sell a **** ton, but a lot of the people who buy them really aren't that into music. I think it's the same thing here. But to be honest, most hardcore gamers probably own all three systems so it's really not that big of a deal.

I'd play a silent hill game on the Wii.

I love Akira Yamaoka (even after SH4), but he needs to get a clue.

I agree, my uncle who was in prison for almost a decade has a freakin Wii.

Besides an original Fatal Frame is coming to Wii, that may prove to developers otherwise.

I don't really blame developers for having that mindset about Wii, Nintendo kind of did that to themselves.

That's somewhat narrow-minded thinking. He's not really giving Wii much credit beyond it being a "system for the casual gamer". If done right, the Wii can attract hardcore gamers as well.

I mean, hello? Super Smash Brothers Brawl? Resident Evil Umbrella? Metroid Prime Corruption?

his comment is quite ignorant but he maybe right. i dont think his game would do good on the wii which is what he was trying to point out. there will always be exceptions to the rule, and as pointed out by others most hardcores have multiple systems, so he is right in his assessment.

Be careful, the clerks are trained assassins. Watch out for their ninjitsu-style death kicks.

I don't think it's an ignorant comment, 3rd party sales for the wii are dismal, aren't they?

I don't think a Silent Hill Wii would sell very good.

Though to be honest I don't quite know how well SH5 will do, either.

he is correct but his statement is still ignorant because it brandishes all wii users as non hardcore which is completely incorrect. he could of stated that the sales wouldnt be good by using a different approach that didnt involve an untrue general statement.

Regardless, after SH4, I'm not sure the new games will sell to well.

Re: "The Wii User Isn't a Harcore User"

Has Nintendo even said (or at least hinted) that the hardcore games is specifically not their target audience with the Wii. I think those who think the Wii is a 'hardcore' gaming system are a bit disillusioned. It's meant to be the mainstream party system. Doesn't mean it can't have hardcore games on it, but that's not it's primary purpose. Nintendo wants to sell big and they knew to do that they needed to get the mainstream crowd, which they have done pretty successfully. But 360 and PS3 are certainly more for the hardcore gaming crowd, as they offer more of those types of games, since they're basically PC/Console hybrids in terms of power and to some extent design (hell the PS3 can be a PC).

So calling most Wii users non hardcore I think is a very accurate statement, and I think Nintendo would agree since that's not really their market. Using that as a reason to not put your game on the system is a bit dubious, but games have and will continue been successful without having a Wii port. I know I personally find the Wii controls to be more of a nuisance than more intuitive. Certainly different, but I don't think better, especially since the games I've played don't offer camera control, since you only have one analog stick with the Wii, and I would rather have camera control than be able to shake/swing the controller.
