    Spies among us

Does anyone here know of of good free spyware programs to get rid of spyware? I got a trogan horse last night and my current subcriptions to Norton and Webroot have expired, meaning that they haven't been able to detect the threat.

    Help?

Fun fact: Recent tests have shown that Norton is one of the worst anti-virus programs out there.

          Norton and McAfee are HORRIBLE.

Thanks guys. I updated my Webroot Spysweeper and deleted Norton (I always thought it was crap) and am downloading everything that thetruecoolness recommended.

            I should be good now.

Beyond being giant system hogs, Norton and McAfee also have to deal with being the market leaders. What does that mean? It means that virus writers actually TEST THEIR NEW VIRUSES against Norton and McAfee to ensure that a.)they can't detect their virus and b.)they can't kill their virus.

Yeah, McAffe's been pretty good to me, it detects some stuff spybot and other cleaners can't. Having an arsenal of computer cleaners is the best route to go though, get spybot and some other program.

Kind of sucks that computer security is never 100%.

I use CA antivirus and antispyware. I don't think it's very good though because I seem to have some weirdness going on that it's not detecting or fixing although it does occassionally pick up something. I also have their firewall in the package. On the default settings it blocks all animations and a lot of pictures which really ticked me off so I had to lower the security. And it's currently saying it's blocked over 86,000 intrusions but only 93 were potentially dangerous. So that seems kind of pointless. But I certainly don't want to trust the stupid built in Windows XP firewall.

Same here. No warning, no heads up, just click, bye bye. It sucks that I had to deal with it for a few months before noticing the problem.

I downloaded zonealarm as my firewall ever since then.

And yes, being that it is a big boy amongst the firewalls, its pretty obvious that most script writers target to go around it.
