so my new computer is ****ed by a virus

i guess the internet is a dangerous place lately.

i just got a new computer and already its screwed. it seems i have some kind of virus that blocks search engines, dumps popups leading to more viruses and so far mcaffee cant detect it. it likes to download a trojan called vundo, but mcaffee catches it and a safemode scan cleaned up all traces of it.

my labtop is facing similar issues, but i think the harddrive is dying. can anyone give me a suggestion to fix this problem, im burnt out.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

For the harddrive ar death: Get a new Harddrive, try to back up your files on an external

For your virus thing: Get somthing other than Mcafee, or just reformat.

I have Avast Anti-Virus and Ad-Aware for the SpyWare. Avast! is pretty solid, there are probably some better anti-spyware programs out there, though.

        Also:

Try using Windows Security Options and a Reg Cleaner. I'd recommend "CCleaner".

I've had some nasty viruses in the past, and most of the time I've been able to get rid of them Problem is they deeply imbed themselves in your computer, so it takes a lot of effort on your part to remove it. Even if you do remove it, you aren't totally guaranteed you'll have gotten rid of it all. Only a few months back I got a virus that did irreversible damage to my computer. =/

Run the following programs, in this order, and all should be well. It's the first thing I do on a computer service call (don't spread this advice, I still need business):

          1.) Smitfraudfix
          http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php

          2.) Combofix
          http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

3.) Uninstall your current Antivirus and install AVG Free.
          http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

4.) After you install that, install and run Super Antispyware.
          http://www.superantispyware.com/supe...freevspro.html

5.) Uninstall Super Antispyware after you scan your drive. You don't need it anymore.

6.) Install, udpate, and run Spybot.
          http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

7.) After the virus is gone, run a system file check. Insert your Windows CD. If you don't have one, download one. Open a command window (Start > Run > Type "CMD" press enter) and in the command line type the following command without the quotes: "sfc /scannow".

The virus *should* be gone by then. If not, let me know. Some viruses destroy the windows system files when you try to remove it. If that happens, do this (do the section that says repair install, but still read everything):
          http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

For the hard drive problems, download this and burn the ISO image to a CD-Rom:
          http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Find out what brand of hard drive it is (Seagate, Western Digital, etc) and boot with that CD. Go into the hard drive diagnostic section (I think that's what it's called) and run the manufacturers tools that are made for your brand of hard drive. If there are several versions of the diagnostic on the CD, choose the highest version. Make sure you do a full scan and see if it reports bad sectors. If it does, you will need to RMA the drive. If not, it too could be a virus causing your problems.

You too should try the system file check. Open a command window and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes while your Windows CD is in the drive. It takes about an hour. It's worth it though. There is no such thing as irreversible damage when it comes to computers unless a hardware device blows, then again, whatever goes bad can be replaced.

Yeah, I have Ad-Aware and it seems to be doing it's job. I have Symantec Antivirus for the tough stuff, i haven't had any problems since I installed it, so I think it works great.

wee, it looks like it got rid of the trojan (vundo like i suspected) and cleaned up the other crap that was preventing it from taking a hike. the next step will be to go through the steps on my labtop.

thanks a lot jlacroix, this has saved me a reformat, aggravation, and a lot of time pulling out my hair.

some of these virus' are really tough to axe. some people have too much time on their hands coding this crap. really, why do people even make virus/trojans?

for now on im gona surf protected.

must be an effect of the internet, inverting letters, changing spelling, and talking in l33t.

bah, its more like craptop anyway.

Several types of people make viruses. Teenagers that have nothing better to do, anti Microsoft zealots, and even antivirus companies that try to cash in on your suffering.

You should consider Acronis True Image. It's an amazing program to have. Mine has saved my ass several times. It's basically a hard drive imager. It slows the computer down to a crawl, so I configured it to never run, but I use it to make images of my hard drive every now and then so if something bad happens I'm covered.
