Re: Games Journal: my "new" blog
I never found the Sonic stories in games to be anything more than a simple excuse to have Sonic fight Robotnik or other bad guy, so a dumb story in Sonic Adventure doesn't bother me. Because, yeah, it's dumb, and the voice acting is worse, and the tweeny rock stuff is annoying. But the game itself was a blast."Mindless killing doesn't do a lot for me anymore." - Sampson

The way Sonic 3 and Sonic CD tells their stories is awesome. No voice acting, no cutscenes like we know them today, just good 'ol "sprite acting" a la the Baby Metroid and everything in Super Metroid.Originally posted by Irish Daigle View PostI never found the Sonic stories in games to be anything more than a simple excuse to have Sonic fight Robotnik or other bad guy, so a dumb story in Sonic Adventure doesn't bother me. That doesn't change the fact that the story had nothing of import. It was all "amigash Robotnik's back and *insert character here* is helping him if applicable" and sure it may be told/shown well but it didn't make it some compelling story that you can use in an argument against the stupidity of later Sonic games. Except perhaps to go back to the simpler formula, which isn't what I'm arguing against.Originally posted by SirTMagus View PostThe way Sonic 3 and Sonic CD tells their stories is awesome. And Mora, we all know the camera is bad in pretty much all 3D Sonic games, but I remember being more frustrated about it in Sonic Adventure 2 than Sonic Adventure. =V"Mindless killing doesn't do a lot for me anymore." - Sampson

Re: Games Journal: my "new" blog
Everyone uses "Sonic is about speed, return to speed" but only the first level could you ever PUSH RIGHT TO WIN and the newer Sonic games seem to have forgotten that. Sonic had some of the greatest level design out of any platformer and they were filled with multiple paths, challenging platform segments, and (yes) required patience.
Sonic Adventure began to veer away from the level design that made the games so fun. Sonic's levels are undoubtly the best but then you completely switch gameplay elements with Knuckle's confusing item hunt missions and Big the Cat ****ing fishing. Where are my swinging platforms, physics based puzzles, collapsing floors that lead me to different areas, and hidden rooms??
As for BioWare's Sonic, I loved how they made him an asshole. His dialog lines are basically "Hurry up," "Don't care," and "*Something totally mean and sarcastic*"
