Talk about LOWER END.(Sony announces new, cheaper PS3)

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071018/...ny_playstation

Anyway, it's cheaper, has a smaller HDD, and IT DOESN'T PLAY PS2 GAMES? The excuse? "There's a more extensive lineup of games of the PlayStation 3."
I think this is dumb. Why phase out the 60GB model?

well, $400 is a lot better than $600. and probably 90% of PS3 owners also have a PS2.
if I were to buy a PS3, it'd be this one.

I think both established models should've gotten a price cut, instead of Sony basically saying "You want it cheaper? Well, there's a catch..."

Id pay $200 more for a PS3 if it played PS2 games, why? Because I dont want the hassle of switching video modes everytime I want to play something, I could always get a few splitters and run both systems off the same input jacks, but then Id still have 2 systems cluttering up my entertainment center.

If you ask me, having extra space to put something for 5 years and not worrying about the hassle of changing systems when I want to play a PS2/PS3 game is still well worth the $200

They also dropped the 80gb to $500. They didn't change the price of the 60 since they're not actually producing or shipping those anymore. Any stores that still have them will probably adjust the price though.

With my PS2 in need of replacement I'd much prefer a backward compatible PS3 if I was going to get one at all.

The 80GB is still backwards compatible, it's just the 40GB that loses that functionality, but as Valk has pointed out on several occasions, the 60GB model has the emotion engine, while the 80GB just emulates. I imagine losing the emotion engine made it cheaper to produce, and losing the emulator (in the 40GB) made it cheaper still.

I picked up the 60GB for $500 and haven't regretted it. Backwards compatibility is pretty important to me while an extra 20GB of hard drive space isn't.

thats how i see it too. chances are most of those who own a ps2 have had it for a while, some since it came out. those systems are going to crap out eventually so why not just pay the hundred bucks now and have it all on one system? also it makes more sense to use one unit rather then 2 different ones cluttering up your tv tray.

i have around 50gigs on my computer and its not even remotely full so why would anyone need anything over 40 gigs for a console? what the hell does the console download that would require outrageous amounts of space? its so much space could duel tap that 80 gig hd to my computer and run both off of it.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

so glad I got my PS3 when I did. One of the major things I like about the system is never having to bother with memory cards for PS1/PS2 games again, and having ALL the RPG Maker games ever made on there.

I've used up 20GB just in demos on my PS3.

I didn't think demos took up that much space.

As for the subject of this cheaper PS3, I wouldn't get it. The one my brother got (at launch) is a million times better. JPS and Karr are absolutely right.

really? it puts your saves right onto the ps3? how do you transfer over old saves, get saves off the ps3, and be able to share the files like you do here?

you can buy a memory card adapter for fifteen dollars that will let you move saves back and forth between the PS3 and PS1/PS2 memory cards. you can get saves off the PS3 with different kinds of flash memory cards (SD, memory stick compact flash) or USB storage devices.

I have a lot of demos. And quite a few of them are well over 1 GB a piece.
