Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

As a retro gamer, the inflated prices on stuff is depressing. Official gamecube controllers are hella pricey.

Edit: I just realized that's not much of an opinion, but I had to tell someone.

Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

To be honest, Final Fantasy VII is one of my least favorite Final Fantasy games.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a good game, but I personally never found it to be one of the most impressive games in the series. Maybe because I played it long after the original release, and long after playing later FF games like VIII and X, so I didn't see it quite the same way as those who played it when it was a revolution in gaming.

Out of all the Final Fantasy games I've played, FFVII easily has my least favorite cast of characters, and least favorite storyline all around. Any time I've tried to replay it, I rarely make it through all of disc 1 before I get tired of it and go to another game.

COME AT ME FOOLS

Jokes aside, I'm used to it. Like I said, I don't think it's a bad game, it's just not one of my favorites in the series.

There's also a coupon pitching an offer for a free pitchfork with the purchase of a torch. Man can you **** someone up with a pitchfork. So brutal...

Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

Before I played Final Fantasy VII, I didnít think it was going to be very good. I donít remember how I was introduced to the gameómaybe it was a store ad, or a magazine, or that wild 1997 TV commercialóbut I do remember hating it.

Iíd log onto message boards and nod furiously as I read diatribes about how the next Final Fantasy would be all flash, no substance. Like many other gamers weaned on the trial-by-fire NES and the classic 16-bit bliss of Super Nintendo, I believed that video games were going downhill. I thought an increasing focus on graphical prowess over good gameplay was tearing the soul from my favorite pastime, and I worried that my favorite series was succumbing to the trend. ďWho needs 3D?Ē I would think. Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI had captured my imagination with their chunky sprites and low resolutions. Why did Final Fantasy VII have to be soÖ pretty?

Then I played the game. As it turned out, the people who made Final Fantasy VII knew what they were doing.

If you have not played Final Fantasy VII, you might wonder why itís so widely beloved. You might watch some gameplay on YouTube or even download it on your Vita (which you almost certainly own) and scoff at the poor translation and blocky characters. You might wonder how this was ever considered the pinnacle of video game technology

Here, my Vita-loving friend, is your answer: Final Fantasy VII is beloved because itís weird. Its creative success reveals a truth: That the most successful Japanese role-playing games succeed because they embrace strangeness. The least successful Japanese role-playing games fail because they take themselves too seriously.

In Final Fantasy VII you will go snowboarding, memorize military march choreography, dress up like a sailor, and have disturbing encounters with burly men at a seedy brothel. You will chase a giant stuffed animal around a flying casino. You will settle a climactic showdown with a slap-fight atop a giant cannon. Whereas Final Fantasy VI took goofy characters and put them in serious situations, Final Fantasy VII takes serious characters and puts them into goofy situations. Both approaches work well, albeit in different ways. In FFVIIís case, the oddball minigames and wacky scenarios make a welcome contrast to an otherwise dreary plot.

Final Fantasy VII has a fun combat system, a masterful soundtrack, a cast of interesting characters, and all sorts of cool secrets and things to do. Those are all ordinary and understandable reasons to consider a game good. But the reason it is widely considered to be one of the greatest RPGs of all time is because it is weird as hell.

Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

I know I'm in the minority camp on this, but I just didn't like FFVII as much as FFVIII, FFX, or FFXII. I was so confused by the plot, and the goofy stuff (doing squats) was so ridiculous to me. Then again, I was in 11th grade when FFVII came out, and I was just starting to be OK with high school (I hated middle school and the 9th and 10th grades), so it must've just been a time-of-life set of circumstances that dampened the experience.

Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

My current FF listing:

1. FFX (hard to top this one)
2. FF 12 (took a couple years and a HD remake, but 12 is really good)
3. FF 15 (give it a chance, ya nerds)
4. FF 7 (battle system is solid, but its the cinematic quality and story that stand out)
5.6. Tie: FF8 and FF9 (two sides of the same coin; a yin and a yang)

The only others I've played are 11, 14, 10-2, and 4. Don't really see any sense in listing them here.

Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

When FFVII came out, I didn't give a ****. I had no love for the franchise or RPGs. RPG's didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. "Why can't I act NOW?!" But to be fair, I didn't even know what the heck an RPG was. I becked out Breath of Fire II thinking it sounded cool and wondered why the heck my characters were just standing about in combat. Flash forward several years later and I watched a commercial for Chrono Cross. The bright colors and beautiful music grabbed a hold of me and bought the game. People are often split on that game, but I loved it. I would be playing it on my PS Vita if I could but the damn thing stopped charging. Battery is most likely dead and I would essentially have to rip the bloody thing apart to replace it. When I visit my sister I'm going to get super bored for chunks of time. Oh sorry, got distracted. Anyway, that game was what got me interested in the genre. Then I played FFIX (one of my favorite RPGs, btw), then FFVIII, FFVII, Chrono Trigger, FFIV, FFVI, Xenogears, FFX, etc. Fell in love with the genre and now i'm trapped in the purgatory known only as the RPG Maker Pavilion. AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

While on the subject of FFs, my favorites are roughly in this order:

10. FFII (I'm probably the only person who likes this game. lol)
9. FF Tactics Advance
8. FF Dissidia Duodecim
7. FFIV
6. FF Tactics
5. FFVII
4. FFX
3. FFVIII
2. FFVI
1. FFIX

Re: PURE FREE SPEECH THREAD

Several hours ago I challenged my friends to a game of wii sports. Going as the Mii version of Donald Trump, I proceeded to beat my friends in all forms of game, including but not limited to: boxing. The Donald never quit. I soon emerged victorious over my fellow (dead) comrades, with the battle only lasting for about 2 hours.

I don't know who Mr. Bicth is but I'm sure he would expect your challenge. Unlike me because my newest Nintendo product is the DS.
