Siliconera RPG Maker VX Ace Project, 1up's thoughts on VX Ace, semi-major pav news.

Siliconera has teamed up with the US PC RPGM team to create a game with the software based on community input. The first poll, concerning the setting of the game, is up now and closes in a week. During the project, they'll be posting a series of tutorials for the software. Interested? Check out the first installment of the project here.

In other VX Ace news, 1up's RPG Blog, "The Grind" recently published their thoughts on the software, which you can read here.

I know it's rare for more than one update to be done in a day here. I used to avoid doing it as often as possible to keep topics from getting buried. That's over. When there's news in the community, or something I think deserves special attention, it will go up. This could lead to several news posts in one day, which honestly isn't a bad thing. People will just need to get used to checking the main forum (now renamed the news forum) or front page more often. I hope the forum name change doesn't bother anyone, as it's been the "main forum" for almost twelve years now, but a change was in order to reflect how active the forum is going to be from now on.

Also, if you haven't followed our twitter account, or liked our facebook page, now's a great time to do so. While they hadn't really been used much at all before, they'll be updated whenever the front page is from now on.

the meat of your nascent game -- "events" in the RPG Maker parlance -- requires some serious knowledge of the series' programming language, otherwise known as "Ruby."
"The Grind" seems to be very misinformed about how to go about creating a game.

The 1UP article almost felt like an apology for sucking at the program ("it's very versatile but you need to be a genius"). The idea that he couldn't create battles or NPCs is hard to get my head around, and the assertion that you need to know Ruby to do make a game with it is absolutely preposterous.

I think it does make one very legitimate complaint, though - some beginner tutorials (like what we got in the RM2 strategy guide with "Blammo's Quest"), as well as a sample game to dissect, would be unbelievably useful for people who come into the program feeling intimidated.

Valk, could you do us a favor and reword the blurb on Siliconera? I got really excited that they were teaming up with the PC team to create a new RPG Maker Program using our suggestions, when in reality they are just making a community-collaboration game USING the VX Ace software. I then went back and read our post again, and still got that impression.

RPG Maker isn't a game though. It's software used to make games. I personally don't see how that's not clear, especially given that it's called "The Siliconera RPG Maker VX Ace Project", and that the first poll has people choosing the setting of the game.

I can throw a couple more words in to make it even more clear though, I guess.

Ah, I've always thought of it as a game used to make other games. And I think of the "setting" of RPG Maker to be its tendency towards certain settings, such as RM3's medieval "setting". I can see how that might sound ridiculous but it's honestly the way I interpreted it! My heart was fluttering in that brief moment between reading the blurb and clicking over to the article. At any rate, I appreciate the edit, I think now no one will interpret it the way I did.

Funny...I'm about 50/50 split between calling the console-based RPG Makers "games" and "software." I still call the PC-based ones "software," however.

That being said, I was able to understand what was being conveyed by this post initially.

I'll have to politely inform you that a sample game for VXAce was released.

Also, the RPG Maker Blog has been posting Tutorials on how to use the program as well.

From the release topic for the sample game(which I posted in that topic as well):

While I think it's wonderful that this kind of stuff is done in an official capacity (and yes I've seen most of it before), it's still a step different from actually packaging a sample game and (ideally interactive) tutorials into the program itself.

The 1Up guy's (admittedly inexplicable) rough experience is a testament to that.

When I clicked that link, I did not understand why Corpse Party was one of the links at the top related to his "review," when the other links were for RPGM software. Read a bit further, and apparently it (Corpse Party) was made with Maker software. Which is odd, as I had no idea, and I had just downloaded it not a week prior.

Edit: Just looked on Wikipedia, and apparently the first game in the series for PC was made using Maker software, not the PSP game.
