I'll leave it to the RPG Maker 2 pros to answer the difficulty questions for you, but can you make a simple game on RPG Maker 3, then, if you're up for more of a challenge, buy RPG Maker 2 later? I would recommend having both of them at least to be able to play games that others have made or will make.

As far as your PS2 problem, have you tried googling "PS2 dre fix." That may lead you in some helpful directions. I tried all of the fixes and nothing worked for me, but I hope you may have success. I had to end up getting a slim PS2.

    Anyway, happy New Year, bro.

You're gonna have to code no matter what.

You can't just drag and drop and have a creative game pop out.

It's not too difficult once you get the hang of it.

RPG Maker 3 is, thus far, the easiest medium to make RPGs, but also--unfortunately--the most limited. RPG Maker 2 is probably the most difficult software to use, but you can do tons more with it. With that being said, RPG Maker 1 is the inbetween.

I would say--start with RPG Maker 3 first if you don't mind making a medieval fantasy story first. But if you're willing to go the distance with RPG Maker 2, then you've got plenty of people here to help you with that.

You've got thetruecoolness and Rodak (where IS that guy?!) who can definately help you with 2, of course. And there are plenty of members who've done wonderful things with RPG Maker 2--some projects aren't even RPGs at all!

Re: should i stick with rpg maker 3 and make a game or get this

All I can say is good luck with that, maybe you should try setting your sights a little lower starting out and do some simple things, then work your way up to a true action game. RPGs are by nature not action oriented (they are for the most part turn based), so that means you have to kind of trick these RPG Makers into making things like that. Trust me when I tell you no one is going to do this for you. They won't. But if you ask specific questions after showing you have put forth the effort to try to learn something we're more than happy to get you that one functions, variable or flag you need to complete what you've been working on. Don't forget other people are making games too, and making games takes tons of time and effort, so most of us don't have time to help make someone else's game for them too.

If you want all the action stuff you're talking about I would get 2, but realize that you are far away from that point. It took the community as a whole a few years to come up with action systems (Doyleman and Nash having the better ones on RPG Maker 2). You might could do it with 3, not having played any of the games on it and not having 3 I wouldn't know.

So you're going to have to learn these things, with 2 the most important thing you can learn is how to make an action script, as you will be using these exclusively for your 'simulators' you want. Action scripts can run concurrently (at the same time) and so therefore you can have multiple enemies with their own AI running around and shooting and checking for collisions and such. This however will take a lot of planning and time and really understanding how the script commands are working in the background to pull off. And no one will want to just come up with this code and give it to you, because it's hard for anyone and would be very time consuming, and like I said they would rather be working on their games.

My suggestion, get both if you have the money, then play with each one for a week and see which one you like better, then start coming up with specific implementation questions, like what does this command do, or how do you make a player move 4 steps, not can someone please write my game for me.

As for which combat system, many people will like your game better if you put some effort into at least changing some of the default battle system, because all of them are boring. Plus it will make your game stand out, however you must realize there are no custom battle systems people just give away, because they put a lot of effort into them and want their game to still stand out. So many aren't just going to hand it over to some complete stranger, they want then to have to work for their system as well, like they did to make theirs. It would be nice if these games encouraged more team development, but they don't so most of these are singular efforts and your game will be no exception.

So if you need help with something specific we're here for you, but we're not going to just code half or even a quarter of your game for you.

Re: should i stick with rpg maker 3 and make a game or get this

Just keep at it, you'll eventually get how to do these things. We all started out sucking at these games. I've been working on and off with RPG Maker 2 for almost 2 years now, and there are still things I'm finding out about it, and I still have trouble getting it to do some of the things I want.

So don't give up, but in order to get help it's really helpful to us if you give us a specific element you want to get or a specific command you're having trouble with. If you search through the boards I'm sure you'll find some topics about making an ACBS (active custom battle system).

So if this something you really want to do, keep at it, and keep trying to get better, and if you get really stuck come here. But don't just come here first before trying it yourself.

And like I said these games aren't really made to be worked on as a team, as I'm sure Misty can tell you. If you want that you might want to look into RPG Maker XP, since it is more condusive to having a team since multiple people can work on it at the same time, unlike the console RPG Makers.

Also about teams, they don't always make you work faster. Teams are actually less efficient than working alone most of the time (not meaning how fast it gets done but the work to people ratio). So teams aren't always the best way to go. But you can do what a lot of people do, they work on their game for a while, then stop for a bit to regain the motivation to work on it again, and also this allows you to have different experiences to add to the game and create new ideas.

So while you may find people willing to work on a team here, it's very rare.

Re: should i stick with rpg maker 3 and make a game or get this

Actually RPG Maker 3 is the most used at the moment to my knowledge. More games are coming out for that from the community than for the older ones. Trust me the people that do make the games do not make 1 minute long games. Sometimes you wish they did (only on a few) but they put a lot of effort into their games even if their not quite as great as others.

And yeah it can get boring, but anything does. Like the saying goes, anything in life worth doing is hard. And that is generally true, since you normally don't get lasting satisfaction from doing simple things. So it's going to have boring periods but just think of the end product as your motivation to keep going on a game. We all get bored at some point in the game making process but you just get over it and keep going if making games is what you really enjoy.

Re: should i stick with rpg maker 3 and make a game or get this

Ok, I'm going to try to say this nicely, so if it comes off a bit offensive I apologize. To me it sounds like you don't really want to do the work. A lot of people think that they come up with the greatest ideas for video games ever, but then when it comes time to actually make the game they are no where to be found. Even with a team it's going to require a lot of work, and even more to keep all the things consistent since you will have to pass a save file back and forth between each other all the time and hope you don't erase anything already done.

So quite a few people makes games on here, and they're able to do it by themselves so it's not impossible. The coding isn't too hard to understand, and there are tons of resources here on the forum to get you started if you search for them.

But making a game is hard work and it does get boring. You don't just come up with the idea, hit a few buttons and a game pops out a day later. There are toolkits like these that make making a game easier, but there is still a lot involved in making a game. Also if you get on a team and someone feels you aren't doing enough work or vice versa the team will dissolve and you'll be back to square one.

So just keep at it, read through the topics on the forums, and try some things out on your own, then if you're still stuck you can ask for help.

If you really want a team there are tons of opensource projects out there you can try to join up on, and a huge MOD scene encompassing almost any PC game you can name. You just have to seek them out. RPG Maker isn't the only game development framework out there, and probably isn't even the best or easiest.

So when life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and if you can't do that suck it up and just have the lemons, it's better than nothing. Even with a team you'll still have to learn the coding to understand what they're doing so you can work off of it. Yeah you won't have to learn as much but you'll still need to learn some of it.

Bottom line, if you want a team, come up with a game idea and make a post about forming a team in the RPG Maker general idea, and spell out what you are going to do and what you need other people for. Like I said it's unlikely that you'll get a team but it's possible, and much more likely if you go about it professionally instead of just saying I want to work on an unnamed project on a team and I have no references.

I can't tell you how many times I've reiterated this to new people. First come up with a game and make some kind of demo of it, then look for people who are interested on working on it. And please spell out what you plan to work on and what you are looking for others to work on. By spell out I mean at least a page explaining what duties everyone will have. This is going to take up at least half a year of someones life, so I think they want to have some assurance it's going to be worth it. Remember you're advertising yourself and your game to try to get people interested in working on it. This isn't something someone will spend an hour on once a week or something, this is a major undertaking, people want to know what they're getting into, not just hey I'm looking for a team.

So don't get mad at this advice, it's meant to give you a more realistic expectation of what you need to do. I personally am not interested in working on a team as I have enough other side projects I work on from programming to website design to working on my game.

So don't get discouraged so easily either, just realize it's going to be hard to learn, but it will be worth it in the end when you complete your game.

Also please stop double posting, there is an edit button.
