Re: Pokemon Discussion Thread (Now Playing Pokemon Platinum)

    New more things:

PC, Pokedex, bag and summary page navigation have been largely relegated to the touch screen.

I'm especially happy about the new PC interface. Before Diamond and Pearl were released, I had expected to be able to drag/tap-and-move Pokemon to, from and around the boxes, so I was a little disappointed when it turned out to be limited to touch screen shortcuts. But now it's all good.

Regarding the Pokemon that follow you around, it turns out it's not limited to the starters; Any of the 493 Pokemon can follow you around.

Oh man... I can finally use the touch screen to navigate more menus? That's the one feature that seals the deal for me.

Here's a better view of things (scan too big to post here).

        These are fine, though:

Re: Pokemon Discussion Thread (Now Playing Pokemon Platinum)

Hey RPGDesigner, are you pretty knowledgeable in competitive battling? Or anyone else?

My best friend, whose been my best friend since Red and Blue came out, and I are both making a team of 6 in secrecy and are going to duke it out to see who is the superior battler (he beat me to collecting 493, so it can be said he's better than me at collecting).

I was wondering if you'd rate my team and/or give me some suggestions. We both are using poke'mon that are in the UU/BL/OU tiers, no Ubers, and we are allowed to use one non-uber legendary.

He's slipped up a few times and revealed to me a couple guys in his party. He said he caught his legendary in Emerald, and since we aren't allowed to use Latios/Latias, I figure it has to be one of the Regis. Also, he mentioned a poke'mon he bred that only knew Growl at Lvl. 1, and whose final form only had one ability. I couldnt resist and looked up said poke'mon to discover it's Gallade, which can be a reckonable force if I mess up and let him set-up. Also, when I was with him he accidentally turned the sound up at a wrong time trying to show me that his poke'mon was evolving, but he accidentally released the call of the poke'mon which sounded a lot like a Clefable.

This is my team made-up of most of my favorite poke'mon

                  Umbreon @ Leftovers
                  Ability: Synchronize
                  Nature: Bold
                  EVs: 252 HP, 128 Def, 128 SDef

                  Yawn
                  Substitute
                  Mean Look
                  Baton Pass

This was going to originally be my lead until I discovered that due to Umbreons' poor speed, he could easily be outsped and set-up on, especially with the aid of Taunt. I figure Synchronize will make him think twice before using a status effect.

My plan is to either Yawn or Sub first turn, depending on what I'm facing. If I Yawn, this might force him to switch, allowing me to trap whatever comes in with Mean Look, allowing a safe switch-in. If the poke'mon coming in isn't a Fighting/Bug poke'mon, then I'd preceed to Yawn, and try to BP my Sub to one of my Sweepers to help them set-up.

This set is difficult to pull off due to his poor speed, but Umbreon is very bulky and can take a hit well. I realize there may be superior BPs, Sub Supporters, and Trappers, but Umbreon has been one of my favorite poke'mon since I used him to beat Poke'mon Stadium 2. Also, the purpose of this fight between me and my friend is to use our favorite poke'mon, not just what works.

                  Scizor @ Life Orb
                  Ability: Technician
                  Nature: Adamant
                  EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP

                  Swords Dance
                  Bullet Punch
                  X-Scissor
                  Brick Break

This is a standard Scizor, which apparently runs rampant all across the OU metagame. I've always used Scizor as a Baton Passer in the past, so I figured I wanted to try him out as a physical sweeper. Fortunately for me, I hear that Scizor with Bullet Punch is a beast. With subsupport I can safely Swords Dance, giving a +2 Atk STAB Technician Life Orb First Priority Bullet Punch to throw out.

                  Kingdra @ Leftovers
                  Ability: Sniper
                  Nature: Adamant
                  EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 HP

                  Waterfall
                  Outrage
                  Dragon Dance
                  Substitute

This is my other physical sweeper. I've never really used a Kingdra before so I look foward to it. I chose it for it's superior defensive typing, hoping to intimidate my friend into switching out giving me a free Dragon Dance. I chose Sniper just because it looks beautiful and I also dont like the idea of relying on Rain Dance for speed.

                  Ninetales @ Wide Lens
                  Ability: Flash Fire
                  Nature: Timid
                  EVs: 252 SAtk, 252 Spe, 4 SDef

                  Fire Blast
                  Energy Ball
                  Hypnosis
                  Nasty Plot

This is my odd man out, and in perspective may be my teams' weakest link. Nevertheless, Ninetales is my favorite poke'mon, and has been for generations past. I was fortunate to breed this Vulpix with a 31 IV in speed so I have the max 328 Speed for this guy. I will generally outspeed most pokes, allowing me to Hypnosis and begin to set-up the Nasty Plots. Fire Blast over Flamethrower for more added power, Energy Ball for the Water/Rock/Grounds. I figure this could help me counter one of his Regis. The biggest problem I have with this Ninetales so far is that she can't afford to miss. I received pretty average - below average IVs in Def and HP. How I utilize this poke'mon is heavily reliant on the RNG gods, although I try to remedy this with Wide Lens.

                  Zapdos @ Leftovers
                  Ability: Pressure
                  Nature: Bold
                  EVs: Undecided

                  Thunderbolt
                  Heat Wave / Thunder Wave
                  Roost
                  Roar

This is my legendary. I remember how excited I was when I was 7 running into this in the Power Plant. I usually had a straightfoward Thunderbolt/Drill Peck/Thunder Wave/Whirlwind build for him, but now I want to try something a little bit different.

The roar is there for if I let the opponent take a free turn to set-up, effectively preventing a potential sweep. Roost for recovery, Thunderbolt for a heavy STAB. The only conflict the lies is between rather I should take up another offensive move for more coverage and a chance of a burn, hindering Physical Sweepers, or Thunder Wave, for added support considering my team is rather on the slow side.

                  Brongzong @ Macho Brace
                  Ability: Fireproof
                  Nature: Sassy
                  EVs: 252 HP, 128 Def, 128 SDef

                  Explosion
                  Stealth Rock
                  Hypnosis
                  Trick

This is my utility/support poke'mon. I can Trick off the Macho Brace, effectively cutting my opponents speed in half. Stealth Rock and Hypnosis for more support. Explosion is for when his job is done.

Other poke'mon I've been considering putting in my team are Milotic, Yanmega, SubSeed Breloom, and an Empoleon.

Gee, it's been a while since I dabbled in competitive battling, but I'd be more than happy to help you out. I'll give your team a good once-over and get back to you.

Coincidentally, my team shares three of your teammates.

Yes I've noticed. You have a good taste in poke'mon sir.

Also I'd post this on Serebii, but their forums rules state that you can only post teams for competitive purposes only, not for battles against friends. Also I've seen how they are there.. they take competitive battling way too seriously. They might even go as far as questioning my potential for becoming a poke'mon master.. and my heart just cant take that

I've been moving, so I haven't had any time to play anything. Once things settle down, I'll get back into the swing of things.

And also give that long-overdue advice.
