    Final Fantasy: Crisis Core mini-review

I managed to pick up a copy of crisis core (japanese version) from a local store. I just wanted to tell you guys what I think.

Anyways... it's pretty friggin awesome. Definitely the best FF spinoff that Square has made. Keep in mind that I'm basing this off the gameplay as I can't understand the story so this only makes things better.

For those that don't know, the game tells the story of Zack; one of the more important characters from FF7 who only got a minor role (he was Cloud's war buddy, test tube buddy, and "inherited all your memories" buddy). The story revolves around his experiences in Soldier, the rise of Shinra, the missions in Nifleheim or whatever that town was called, and of course the mental decline of the legendary SOLDIER Sephiroth. T

There's a lot of fanservice (in terms of characters, not nudity). There's even a one winged angel who looks a helluva lot like Vincent before meeting Hojo and it's weird because you see him pull out his wing during a cinema. I think Hojo is in the game as well (there's someone who sort of looks like him) and Cloud's appearance is pretty integral to the story too. A really young Yuffie makes an appearance and there's even a character that I'm beginning to think is the human version of Jenova.

There's a lot of changes added to the story. I can't understand them, but they'll make english fans go nuts. There's a huge connection between Zack and a young Aerith as well as the Turks (turns out Aerith, Zack, and Tseng are all buddies or something). The game has a main story arc, but if you don't want to follow it you can do some hundreds of side missions that are offered to you by SOLDIER. These side missions offer equipment and materia that aren't present in the main story arc and some of them have storylines of their own that aren't important but help flesh out Final Fantasy 7s world.

The battle system is pretty cool. It's basically like Star Ocean in that you can freely run around a circular map and you can attack or use skill combos freely. Materia returns which you can equip to cast spells but there's some new additions. Materia levels up like in the previous game but newer materia is combined to increase spell power (so two fires gives you Fira and two firas give you Firaga and so forth). You can also add neat effects such as combining Yellow + Green materia which gives you a deathblow attack that heals you.

In addition, there's this little slot machine thing in the corner that acts as your limit break. Depending on several factors (probably damage taken or something) the slot machine will stop on random icons and you can activate your limit break. If you get a specific row, you'll do a special powerful attack. In one of the breaks I did, I called on Tseng who rides in on a helicopter and shoots at the enemies. Red materia makes a return, but only adds to the limit breaks you can do. There are still familiar summons like Ifrit and Shiva as well as some new ones I haven't seen before.

The graphics are gorgeous. Definitely dreamcast quality and the FMVs are well animated and directed yet there aren't so many of them that they interupt the gameplay during hectic times. The cinematic approach from FF7 is here although I miss the original game's quirkiness (come on... cloud takes a bath with a group of gay guys!). The music, done by the same guy who did Vagrant Story and FFX, is excellent as well.

Overall, this is a good game to keep your eyes open for. It seems to modify a lot from the FF7 story like adding new characters. There's some old faces like Vincent and Hojo and new guys (like this dude in a red Jacket who seems to be the main enemy) but the original story is never contradicted.

    Screenshots
    yeah.

Hasn't this always been the case? I don't understand what's changed about this.

Because in FF7, Zack is never seen or mentioned with Aerith, the Turks want to beat up Aerith, Tseng never even addresses her or mentions Zack, and in Advent Children we simply see Zack and Aerith walk out of the church together.

Yeah, this is pretty new to me.

            Seriously.

Anyway, the way you describe it sounds fairly enticing. The side missions especially, they should make for nice portable play. I just hope they tighten up the graphics and finish level 3 before it comes stateside. And I'd like some nice English dub actors k plz hire crispin freeman thx.

And Crisis Core can't HELP but be the best FF7 spin-off.

Funny, I was going to cite Advent Children as being obvious evidence for MY argument.

How is anyone supposed to know this when they don't even talk about each other and the only clues given was Zack appearing in the church in Advent Children for 30 seconds.

I think you mean Tifa was Zack's boyfriend considering all the memories Cloud shared as a child were Zacks.

The graphics are pretty much the best on any handheld by a long mile. As far as voice acting goes, the entire cast from Advent Children plays their characters and according to Wikipedia, most of the voice actors from the English Advent Children will play their respective characters...

...uh, hopefully there'll be a japanese voice with english subtitles option!

She talks about how he was her boyfriend shortly after she joins the party, when you're at some playground in the slums. It's definitely not subtle at all.

Yeah, not to mention that when you go to the ruined reactor town after getting the buggy, where Zack is from, Aeris and Tifa are both affected by it.

The translation was not so bad that you couldn't pick up on these kinds of things.

Yeah, maybe you should play FF7 again.
And it wouldn't hurt to actually pay attention this time.

Yeah, it's common knowledge that Zack was Aeris's boyfriend. The original game didn't go into much detial, but it's mentioned multiple times in the story, including the 2 beforementioned times.

The real question is, is there any idea when the US will get to see Crisis Core?

                            Sorry, I haven't played FF7 in 10 years.

Crisis Core comes out in the US either December of this year or early next year.

                            A couple of random things:

-There's a shop in the menu where you can buy things sort of like making items in Valkyrie Profile. However, the game is actually pretty difficult considering you only get one party member (Zack). In the first 10 minutes you have to fight about 30 Shinra soldiers and the first boss is Behemoth. It's not so hard that it's frustrating but the challenge is decent.

-Cloud still wears his purple jumpsuit. yay.

-The game reveals everything about the one-winged angels... too bad I can't understand it.

-The game also tells the story behind the original owner of the Buster Sword and why Sephiroth was destroyed by Omnislash (besides being a powerful move).

                            -Cait Sith returns... ugh

-The beginning is pure fanservice. It's pretty much the attack on the reactor complete with the remixed intro music and almost identical camera angles and everything.

-The game's more action oriented than previous FF games considering the new battle system. You still run around and explore areas, but there's a good deal of combat and customization over Zack.

Uh... if anyone has any questions, I'll gladly try to answer them. Just don't ask any story questions because all I understand is that Sephiroth is looking for this guy called Genesis who's an angel or something and this is Zack's initiation trial.

                              This topic is fun.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.
