Something like that is used to ensure that the only people that see the actual game are the ones that pay. I can't think of any other reason, since gory games are usually a staple of most arcades.
I'm with Marcman, what's the big deal? Yeah, you'll have to wait longer for a console game but the series peaked at SH2 for me. I still haven't played The Room though. It just sits on its shelf and lords it's hidden wonders at me.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.
I liked playing it the FIRST time. Recent playthroughs are still kinda fun, because I can beat up on ol' Gimpy and she has to sit there and take it. I also wish they had the rusty axe in other silent hill games... SH has a hachet, but it's pretty weak.
I just think that this is the complete opposite of the basic aesthetic of SH. Frankly, for one thing, SH was much more about the melee weapons, at least for me. But even moreso, I'd argue that combat is really secondary to puzzle solving and general atmosphere. SH isn't about gunning everything down.

Honestly, the game kind of lost its charm for me after 5-10 minutes. What startled me at first just became plain annoying.... ghosts can't ****ing die! If it wasn't for the three actual monsters, weapons would be completely pointless. For the most part they didn't really have the puzzles that the series is known for, only one boss in the 10 hours of playing it, babysitting for half of the game, annoying ****ing Sullivan! Though, I will give credit where credit is due, stuff in the apartment can get pretty creepy. I kind of wish everything else in that game was somewhat like that.
I give SH4 the credit of putting the survival back in survival horror. But things in the game were unnecessarily frustrating. I recall the director admitting he wishes he'd had some time to tweak certain things in the game, like lengthening the amount of time ghosts are stunned so you can stake 'em and stuff like that. Honestly, it's the mechanics and general unfairness of the game in the second half that **** me off. Also the way they piddled away possible the best premise the series ever had.

Indeed one of the biggest disapointments. It could have been an awesome game. I enjoyed the premise of the game, but hated how it all fell short. And God, do I wish the ghosts stayed stunned longer. You don't always have a sword thing to stick them with, so it would be nice to have some time to get away before they get up.
The ghosts were annoying, but you could pin the really awful ones forever if you bludgeoned them enough beforehand.
SH4 gave off this really unsettling vibe that I liked. I thought the levels and the music were good, but the monsters and sound effects were sub-par. I know the ghosts were supposed to sorta replace the normal level bosses, but it didn't work. It got less and less enjoyable towards the end, although I thought the last boss was great.
