    Series 1 Developer commentary 12-17-10: Episode 10

This is going to be my "official" thread for a developer commentary I'm currently hosting on my blog. I'm going to post a link to the main commentary page, and update each week with a new episode in a new post here, along with a link directly to the new episode.

Series 1: Destiny Beckons Developer Commentary

    Old news below

I've been thinking of doing a commentary "track" for a while now, and between last night and tonight, I have 12 "episodes" in the can. I recorded them live to DVD, and as soon as I rip them to Mpeg4s, I'm gonna post them on my blog. Because I have a surplus right now, I'm thinking of posting one a week. In the 12 episodes, I've progressed about a third of the way through the game. So realistically, there will probably be 36-40 episodes total to the commentary.

    More info as it develops.

    Update 1:

So as I mentioned above, I've recorded 12 of these so far, ranging from 25 to 40 minutes each. I'm ripping and encoding the first one as an MPEG4. Looks like it'll end up being about 100 MB in size. My blog as is allotted 2 gigs for media files, so I might either need to remove some superfluous stuff I uploaded that's just me screwing around with the PS3's EyeCreate program, or pay a bit more, and get the next tier of size (7 gigs, I think).

I guess I could go Draygone's route and post this on viddler or whatever, but I just like the idea of hosting this on my own site. So hopefully within a few hours here, the first episode will be uploaded to my blog, and will be linked to here. I'm gonna try to rip/encode as many as possibly today, but I'm only going to try to submit one a week so I don't run out before I get back to playing the game. I'm hoping to record 3-4 more tonight, but we'll see.

So, in a way, I guess this would be a self-LP? I did the same thing with my own game, a while back.

        Re: Series 1 Developer commentary

Yeah...it's pretty much a self LP. Although, with the game being 15-20 hours or so, I'm thinking it's gonna be upwards of 36 episodes long.

The other thing is, and I'm not sure if you do this/did this in your LPs, but I try to keep a conversational flow going (albeit, it's only myself talking) even when there's quote unquote downtime, so I do reference the Pav, the Mag, and people from both sites. In fact, in one of my last episodes, I referenced you, Draygone, and the LPs you are working on.

I've also mentioned/discussed a number of other people in the (developer) community, including Obright, Pagerron, Lausen, Vonwert, Wavelength, Valk, Ix, etc. And occasionally, I'll get on a tangent or talk about influences, so Demon's Souls and LOST have come up on multiple occasions (no shocker there).

But as I've listened to each "episode" at least twice now, the commentary seems to be more of a stream-of-consciousness thing, so even those who do not create with/use the software might still find value in watching them.

Nah, I generally have a lot of trouble coming up with things to talk about, which is probably why I've yet to gain membership at a let's play forum. Maybe I'm just trying too hard to come up with something interesting, though.

Luckily, again after having listened to all twelve of these, I did not come anywhere near not having something to talk about.

What DOES worry me, though, is that, aside from gameplay mechanics and whatnot, when I go through long stretches of REs in the second and third areas of my game, I'm gonna run out of things to talk about. Granted, this has yet to be an issue through the first twelve, so we'll see.

Oh, and my first encode ended up being almost 300 MB, so I'm re-encoding it to see how big of a hit the quality takes.

EDIT: Looks as if this encode will be about 180 MB. Just gotta wait for it to finish to see if the quality is garbage.

EDIT 2: I ended up making the second one at 150 MB, and it looked like ass. So hopefully the third time will be the charm here. I did a preview at a total file size of 200 MB, and it looked perfectly fine.

It's interesting how you had that buzzing noise going on. Sounds exactly the same as the noise my phone sometimes creates on my speakers when it's recieving signals.

I'll be posting my comments, here, by the way. I don't trust many sites with my e-mail address. Also, even though it's your own game, I'll go ahead and link it in my project pages.

Re: Series 1 Developer commentary is live!

Yeah, Valk already pointed that out.

As they were all recorded live, technically, there was no editing involved. If you can get past the first 12 and a half minutes, the game audio subsides a bit, and I think in subsequent episodes, it's even lower.

I might re-encode this, run it through an audio editor, and see if I can take the game volume down a bit, and then repost it. Really, I just wanted to get something out there.

And it was kinda hard for me to tell as I was recording exactly how loud the mixdown was. Plus, when I listened to the episodes the few times that I did, it was either through a 5.1 setup, or via headphones, which my receiver by default makes a "phones surround" thing. So both sounded good to me. I didn't notice a problem until I uploaded.

But if you can get through/skip past the first 12 and a half minutes, it gets better, and the upcoming ones should not have this problem. I hope to get a laptop soon, so this problem will go by the wayside at that point.

EDIT: All of that was in reference to your comment before the edit.

After your edit: I think it has something to do with my noise cancelling headphones and interference with the microphone. And thanks for the linkage. I would appreciate any comments on the page itself, but if you choose not to, that's cool. You know, though, you CAN just make a fake Yahoo email without any real info specifically for things like this.

I'm just thinking that if I left comments there, and you left responses, I'd want to see those responses, which would probably involve the e-mail address being used to let me know.

Anyway, here's a link to the page linking back to this page. If you'd rather the description be something else, let me know.

Re: Series 1 Developer commentary is live!

Aside from the first half or so being a bit too loud with the RPGM music, and with me getting off to a slow start with the commentary, I think the second half settles into a pretty decent conversational tone which carries over to all the rest that I've done.

As for the description on the front page, if you could actually have it read, "Now, there's no question that I'm somewhat of a narcissist, but in order to seem less so, I maintain that this is not myself doing a Let's Play for my own game. This is me doing a developer commentary for my own game, letting the viewer in on gameplay secrets and coding tricks, interspersed with ramblings concerning LOST, Demon's Souls, the state of the video game industry, and the relative merits of Italian Beef sandwiches."

                      Thanks, Dray.

EDIT: Also, for the link to the game at the Pav, you linked to the wrong game...heh.

You remembered you had the power to handle it yourself, I see. :P

I decided to go a step furthur by changing "LP'd by Perversion" to "Developer Commentary by Perversion".

Also, I decided to post comments on your blog, after all.

Heh...yeah. Trying to save you a bit of work. And thanks for the other edit. The reason I changed my description to what I did was due to how the, "Game by Perversion, LPed by Perversion," looked. It made me look like a bigger narcissist than I really am (only slightly, though...hehe...*sigh*).

                          Also, replied to yer comment.

I have about 3 other projects I'm working on now (including the contest game), plus I've had food poisoning for the last 3 days. But at some point, if you can rip the audio to a WAV or hi-res MP3 and send it to me, I can remove that hum for you. No problem. In fact the vast majority of the time spent would be uploading/downloading twice.

                            Nice work, btw.

Yeah, after about ep 3, there are really no problems with volume/hum. I'm hoping to get a laptop really soon here, and once I do, I'm probably gonna re-encode and remaster the audio and re-upload it. Thanks for the offer, though.
