Anderson ****ing Cooper must have a buzzer or something that tells him when disaster strikes because he's the first guy on scene in any natural disaster.

Let me pose a question: whenever an event like this occurs and someone tells you about it and makes a big deal about feeling bad for these people--do you believe them, or do you think their empathy is feigned?

Maybe I'm just a heartless asshole, but I'm not personally effected by this disaster at all and I really don't care. Yeah it sucks, and yeah I'm going to donate a few dollars, but I feel no emotional sorrow whatsoever. I'm not from Haiti, I've never been there, didn't know anyone from there, etc. If this earthquake had happened here, I wouldn't expect anyone from Haiti to feel bad for me.

I gave monies to the tsunami, didn't more people die then?

Plus, you can pick your tragedy to donate to. I prefer malaria nets cuz they're shown to save lives and are in need of them, so my effort doesn't feel wasted.

As for how I feel, I'm not really that torn up...unlike the Haitians, heyooooooooooooooooooo

To answer your question, yeah, I do think tons of empathy is feigned when stuff like this happens. But if you go around acting like your chipper self, you get accused of being heartless. What gives?!

Some of the pics are pretty disturbing. Like, almost as disturbing as the pics of Israel's steamroll through Gaza or the birth defects caused by depleted uranium. This one picture I saw on 4chan (that I'm kicking myself for not saving because I have yet to find it anywhere else) showed a dude literally walking on top of like 100 bodies piled up. They were all bloated from spending a day in the hot sun with tattered clothes and refuse and blood everywhere. Imagine seeing one of the WWII mass grave pictures but in color.

A few surveillance videos show the beginning of the earthquake. One shows a serene little road and suddenly **** starts violently shaking with cars veering off the road and people running around like crazy. Google released updated satellite photos showing the wreckage. Pretty much 70% of the city was completely and utterly leveled. Every single street was littered with debris and you can spot certain areas like the soccer arena where people have set up makeshift camps.

Yeah, our little monkey brains make it all but impossible to really emphathize for complete strangers. So the empathy is oftentimes feigned, but that doesn't mean it's bad to do so. Feigned empathy is really saying, "I can't make myself honestly care for a complete stranger, but I can at least show that I understand that I should care."
