JJ returns 2010
Edit by Denmo:
Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 - PS3 version, and major game overhaul due for release in Nov/Dec 2012.
Read here and check out the .PDF's for all the details.
What you need to know if you want to play:
Purchasing
The game is currently $15-20 bucks at your local game store. There is no subscription fee as of yet. The installation requires about 12 gigs of space. You need a computer able to comfortably play current gen titles, preferably a quad-core processor. I'd also strongly recommend investing in a USB controller, though any USB 360/PS3 controller works fine provided you have the right drivers.
If you're not sure if you can handle the game, run the benchmark. A score of 1000-2000 is decent. A blank screen means you need a better video card.
Registering
When you register to play, you need to register here. You will be required to set up a payment plan, but you won't be charged for it. After creating a Square Enix ID, enter your account page:
1. Under 'Service and Options', click 'Select Service'
2. Click Final Fantasy XIV
3. Click the button "Add a Service Account"
4. Follow the prompts to set up your account. You will need your game's Key code to activate.
Square Enix has 2 payment methods, neither of which is good. ClickandBuy is a third-hand credit card charging service with an office in Great Britain. Players dealing with ClickandBuy (myself included) have reported shady practices with the company, like "usage fees". I would recommend not using it.
The other option is to purchase Crysta using UltimatePay. UltimatePay is a service that lets you pick the payment method via things like Paypal and Amazon, so it's a bit less shady if you can stomach stuff like Paypal. Crysta works like PSN/Xbox Live/Wii Points. Again, you won't be charged for buying Crysta to set up the payment plan.
Once you've set up your payment method, your account will automatically be put into "Free Trial Period" status. Now you need to register for at least one character to the service. If you try to play the game without registering a character, you will receive an error message when you log in.
1. Go back to your account page
2. Select A Service -> Final Fantasy XIV
3. Find the service you just added, and click "Options List"
4. Right at the top should be a option for Characters. Click "Add new Options"
5. Add 1-8 characters. When the game is no longer free, each character you add will be an extra $1 per month, but for now you can make as many as you want.
Settings
Before you start the game up, consider my advice - Do NOT play in fullscreen mode. Why? Because every time you alt-tab out of the game, the game will crash. Play it in windowed mode instead.
Read this guide for more on graphics settings.
Updating
If its your first time starting up, the game will start updating. Expect this to take several hours, as the game has changed a lot since release. It's a peer-to-peer download. If it's going too slow, or stops for no reason, consider downloading BitTorrent and doing the following:
1. Start the patch downloader, wait for it to start downloading, then cancel and exit out.
2. Go to My Documents -> My Games -> FINAL FANTASY XIV -> Downloads -> ffxiv -> 2d2a390f OR 48eca647 -> metainfo
3. Inside metainfo is the .torrent file you need. Find the most recent one and begin downloading it via BitTorrent.
4. Once it's done, restart the game. It should check your files for whats downloaded and then begin installing. If not, then double check to make sure you downloaded the right patch.
This was almost necessary when we started playing back in 2010, but since then SE has fixed up its patcher a bit. I haven't had the need to use BitTorrent for the last few patches, but if you think you do I'm leaving this here for you.
If you want to play with us:
Our server is Wutai
Our Linkshell is The Inner Circle. Click that link to see a list of our names, and you can add us to your friends list in game to see if we're online. Anyone with Leader status or higher can invite you to the linkshell.
RESOURCES YOU MIGHT FIND HELPFUL:
The Lodstone - This is SE's online game manual. It has all the basic info you need to start playing. THERE IS VERY LITTLE IN-GAME TUTORIAL, I'm warning you now. I'd suggest having this handy, or asking someone nicely if something confuses you.
FFXIV at Yellow Gremlin - the best XIV wiki I've seen. A very good compendium for items/skills/monsters. Very handy if you plan on crafting.
