    UFO: Alien Invasion (a project - image-heavy)

EDIT: Images got moved around, resulting in broken links but I figured no one would care since no one seems to so far.

So, I was thinking about some of the good 'ol threads I've seen here over the years, and I suddenly remembered this little thread. Some other old-timers (comparatively) might remember this. The premise was this - Garr123 would hire various members of the Pavilion to serve as soldiers in this video game, called X-COM. There, he would use them to fight aliens and save the world as we know it.

That's just a very basic summary, but this thread was one of my favorites on this forum, and I was rather sad when it died off. I've spoken with Garr about reviving the project, but he has declined for several reasons. So... I've decided to take up the mantle. If the Pavilion is interested, I can recruit them for the cause, and I'll post the results of the various battles here. Earth is in danger, and we need you.

I will not, however, be using X-COM, primarily because I don't have it. I do, however, have a substitute - a fan-made spiritual successor entitled "UFO: Alien Invasion" that works along much the same principles.

Pav be willing, I am ready to start this project up once more. I do have my... trepidations, however. There's a reason I went to Garr first - he's had experience with this sort of thing, and I know I'm not half the comedian he is. He managed to put a special feel into that X-COM thread, something I enjoyed greatly, and I'm not sure I'll be able to do the same. But I have to try. I'm making this thread before I make any commitments, though, just to see if anyone would be interested.

If you are interested in joining, just let me know - and give me some idea as to the kind of equipment you'd like. Otherwise, I'll make my own decisions based on what the team needs. We've got quite a selection, under five different disciplines:

Close Combat: Pistols, Machine Pistols, Submachine Guns, Riot Shotguns, Micro Shotguns, Stun Rods
    Assault: Assault Rifle
    Sniper: Sniper Rifle
    Heavy Weapons: Flamethrower, Machine Gun
High Explosives: Rocket Launcher, Grenade Launcher

And now, since I insist on having a story for anything I do:

It has been six and a half months since the aliens first attacked. Hundreds of UFOs have descended to earth over these six and a half months, each of them intent only on destruction. Their motives are unknown, and their only purpose seems to be to indiscriminately kill as many humans as possible. The soldiers of the world are no match for the aliens powerful technology, and by the time enough forces can gather to repel the alien attacks, they leave and strike at another target. The governments of the world can only watch as their nations are picked apart little by little.

Though the arrival of the aliens has brought a temporary ceasefire to ongoing World War III, the various political blocs of the world still will not cooperate. Each still seeks to gain some advantages over its foes. They refused aid from others, not wishing for the enemy to gain valuable intelligence on their territory or not wishing to appear weak. Each is reluctant to divert resources to help the other nations, wary of overexerting themselves or leaving their foes too strong in the aftermath of the alien invasion. The lack of any large-scale invasion by the aliens – only small strike teams – gives the nations of the world a false sense of security, a feeling that the threat is not as great as it is.

There is only one force capable of crossing national boundaries and dealing with the threat – an organization known only to itself, known as PHALANX. For decades, the organization in some form or other has dealt covertly with alien threats to humanity, with varying degrees of success, but now they face their greatest challenge. They must go across the world and deal with the alien craft as they land or are shot down, and eliminate the aliens before they cause too much damage.

And they are no MIB, no all-powerful government agency. Even in their home country of the US, officially they do not exist, because they are not an official group. They are, effectively, an anti-alien vigilante group. They have only whatever equipment they can scavenge and whatever personnel they can trust. But now, with aliens attacking and the threat of the world openly at stake, they have no shortage of either.

Will they be enough to turn the tide?

Oh yeah, as a bit of an afterthought here, I suppose one of the reasons I waited so long to post this is because I'm not sure how to go about this. I've been playing the game on Easy, and at this point I'm very well set-up, and I'd likely use the Pavilionates as one of the secondary teams. The reason for this is that, well, the aliens have been sending a lot of UFOs at me. I just recently encountered my 200th UFO, and my "main" team has done about 100 missions. Needless to say, if I used the Pavilionites as a "main" team, things would get old fairly quickly, especially before the plot even had time to progress. Now the question is, do I start a new file on a harder difficulty and take the time to get a second team, or use the one I have...

Oh, for anyone that signs up, I'll have to get some information on what kind of equipment they want. The equipment list is much more broad than what X-COM had, so there's probably something for everyone. I'll post up a list of stuff shortly, however.

I don't quite get it. But I'll probably do it anyhow.

Yeah, I'm horrible at explaining like that. I know I've botched the first post up horribly and I'm not certain how to correct it... ah well. The link to the previous thread is the best explanation I can give.

Yeah, I glanced over that, and still didn't get it. So it wasn't really you. I mean, is it just us specifying what equipment loadout we want, and then waiting to hear if our guy got jacked up or not in the game? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Well, when it comes down to it, that seems a pretty good assessment of it. Of course, finding out whether we got "jacked up" (whatever that means) isn't just what we in the thread were waiting for by any means...

What's the difference between Assault and Heavy Weapons?

The same as the difference between an assault rifle and a SAW or light machine gun. I'll put up a more comprehensive list shortly...

Make it Assault for me, then.

Okay, I've gotten you four guys put into the game and loaded up for action. Your equipment is pretty basic for now. I gave Hrafn an assault rifle, but as Jamos, Red Dragon, and Duel didn't specify what they wanted, I gave them something based on what they had in the previous thread. Thus, I have Jamos a riot shotgun, Red Dragon a machine gun, and Duel a rocket launcher. Here are their stats:

                          Jamos:

                          Red Dragon:

                          Duel:

                          Hrafn:

And a mission finally came up, and so I sent you guys out to deal with it. And since we had such a personnel shortage, I tagged along with a sniper rifle, and had a couple of NPCs too. With some trepediation, for my self-worth as a storyteller and game photographer is on the line:

                          November 10th:

After several days of waiting, I’ve finally been alerted to an alien attack in my area. I’m a little concerned about our little personnel shortage – I’ve only got four recruits in my base. I can understand the shortage – my employer said something about needing to ensure absolute secrecy and other qualifications from the recruits, something I understand given the nature of our organization, but I don’t think I can fight off an alien attack with four soldiers. We could hardly wait for more recruits, and so there was only one option I could see, and that was to boost our numbers by going along with them.

We’re currently in the transport, heading towards the alien attack location – some city called “Mexicali.” I’ve never heard of it, but hopefully this won’t be the last anyone hears of the city. It’s almost an 8-hour flight, and it’s been an awkward one so far, let me tell you that. There was a squad in the base before I got assigned to it, and they’ve been transferred out now but they stayed long enough to shake some of us up with their insane shouts from the medical center. Apparently their last mission was rather hellish, and it was just like the one we’re on now – an alien attack in the big city. At least this time it’ll still be light out. But anyway, we’re all a little anxious over the outcome of this mission and what we’ll face. Red Dragon especially seemed rather nervous. He even tried to make some sort of excuse to stay behind, something about guarding the base. Listening to the former squad’s rantings for too long would shake anyone up. I just hope we all make it out.

Oh, I’ve received word we’ll be meeting up with some of the remnants of the city’s S.W.A.T. forces. Hopefully they’ll be more use than drawing fire. I have my doubts about the use of any human forces against these aliens, but my employer tells me not to worry.

                          That’s easier said than done.

                          Begin Mission:

*the dropship descends on the city towards the reported position of the alien ship – next to a parking garage. As they move in, bright blue flashes of plasma fly towards the ship from the parking garage, but they don’t damage the dropship, which lands safely near the garage*

Pilot: There we go, nap’s over, boys!

*the soldiers deploy from the dropship, noticing a pair of SWAT officers nearby*

SWAT 1: No response from red team. It’s just us…

*the PHALANX soldiers move up to them*

                          Dusk Raven: Sit rep?

SWAT 1: The aliens are holed up in that parking garage. The other squads are making sure the surrounding area is clear, but we’ve volunteered to help you clear this area.

Dusk Raven: Good, anything will help.

*several bright flashes of plasma streak out from the parking garage towards targets unseen. Meanwhile, an alien is spotted on the third floor of the garage*

Dusk Raven: No time to lose! You all move up, I’ll give cover from here!

*the PHALANX and SWAT members move into the garage, while Dusk crouches, takes aim with his sniper rifle, and fires two shots, missing at least once*

*the alien retaliates with a bolt of plasma from its weapon, which also misses. The alien moves further into the parking garage, and Dusk Raven tries for a moment to get a shot, then gives up and moves towards the garage with the rest*

SWAT 2: We can get to the upper floors through these stairs.

Red Dragon: You guys, uh, go ahead and take point.

*the SWAT members move up, while Red Dragon spots a smaller staircase at the other end of the garage*

Red Dragon: You guys go on up without me, I’ll take this other staircase!

Dusk Raven: Good idea, Red! Hrafn, go with him, see if you can set up a cross-fire!

Red Dragon: A crossfire, of course, yes!

*an alien appears at the exit to the third floor, firing at the team but hitting no one*

SWAT 2: Contact! *moves up to the second floor and moves out of the staircase, looking around frantically but finding no one except a very confused civilian*

                          Civilian: Is something wrong, sir?

SWAT 2: Uh, no, just inspecting your garage, citizen.

                          Jamos: Wrong floor!

SWAT 2: Area is clear of hostiles!

*SWAT 1 moves up to the third floor, spotting an alien in the garage area before ducking back into cover*

*Jamos, Duel, and Dusk Raven move up the stairs to SWAT 1’s position, while Red Dragon and Hrafn make their way to the smaller stairwell. An alien pops out of the third floor landing next to SWAT 1 and fires a powerful plasma bolt down at Dusk Raven, who is still on ground floor, hitting and nearly killing him, before ducking back to cover*

Dusk Raven: AGH, s***! *collapses to the ground and manages to crawl to safety*

                          Jamos: Sir!

Dusk Raven: Ah… go on without me… damn, this hurts…

Duel: Don’t worry, sir! I’ll avenge your death!

*SWAT 1 moves onto the landing, spots the culprit, and dispatches it with a couple well-placed SMG bursts*

*SWAT 1 checks the other end, and finds another alien overlooking the area outside, blissfully aware of the soldiers inside. Jamos and Duel move up into a firing position. Jamos fires his shotgun, while Duel readies his rocket launcher*

                          Duel: Eat THIS, m*****f*****!

*the blast kills the alien instantly*

                          Duel: Yes!

                          *meanwhile, on ground floor*

Red Dragon: Sir, you’re sure you don’t need anyone to cover you?

                          Dusk: Yes. *passes out*

Red Dragon: … *moves up the stairwell with Hrafn*

*The SWAT members, Jamos, and Duel move up the stairs, spotting a pair of aliens on the stairwell, which Jamos dispatches with due speed*

[Forgive the red line, Jamos spotted another enemy as he was firing, and so the red line is pointing to where it is]

                          Jamos: Two down, sir!

*Duel reloads his rocket launcher, and the two SWAT members move up and spot a pair of aliens at the top of the stairs, and open fire, killing one*

*the surviving alien returns fire, killing SWAT 2*

SWAT 1: ! *moves onto the top of the garage, searching frantically about for the alien, and finds two. He fires at the green one, and retreats to cover. Meanwhile, Red Dragon at last reaches the top of the stairwell*

Red Dragon: Finally, now - *spots the two aliens* AH! *fires a burst at them, missing totally*

*Red Dragon then retreats into cover*

Hrafn: Quit blocking the stairwell! I’ve come all this way out here and I’m not going to come out here for nothing!

*the green alien rounds the corner behind which SWAT 1 is hiding and shoots at him point-blank, but fails to kill him, and ducks behind cover again*

*Duel then moves out and fires a rocket at the two aliens clustered together*

                          Duel: Here’s one for humanity!

*the resulting blast kills both one of the aliens and, unfortunately, SWAT 1, who didn’t run far enough away from the blast*

                          Duel: Did you SEE that?!

Red Dragon: *looks at SWAT 1’s corpse* Yes, I did, sadly.

Duel: *looks over and sees the unintentional result of his blast* Oops.

*Hrafn edges his way past Red Dragon, who proceeds to flee down the stairs. Hrafn moves up and fires a burst at the remaining alien, but fails to kill it. Finally, Jamos moves up and fires a burst of buckshot into the alien, finishing it off*

                          Jamos: Mission accomplished!

Dusk Raven: *briefly wakes up* Good, good… the SWAT members can secure the area.

Duel: Uh… yes they can, sir.

Well, that didn’t go quite how I planned, losing the two SWAT members like that. The SWAT members were a couple of low-stat soldiers I recruited, gave them some weapons, and threw them into battle and pretended they were SWAT members, and then they went and died. Granted, I might have given them some better equipment or, I dunno, armor, but they really were intended to be redshirts to soak up fire instead of the Pavilionites, and they served quite well in that regard. The SWAT members actually did fairly well, and I honestly thought they were going to make it, which made their deaths rather surprising. SWAT 1’s death was pretty much completely my fault, though – I underestimated the range and thought he was safe. I didn’t move him far enough away.

Otherwise, the mission was a total success. Jamos scored 3 kills, Duel 2. Red Dragon and Hrafn provided a bit of supporting fire, and I succeeded in getting a nice Plasma Blaster shot to the chest. I was actually really lucky to have no one (important) die, as I’d put too much effort into writing this entry as I went to click the Retry button. This also happens to be one of my least favorite levels, as it takes a while and that stairwell is a big death trap.

I’m also surprised by the lack of civilian casualties, considering how many there were in the area. All in all, this mission turned out a lot better than it could have.
