Saw Blade Runner 2049 last night. I thought it was phenomenal. Another good one I've seen in theaters recently is Mother! It's not for everybody but if you have pretentious tastes like I do you'll love it.

One eye is much better than the others and I tend to focus more with it. That does not mix well with those damned glasses. God, I regretted going.

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

Yes, and I STILL don't know if I liked it. I enjoyed the action and I think most of the parts everyone else is hating on don't phase me. It's just really hard to sort it all out with a single viewing.

What I was (actually) frustrated by:
*** SPOILERS ***

The garbage casino planet.
Leia taking flight.
BB-8 going all R2-in-the-prequels-mode.
Introducing too many new force tricks at once in general.
Kylo's hand being wet after talking with Rey.

*** END SPOILERS ***

What people are frustrated by that doesn't phase me:
*** SPOILERS ***

Rian Johnson murdering every thread started in The Force Awakens.
Not learning about Snoke. (You honestly don't learn THAT much about Palpatine in the original trilogy.)
Luke dies from his astral projection.
Poe gets treated like an impulsive child.
Gravity-based bombers in space in the opening scene.
Holdo's lightspeed trick.
Kylo and Rey being powerful enough to make cocky old Snoke unable to accurately multi-task.
The humor undercutting numerous scenes.
Rose potentially screws over the entire rebellion by saving Poe.

*** END SPOILERS ***

Impressive things:
*** SPOILERS ***

Rian Johnson putting scenes from ESB and RoTJ in there so that you can't just mirror RoTJ next time.
Feeling like there were awesome fights even though there was literally never a lightsaber battle.
Mark Hamill.
A million and one subtle visual explanations and foreshadowing.

*** END SPOILERS ***

Overall, fun movie if you can detach yourself from what IS and IS NOT Star Wars. I can understand both mindsets of love it as a masterpiece and hating what seems to be too radically different than what came before it.

I thought it sucked. I'm perfectly happy with defying expectations, what's obnoxious is the constant winking into the camera every time you subvert assumptions.

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

I've penciled in seeing this Jan 2nd when I have off to go see it with my girlfriend and I'm intrigued by all these stories about this; but, I really am not enough of a Star Wars fan that I think the movie will annoy me because something did or didn't happen.

At long as the movie is entertaining I doubt I really care what happens.

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

I thought it was great. Finally gave me what I've been wanting in a Star Wars movie for many years.

Objectively speaking, I can see why some fans got annoyed. But I think they're letting pettiness prevent them from admitting that he movie is actually objectively good

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

I find the downplaying of the opinion of people who disliked it very annoying. I'm not emotionally attached to Star Wars, it's just a lame movie.

*** SPOILERS ***
My biggest peeve with the movie is that it just ****s on everything JJ set-up. I'm not a JJ fan really, and TFA was a pretty lame retread that lacked creativity but overall solid movie. I'm totally on board with putting a spin on these things, but Rian Johnson just largely ****s on all of it. Give us anti-climactic resolutions to countless things like Snoke and Phasma. Finn's subplot... sheesh. I don't even want to get into that. I hate the lack of world building in these movies, totally lacking the fun heroes journey. Rose is possibly the most boring Star Wars character of all time. The humor is absolutely AWFUL. It was consistently falling flat in my theater and WAY too much of it. I liked the force connection with Rey and Kylo, although they had to shove some dumbass humor even into these scenes with Kylo shirtless. Like for ****'s sake. I also liked the throne room fight scene. That's really about it.

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

Did definitely feel like a writing game where the dude's like, never mind this plot thread, I'm going to abruptly cut it.

But that's not why I found it meh. Just didn't have any compelling scenes. But I dunno, I'm not 10 years old anymore. Also the scene at the end in front of the blast door felt oddly melodramatic. Reminded me of Troy 2004 in a bad way.

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

I don't have the taste to jump on the bandwagon it's got (I saw an article with a headline like "The Last Jedi is the most intellectual Star Wars film" and rolled my eyes), but I thought Star Wars was really good, maybe the kind of star wars movie I've wanted to see for a long time. It wasn't flawless, but I thought it was really good at working with the collective mythos of the entire series and utilizes the perspective that comes with existing for multiple decades.

Anyway, I got a moviepass so I pretty much go see everything these days:

Blade Runner 2049 - Despite literally nodding off in the theatre during this, I found it captivating. You can probably claim Ford was phoning it in again but I honestly felt like the film found its heart once he got back in the picture. Better than the first film, Ryan Gosling might be one of my favorite actors at this point.

Murder On The Orient Express - I generally like Kenneth Branagh, but outside of the shakespeare productions I don't think much of him as a filmmaker and this didn't change my mind. Clearly a pet project for all involved, a fun cold opening and a film that doesn't really hit its mark for the rest of the runtime. Some real nice looking shots, I'm willing to give the eventual sequel a look.

Justice League - Inoffensive and Forgettable, let this be the end of this messy franchise.

Lady Bird - A pleasant film that's riding everyone's crap mood for this year to huge success. I'm not sure it's worthy of the huge praise, and I had some real issues with the finale, but satisfyin' none the less.

Coco - Pixar's had similar movies before, but I think this might be the finest refinement of their formula and it just might dethrone my prior favorite of theirs (Ratatouille).

Three Billboards Over Ebbing County - Pretty dang good, I feel like if you seen the trailers you got the whole film, but it's a fascinating character study.

The Shape Of Water - Better than GDT's last few movies, still feel like it's too involved in being modern folklore and being offbeat that it's left wanting in the end. As always, really great use of colors.

Gonna see I, Tonya sometime this week.

I just want to warn everyone here not to believe the jackhat critics who are calling Bright "The worst film of 2017". Seriously, I'm convinced that those reviews are hit pieces. Hollywood really hates Netflix right now.

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

A few more Star Wars thoughts.

*** SPOILERS ***
I can't fault Episode 8 for cutting too many of Episode 7's plot threads, considering that's basically what E7 did to the original trilogy. That's what bummed me out the most about E7 -- the dictator was killed, the empire was shattered, Vader had redeemed himself. Oh wait, nevermind. The empire is back, and it's being led by another old, ugly looking Sith lord. It crushes the fledgling republic without breaking a sweat, then fights the same group of rebels led by the exact same people. As if the Star Wars universe is doomed to repeat a cycle of empire vs rebels forever. At least in Lucas's vision, there was a sort of grand evolution to the galaxy. From a narrative perspective, I would've enjoyed E8 more if like 40%-50% of the screen time had been flashbacks to the period between E6 and E7. That narrative space seems much more interesting to me than what we're getting.
*** END SPOILERS ***

So far, I'm really only digging Ben Solo. The rest is making me think Star Wars truly is just a movie to get kids to buy toys.

Watch the film and decide that for yourself, then. But after doing so, can you honestly tell me that Bright is the worst film of 2017?

Re: In this thread, we talk about films

Oh, almost undoubtedly it is not. What you seem to not get about reviews is that no one cares if you thought it was okay, only if you thought it was amazing and/or complete garbage. Nothing new here. Iron Fist got panned pretty much universally and it's really just blindingly mediocre in most ways.
