Re: The Official Final Fantasy XIV Topic

Producer tanaka twittered that all the rumors circling about the fatigue system are baseless "wild ideas." looks like that link is false.

I'm kinda ashamed of you pav! Jumping on the first negative thing about the game and hailing it as fact. 1 hour per day? Seriously?

No playonline. It's just login right in the game.

It isn't false, go read the FF14 beta board, it is in an uproar over this mechanic.

As for crafting, let me just quote someone who said it all:
Then there was crafting. A Profession Square Enix swore the players could take up and enjoy within itself without having to depend on a melee/magic/front lines class to enjoy. That if some one simply wanted to craft, then craft they shall. However this was far from the truth. The skill ups even at the low levels were even much slower than that in FFXI and that being at higher levels. The materials needed to make simple crafts to level up your crafting profession were expensive and hard to come by, and lastly there were the crystals. Say goodbye to simply needing one crystal, because now even for the most simply low level synthesis you could need anywhere from 2 of one kind, 3 of another kind and 4 of a final kind to 9 of each kind of crystal, for a single synthesis. One which had about a 20% chance of giving you skill up points, a small amount at that. The crafting "guildleves" gave you free ingredients to craft with but only a few and after about a hour or so you ran out of them and then came to lovely 48 cooldown to obtain more. Things truly were looking bleak for crafters and those wishing to take up the profession.
You can read the whole thing here: http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11702-in-summary/

And according to everyone in beta, they all confirm that this is what is wrong with the game (the above link, though it is long).

They either know something beta players don't, or SE really is making a bad move.

I didn't see any beta players speaking of this until that link. I still think the 'one hour per day' thing is very far off, but the other parts are troubling.

Again, see how it goes in open beta...

Bastard, Den! I was going to be a pugilist, though not an Archer.

Monk/Heals+Glad is probably what I'll be building.

The 1 hour per day thing is not off at all. Straight from a dev's mouth; you've got a total of 8 hours to play a class before you start losing EXP for the rest of the week.

            http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11964...komoto-speaks/

This game is going to get torn to shreds during open beta.
edit: I really would like this game to end up being decent, because it'd be fun to play a MMO with you guys again; but it really sounds like the game is doomed to bomb at this point.

If they want people gimped by not leveling multiple classes, fine. Just get rid of the time limit.

              Open beta starts soon.
When??? PC only??? My PS3 needs love, too.

SO! now that we know all that, we should start picking our classes so no one craft is left out of our group, methinks.
              For me, I'll go...

WAR: Gladiator (was wanting to main this anyway), Marauder, and Lancer.
              LAND: Miner
              HAND: Blacksmith, Armorer

                  http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/11964...komoto-speaks/

                  Summary:

Surplus exp occurs after the first 8 hours of play and dwindles normal exp during the following 7 hours.

Time spent playing but NOT exping will slowly reset the surplus, but the timer resets at the end of each week just in case.

Surplus exp system was present in all betas, but wasn't noticed until beta 3 because of extended play time and developer issues regarding adjustments being made to exp/skill gain. Because of this, beta testers noticed surplus long before the developers intended them to.

Possible uses for surplus exp are being considered.

Adjustments to surplus are also being enacted/considered.
                  ...and that's why.

Re: The Official Final Fantasy XIV Topic

Some blogs/people explained the exp surplus system in a new perspective that makes sense to me:

                      Normal MMO:
                      - Grind your favorite class every day for 4-8 hours a day or more.
                      - Time spent not grinding is time spent not getting EXP.
                      - Keep grinding for months and years until you cap your exp. Now you can enjoy the rest of the game.

                      FFXIV:
                      - Grind your favorite class for 8-15 hours.
                      - Run into surplus exp, go do something else. Try another class, do some quests, craft a bit, or just explore. Enjoy the game while you have time to wait for the exp to return.
                      - Keep grinding/playing for months and years until you cap your exp, along with several other classes/crafts leveled. By the time you've reached the cap you've experienced over half the game.

What bugs me about the uproar over this is that people are arguing for the sake of grinding. But isn't grinding what sucks about MMOs?

Consider it this way: When they designed FFXI, WoW, and all those other MMOs, they intentionally calculated the rate of exp gain for every instance so that no one would be able to reach the end of the game without the company turning a profit. Heck, EVE's character progression is time-BASED.

FFXIV is just going about this another way. It sounds like a big F U to people that are used to grinding for hours, but really it's a "Hey, when you're done doing the repetitive stuff, why not take a look at this."

honestly, its still grinding, but just in a different way. But explaining it more definitely makes it seem interesting, and i'll be playing day one. I think i'm probably gonna go preorder the CE tomorrow.

That's all fine and dandy, but after paying 50 dollars + a 15 dollar a month fee I should be able to do whatever the **** I want.

'Choice' is the illusion of game design, no matter what you play.

Edit: I'll let you guys know how 'bad' it is when I get my copy a week early.

Not really. It's not like they're giving you any choice in the matter, except I suppose to stop playing.

I want to respect the fact that they're trying to discourage grinding, but all the information that I've seen gives the impression that what's really happening here is that they're punishing people who really love the game for the sake of casual players. Maybe the developers will be to handle the system well, but I can understand the community's bad reaction. It just seems like if someone wants to put a bunch of time into their character by grinding out another level, they shouldn't be discouraged from that because some other guy can only afford to play for an hour a day.

I don't know, I don't really have as much free time these days, or as much as I'd like personally.

For example, this weekend I have operational readiness excercise where I'll be pulling 12's each day til' monday.

So honestly, in a selfish way, I'm kind of eased to hear that I can still keep with some of y'all and still not play as much!
