You know like Pokemon and its many clones. I'm just curious, I got an idea on how to make a game using the basic premise (capture monsters, fight with them), and I was just wondering if anyone else had ever done it. I'm not really interested in borrowing ideas from any games that have done this.

Anyone ever do a "monster capturing" game for RPGM1?

Re: Anyone ever do a "monster capturing" game for RPGM1?
There's been many similar games proposed over the years, but the limitations of RPGM1 would severely limit the amount and types of monsters you could have. There are ways around this, of course, but none of them are very appetizing. The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson

Is this concept possible with RPG Maker 3? *Curious* I haven't tried anything like that, yet..

So I take it that no one has ever finished a game like this because of the limits of RPGM1?Originally posted by The Toecutter View PostThere's been many similar games proposed over the years, but the limitations of RPGM1 would severely limit the amount and types of monsters you could have. Yeah, I noticed the limitations.
I'm kind of banging together a short concept demo to get a feel for my ideas and how well they would work. Right now I'm looking at a potential full game with a max of 12 different monsters. It doesn't seem like much, but I'm using the monsters as full blown characters, and giving them different roles. I've gotten 4 basic monsters down in the demo I'm working on, and wrestling with that code is stretching my brain to the limit.
Basic ideas:
-You capture the souls of monsters you defeat. Once you've captured a monster soul, you can use the monster in your party.
-Monster souls are used to give experience to the monster and can be traded in a trade shop for healing items, and possibly weapons for the monster (I haven't decided if I want to give them equipment).
-Although there is only one basic monster type used as a character, there's up to four monsters encountered that can be used to level the monster (ok maybe, I haven't developed that much yet), and teach it new abilities. For example, the most basic monster is the goblin. A goblin soul can be used to teach your goblin low powered abilities or give it a small amount of experience. A hobgoblin soul would be worth more experience and can unlock even better abilities (or at least that's my idea, I'm just using basic stuff in the demo I'm making.
-Three "characters" in the party are monsters, and the player can freely swap out monsters back at the home base. The fourth character is the one doing the monster capturing.
-There are enemy hunters that you encounter while trying to capture monster souls. You need to defeat them so you can capture more monsters. If they defeat you, however, they capture your soul and you're forced to serve them. Needless to say, when that happens, it's "Game Over".
-There will be an arena of sorts where you can fight other NPC hunters and their monsters for prizes. Unfortunately, I can't think of a way to do 2-player matches (admittedly one of the attractions of this game subgenre), but that shouldn't be a big deal.
Anyway, it will be a while before I actually work on this game in earnest, since there's a fairly big game I've been working on a bit at a time for a while that I really want to make. I'm just doing a small demo so I can figure out the basics of what I need to do.

Aside from some undead-looking colorations for some of the human models, you'd only have 9 non-human models to go with, and a few of them aren't even monster-looking.Originally posted by armyfoxtrot77 View PostIs this concept possible with RPG Maker 3? *Curious* I haven't tried anything like that, yet..

Well, I have to say I'm nearly done with the demo. Just have to balance out a monster, think up a boss fight, and set up the third arena fight. Also I'm going to have a sort of tutorial function (a bunch of bookshelves with message events explaining the game basics).

I really like the idea you have for this, if it is done right it could be an excellent game
I have a question as well
When fighting does the "human" character have any other special features that distinguishes him from the monsters... or are they more or less "on his level" while fighting and act like partners?"Dans le veritable amour c'est l'ame, qui enveloppe le corps"

remote control had a very small monster capture part if i remember right. it wasnt anything super insane but it was still good. you could have the monsters as a magic instead of a playable character. perhaps have several moves as magic for the one char.
you can be creative and pull this off. you have a max character number but you dont even need your ash char in the party. maybe have 15 types of monster types and use those as the base for your part.
the skies the limit, just give it more thought.

Ive done it, actually in the middle of a side project now similar to Azure Dreams, when the human leaves the tower he goes back to level 1 while the monsters keep their levelLast edited by JPS; 10-18-2007, 01:48 PM.

Pretty good, I have all 20 stories of the tower done and in the middle of creating the 80 monsters with all skills that resides in the tower, its going to have a lot of items also, 150-200, most of which are rarely found when killing monsters and allow special abilities.
Its going to be more of an adventure game then a story with a stressed storylineLast edited by JPS; 10-18-2007, 03:02 PM.

Im going to have stuff similar to that, maybe not "rebuilding" because so much memory would be involved with that, but definately improvements, in addition to having a world to explore when you want a break from the tower to do various side missions, something Azure Dreams should have had

I don't settle for anything less than excellence in my creations....Originally posted by lil_das View PostI really like the idea you have for this, if it is done right it could be an excellent game
The human is the first party member, and is always a permanent member. His weapons are nets that attack all monsters at once. He doesn't earn experience, but monsters drop food items that can be used to boost his stats (you can boost your monster stats as well, but since they can level, it's best to save the food for the main.)When fighting does the "human" character have any other special features that distinguishes him from the monsters... or are they more or less "on his level" while fighting and act like partners?
