    ~Wicker Stories~

    Story of Saint Christopher
As Recorded by Monk Tomas in the Fifty-Sixth Year of the Third Age of the Guardian. (1556 T.A.)

Saint Christopher was a prominent figure in the three-hundredth and fifth year in the First Age of the Guardian (318 F.A.). He is most known for his pilgrimages from Direfort, in Sunas, to the uncharted peninsula of Wicker, where the ancient Guard Temple stood on the spot where the Guardian first made her ascension to Roshan. During these travels, Christopher had chosen an elfin bride from Marladuke, a young woman by the name of Chinatsu, who gladly accompanied him on all his travels to pay homage to the Guardian. In Christopher’s final pilgrimage, his caravan had been beset upon what is now known as the “Great Chasm.” Very little of this is recorded, but early observations describe it as “a great evil that ate away at the land, causing the very soil of Roshan to devour itself, and leave only an immense empty void in it’s wake.” This very observation is still used by storytellers today. To escape the destruction of the Great Chasm, Christopher lead his followers into a cave near the cape of Wicker, and prayed to the Guardian to protect them. After hours of tormenting shakes and tremors that ripped through the cave, Christopher chose to brave the outside and face the monster himself. He left, not to be seen again by his wife, nor his followers. Days soon passed, and the tremors subsided, and the bravest of the pilgrims, Chinatsu, stepped to the mouth of the cave to be greeted only by the body of a huge lion, with Christopher’s marriage pendent around its paw. The body had been set upon by some unknown weapon, and Chinatsu mourned over its body, convinced that the Guardian had blessed her husband with this form to protect them from the Great Chasm. The land around them in near ruins from the battle, only the cave and its inhabitants had escaped destruction. The pilgrims soon burned the lion’s body and built a community upon its ashes, a mile west of the Guard Temple. The town of Christopher was soon built up as one of the most traveled-to cities for temple worship to this day.
