    Coup in Thailand.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5361512.stm

Weird, I hadn't even heard anything on any news networks about any kind of unrest or anything that would lead me to believe a government was about to be overthrown.

Someone who lives in thailand I know from another site posted this:

"Bangkok: at 8:00pm thai time this evening i heard that a coup was maybe on the books for tonight.

well, it happened and now the capitol and all important communication centres are under the jurisdiction of the armed forces.
it's as quiet as a mouse though...a true bloodless coup (TBA)
crossed the city at 2:00 am and was stopped by army once and they smilingly let us trough."

    Suprising.

"At first it just looked like a picture of a bunch of lily pads, but then I started scraping at it with my pocket knife and the whole painting just sort of spoke to me," Schmidt said. "For the first time, I finally understand what Monet was trying to get across in her work."

I had Thailand students come to work last year at the theme park I work at in their summer program. It was interesting to hear them talk about how violent their country was, especially when they couldn't speak good English.
              ...and that's why.

Interesting. I don't know to describe the relationship any better, but my step-siblings real mother lives in Thailand.

Given how screwed up of a world we live in, there is even the slight possibility of a coup in the U.S. in a couple years.

I doubt it. It'll be a long while before most americans can even fathom the trouble they're currently in. Then it'll take about a decade for them to do something about it. THEN God will take away everyone's ability to understand English, which will mean 20 MORE new languages.

I have to agree with Mora. You hear a lot of grumbling, but honestly it's only the extreme fringes that are extreme in their beliefs.

It also helps that we don't have a history of violent struggle over election results. If you read the articles coups were common in Thailand until the mid-90's. In fact, I guess the recent 10-15 years is an aberration in that the military didn't interfere with politics (until now).

Barring only the Civil War, every handover of power from one party to another in the US has not been accompanied by mass violence in any form. Even the disputed 2000 election.

Why a coup when you can throw the bums out in 4 years?

Americans are too lazy or too busy looking the other way to do a coup. Plus our military is stretched all over the middle east and too busy to go against the US.

oh, i think there will be a coup here in the US, perhaps even within the next 2 years...mostly because Bush will attempt to stay in power and have to be forcibly removed. I would not be surprised if the US becomes split into separate countries within the next 25 years at the rate certain factions are attempting to gain power.
