    RPGM3 Minigame contest starts....NOW!!!

The last contest of the year (and technically first of the new year) will be a minigame contest for RPG Maker 3. Why a minigame contest, you may wonder. A lot of people think that RPGM3's toolset is limiting, and that its field map creator is the software's saving grace. Hence, the last "small" contest, Field of Dreams.

This contest is a way to prove that RPGM3 users are capable of creating interesting and unique minigames by using the supposedly "limited" toolset available to them.

    The details are as follows:

The contest begins now, and will end on Sunday, January 18th. There will be a limit of 3 minigames a single user can submit for judging. If more than one minigame will be submitted by a single creator, they will need to be submitted in the same data file. You can put them in the same room if you want, or on different field maps. As long as they are all on one data file, you are free to lay them out however you want.

As for layout, the judging will focus solely on the minigames themselves. If you want to have a short storyline behind the minigame(s), this is fine. Once they are submitted to the site for others to play, it might even be preferable. But the judging will take into account ONLY the minigames themselves.

I will be the sole judge of the contest, and the minigames will be judged on the following basis: four categories worth 25 points each, for a total of 100 points.

1)Originality-how unique or original is the minigame?

2)Tech proficiency-does the creator of the game maximize the potential of the software, laughing in the face of its supposed limitations?

3)Fun factor-the minigame might contain 17 different events with 12 or more modes each, with 3 nested val cond branches in each mode, and might use 38 different variables, but is it actually fun to play?

4)Aesthetics-a catch-all that includes visual and/or auditory appeal and overall smoothness of the experience (ie-is the interface clunky? Is it free from bugs? If words or dialogue are present, are they filled with typos and grammatical errors?).

The only other restriction is that anything submitted for this contest MUST be unpublished (ie-not submitted online elsewhere). If you have an idea you used elsewhere, and want to rework it for this contest, that's fine. I'm just looking for NEW material so the creative types at the Pavilion are not resting on their past laurels.

The definition of "minigame" is up to you, but please refrain from submitting simple, "Open treasure chest A to get key B"-type puzzles if that's the entirety of the minigame. Also, PLEASE, no simple fetch quests. This contest is meant to bring out the best of the community, and inspire others, so try to top your own past accomplishments.

Most of all, though, this contest is meant to be fun. Good luck everyone!!

PM me when you wish to submit for judging, and I'll PM you my email. PS3 format is preferred, but .max files are also acceptable.

There will be a first, second, and third place, but each entrant will only be able to place once, meaning the same person cannot get second and third, for example, if they submit more than one minigame. The highest-scored game will get first, and even if the same person gets the next highest score, second place will go to another creator whose game scores the next highest. In event of ties, whichever minigame scores highest in the tech proficiency category will be the winner.

    Prizes are to be determined.

Why don't you just set up a new email address instead of forcing people to flood your box with PMs asking for an irrelevant sidestep?

I'll take that into consideration. I still will send it only via PM so searchbots don't find it and spam the hell out of it. Plus, I need a new one I can give at work during transactions, anyway.

      Thanks, Rick.

That... wasn't my point. You can set up a contest-only email and it doesn't matter that searchbots will spam the hell out of it. In the interim of the contest it's not exactly likely you'll get a lot of it anyway.

I guess I'll have to buy RPGM3 now and PWN all of you!

TBS is coming shortly... I finally got off my lazy self and contacted Datel, so new Max Drive software is coming thus allowing me to release my TBS.

Question: Are battles (using RM3's default battle system) acceptable within the course of the minigame?

I don't see why not...although I'd REALLY like to see how YOU define minigame if you're going to include battles using the default setup.

I left the definition for minigame wide open, but I guess to narrow it down a bit, I personally do not consider a side quest with battles a minigame (not to say that this was your idea). But I really do not wanna put restrictions on what you choose to call a minigame, so yeah, battles are fine. Just remember the originality category is worth 25% of the score.

Well, as the simplest example, the 'Coliseum'/'Arena' minigames found in lots of RPGs necessarily need the battles. That's NOT what I'm planning to do... after all, an Arena without context is just lame.

Without saying too much (because I don't want to say too much until I actually MAKE something), I was planning on using battles as a tangible way of rewarding/penalizing the player for their performance in the minigame, and as an extra layer of strategy.

So, has anyone worked on a Mini-Game yet? I just started work on my second so I'm just a little curious. I'm hoping for a good outcome.

Status update, if you don't mind...

It's been two weeks since this was announced, and, granted, we've got more than a month to go, but how many people have something in the works (besides Lausen )?

Well I'm definitely in. Say, is it against the rules for us to work together on 1 minigame? That wasn't brought up and I'm curious

                              Re: RPGM3 Minigame contest starts....NOW!!!

I've been giving this a lot of thought and I think I've got a minigame that I really want to make (and it is the one I was considering earlier, and still will implement battles in roughly the same way). I'm gonna be battling two things.

First of all time, I'm on vacation from the 1st to the 5th and also the 9th to the 12th, and of course working a bunch in between. Maybe I can give it a few hours each night and cram after the 12th or something.

The other is the 10-character limit in rooms. I was hoping to randomize the characters that would appear in certain places. I thought maybe I'd steal a trick from Obi's Pavilion Iron Chef, but that won't work, because I want 10-20 characters onscreen at once. So really, I'm not sure how I'm going to pull this off, I may have to dump that bit of randomization. Bite me, RPGM3!

(Speaking of Pavilion Iron Chef, did we ever decide whether a previously-unreleased "episode 2" of it was a valid entry for this contest?)

So anyway, just wanted to sound off that I'm going to try to come up with an entry for this contest, and I'm echoing Lausen's hope that we get a great turnout for it. Which reminds me, Lausen, you are on one heck of a roll with Contests lately; I can't wait to play your minigames, whatever they are!

Duel, madcopper, you guys still planning on throwing down the gauntlet?
