What books should you read before you die?

Gimmie some. I read when I'm doing my cardio on the stationary bike. I'll give you my picks but I'm busy and I have to hit lunch in half an hour.

Give me a day or so and I will compile a list.

Well, my personal list includes Ender's Game, The Martian Chronicles, Dandelion Wine and the other Bradbury books, Lolita, The Once and Future King, the Sherlock Holmes books AND the James Bond books, maybe the Narnia books I never finished, 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Lord of the Flies, and the Bible.

Oh, and The Joy of Cooking.

If you've not read it already, I recommend The Lost World by Michael Crichton.

            Hmm....
            • Livy's Early History of Rome
            • Tacitus's Annals of Imperial Rome
            • Machiavelli's The Prince
            • Machiavelli's Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy (helps to have read Livy before you read this, though)
            • Nietzche's Beyond Good and Evil
            • Virgil's The Aeneid
            • Homer's The Illiad
            • Homer's The Odyssey
            • Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War
            • Richard Adams' Watership Down

Most of this isn't the easiest reading, but most are the bedrocks of our civilization.

Bible or whatever your religous documents are. I should read it at least once before I die.

Dan Rather had a list of books he said everyone needs to have read before they can call themselves educated. I don't know what they are but I've always been curious.

Can go wrong with Dan Rather.

Don't really know about having to read before you die, but I'll throw these out there:

Dante's Inferno translated by Mark Musa.

Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis

The Catcher in The Rye by J.D. Salinger

Blood Meridian or The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Blood Meridian is called one of the great American novels, but I personally prefer The Road, mainly because it's a little less bleak(not by much) and has more of a heart, and I have a thing for post apocalyptic writing.

Blindness by Jose Saramago, it won a Nobel Prize.

The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner

A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

                  Non-Fiction:
The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli EDIT: Didn't notice patryn already listed this. I'd also add Thus Spake Zarathustra by Nietzsche and something by Robert Greene

Less Than Zero was painful to read. A good book, but so depressing it hurts.

I Am Legend was disapointing. BECAUSE IT JUST FREAKING ENDS!!!

                      THAT'S KIND OF THE POINT.

                      Post Office by Charles Bukowski.

I second much of what Garr said, especially the McCarthy.

                          Also,

There's one I like, Ishmael, by Daniel Quin. The publisher was Bantam Books (or something....).
