    Concept Art and Misc. Art

I originally posted the first concept design of an "Angel" in the characters topic, and it seemed a bit popular given IMs and PMs recieved afterwards.

so I figured I'll show a bit more. a warning about the quality though: these were never meant to be shown to anyone. they were just to help me flesh out my ideas. so there will be mistakes, there will be proportion issues, some stuff may even be drawn in a way that doesnt make any goddamn sense.

there was a TON of concept art done for this game. everything was drawn and redesigned dozens of times before it was turned into a sprite. there's stuff I did concept art for that never made it into the game. characters and areas completely removed from the story because I decided to go back and change the entire direction of the game.

Designing the "Angels" was of course, the first part of making the game. My goal was pretty intimidating: make them look other-worldly, a bit dangerous, but also noble and trustworthy. This (I hope) was accomplished by their facial designs. even in the final game, it's unchanged - even the framing of their faces remained exactly the same. no matter how oddly I designed the rest of their heads, if I kept the eyes big, easy to focus on, and the face with as little detail as possible, they looked friendly. so they don't have pupils. the skin around their eyes is black, to further emphasize their eyes. the mask that slides over their mouth is rarely detailed. when they don't have their masks on, their noses don't have nostrils, but rather small slits along the sides of their nose that can seal shut, making them completely invisible. their lip color is the same as their skin tone. everything about their faces is designed to look friendly, to offset the often intimidating armor they wear.

originally, their eyes were going to be white. but I didnt think that would look good as a sprite, and it didnt really show any emotion. so it was changed to yellow. with yellow, I can shade the eyes and give them a bit more life.

So here's the first ever design for an "Angel" I did. this was a day or so after the idea popped into my head. I'm still quite fond of it. pulls off the armor look well, doesnt look mechanical, doesnt really look like anything familiar. but the damn thing ended up being too complicated to convert into a sprite. so I started adjusting the design.

This IS Lucid, by the way. if you remember his profile, it mentions he broke the visor off his armor because it covered his eyes and made it hard to see things the way they were supposed to be seen. that's included here. look at the top left side of his head. you'll see something that comes to a jagged, black end right above his eyes. yeah. that's where the visor was. When I first posted this, I didnt remember if this was supposed to be Lucid or not. but then I remembered the broken piece of armor.

oh, another thing. while the "Angels" are primarily white now, originally, only their faces and face mask were to be white. they could be all sorts of colors. they werent seperated into different classes back then either.

Below, we have an image drawn a month or so later. It is, of course, Lucid. and Megan!

Megan isnt standing upright in the above image, she's supposed to be in the process of collapsing to her knees, but when I got down to her waist I realized the bottom of the paper was dangerously close, so I stopped. why do I point this out? because the height makes no sense at all if it's not stated! also, she's wearing overalls. she's a bit of a tomboy. she doesnt wear overalls at all in the game though. she ended up looking like a hick with them on. and since the game takes place in the south, I didnt want to cross that line.

I REALLY debated showing this here. because it shows some things about Lucid (some of which are still in his current design, go look) that I havent touched on at all in the story or character write ups. can you guess what I'm talking about? yeah, I bet you can. I will say this: the blades are not really important, they are a modification made to his "unknown type" armor, and he doesnt have them for very long. I don't like the body design at all, but I really like the head design. he still has elements of this head model today.

anyways, I showed it because I think it shows their relationship pretty well. and having said that, and remembering exactly what the pose in this image is, I will step in and say that at this point, the angels were ASEXUAL. Lucid isnt shoving megan's head anywhere bad. I swear. oh my god, how did I not even notice this until now. if you look, her head is turned towards whatever lucid is pointing at, so... yeah. it looks bad no matter what. urg.

    Random story development stuff -

Megan wasnt named Megan at the point the above image was made, she was Alice, and she was an orphan that Lucid took in. she lived with him in the supply "shop" he ran in town. the exact location wasnt nailed down yet, and neither was most of the story.

Your artwork is awesome. I like how you designed the Angels. It brings a fresh look to your game. When most people think of Angels they think of wings and long flowing robes.

well, they're not actual angels. they told humans to call them that because they thought it would show their peaceful intentions.

their species does have a proper name, and it does come up in-game.

You drew this yourself? You surprize me, chum, I really didn't know you could draw like this. I like the overall idea, and I know exactly what you mean in regards to the second drawing. Me, personally, I hated it when I couldnot fit what I want into the canvas (from a former painter's perspective). Good luck on the project, Valk.

Just for fun, this is the first idea I had for a design for the overseer class.

As you can see, I have a very bad habit of not realizing these things have to be turned into sprites to be put into the game while I'm drawing them. I've gotten past that now, and take a more minimalist appraoch to the character designs. the top plate over the mouth was supposed to be articulated, and would move up and down when the character talked.

this design was of course, scrapped.

Awesome pictures! It's not often we see mecha at a RPG developing forum. The contrast between a small girl and a large, armored dude goes really well together.

More like 'adapted' though, right? I still say you're better off starting with something more fleshed out, before you try to render it in pixels. I think it'll wind up looking much better because you went through the trouble.

                  Re: Design concepts

most things were retained, like the smaller slit in the armor for the Overseer's eye, the armor plating on their neck, and the mouth plate being put on the top of the rest of the armor since it's not retractable.

                    Re: Design concepts

Update! dont just skip the text!

I havent had to do any concept work for a while. what with the main game almost being done, and I'm now working on the side story that unlocks after you finish the main game, that is talked about in the updates topic. (don't worry, it uses most of the assets from the main game, so not much new stuff has to be added, it's going well!)

SO. I had to do a new design. one I've decided to show, as I think the reveal may make the people who have been following my game progress updates stay interested a bit longer.

so please read everything, and pay attention!

This is NOT a character in the side-story:

because that's Lucid's "unknown-type" character design, and he's not a character in the side-story. Why am I posting a picture of him, that I've already posted in the character topic? because he's important for this update. he's important because he has no idea what "class" he is when he resets to this design after his failed class change. it effects the way he behaves in ways that he's not comfortable with. He wants to know what he is, and why he's starting to act the way he is. Lucid's lack of understanding of his true self is major part of the first game.

so no, that's lucid, and he's not a part of the side-story cast.

but reading all that above was important.

because this is the main character in the side-story:

and despite looking a lot like Lucid does, she knows exactly what she is.

Maybe this will let you figure out why the side-story at the end of the main game had to be done.

I won't reveal her name or coloration (or even her full equipment!), but I can say a few things about my feelings towards her.

I like her more than any other character in the game. she's tons of fun to write. I love her behavior, the way she talks, and her incredible enthusiasm for everything she does. I really regret that she's stuck in the side-story rather than the main game, because I really want to use her more. I knew her character would exist from the very start of this project, but I never gave any thought to what she'd be like until a few weeks ago. so yeah, I like her, and with any luck, you will too.

and now, unless I dig up some old stuff, that's the absolute end of the concept art for this game.

But I still have other stuff I can share.

for those who are just checking in with this topic because it's the most recent one updated, I have re-written and updated ALL the story topics in this forum, and numbered them in the order you should read them. all the info now accurately reflects the final version of the game, and no more early ideas are posted about the backstory, plot, or even characters. everything is 100% final now. the only topics that should see updates now are the screenshot topic, and the update topic. unless I get questions. I'll answer those if I get them.

game still doesnt have a title! what the hell. the side-story still does! double what the hell!

Re: Concept Art and Misc. Art

First non-concept art posting of scribblage:

I really need to stop using a damn webcam to get these images online.

This is Lucid and Megan. from a scene in the game. yes.

a lot of the detail work, and even some lines (especially on megan's face, which looks very distorted here) are lost due to the webcam. I'll try to get to a scanner.

This is only my second time ever drawing the two together, and it was just done last night.

I still cannot believe how much Lucid has changed in the two years this game has been in-progress for. god damn.

why am I wasting time on drawing the characters when I need to keep working on the game itself? I do it whenever I have trouble writing a scene, or even arranging and drawing the sprites for it. it gets me into the moment better. I needed to think back to this scene from the game for something, and watching the sprites move around on screen wasnt cutting it. so I drew the scene. and it worked.

I shut up now and get back to work.
