Let me preface this by saying I love platformers. From the early age of 8, when I first got my Nintendo and a copy of MegaMan 2 to today, when I picked up a copy of Rayman DS I've always been drawn to games where you must run, jump, and collect things. Heck, I even play Donkey Kong 64 on occasion.
So here comes Psychonauts, which I feel will make you happy even if the thought of leaping from one mysteriously suspended platform to another makes you want to puke. It's the latest game from Tim Schafer (Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango) and the first game from his own studio Double Fine Productions.
The game takes place in the near future where wars are fought in the mind by trained psychics called Psychonauts. You play as a young psychic named Raz (short for Rasputin) who is at a government Psychonaut training facility. The levels of the game take place in the minds of various designs of the came and reflect their own psychological problems.
The game looks awesome with creative levels that get rid of old platforming cliches (fire level, ice world, etc) and instead presents something totally unique. One level called Black Velvita is a Mexican city complete with raging bulls, and masked wrestlers, but the entire level is painted on black velvet, with details presented in neon colors. Or the mind of a war monger is based on old hex based strategy games. Or the level of a paranoid milkman who's mind is a 50's suburban neighborhood filled with shadowy figures who peer out at you from curtained windows.
The style of the game is absolutely fantastic. The characters somewhat resemble the style from Okage, but much better looking. It looks something like I would imagine JumpKid would look, if it wasn't confined to RPGM1. Just look at these screens.
Silver Monkey Hole!
Learnin' 'bout bovines.
Milkman's Paranoia. Look at the size of that pipe. That's a lot of sewage.
Black Velvita
Waterloo
Tim has said that this game seeks to pull platformers out of the kiddypool that they've languished in for years. It incorporates humor based for adults and the psychological problems are real traumas. It's not intended for the Mario crowd.
I'm psyched to say the least. Microsoft dropped this game and it had to be picked up by another published just like Oddworld: Stranger. It's amazing that they would drop these games. Just like Oddworld this is something you should play. It comes out April 17th for the Xbox. A PS2 port is in the works.
Seriously, this game looks amazing. It looks like it's going to be a sleeper, so I'm doing my part to get people to play it. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
