Yeah, the characters are defeniatly memorable, and colorful. And we all agree that the music owns. If you really wanna tear the game apart, you can say that it's a big jumbled mess. Un-focused, and messy. You can do that to really every game out there.
But it's still a great game, and very memorable.
I often find myself to be defending this game, alongside Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy 9 and games of that nature. That people think are "over-rated". Videogame snobs turn their nose up at it and pick apart every little flaw, while I absolutely love them. But whatever, you can't win everyone over.

...People didn't like the battle system? I personally thought it had the best battle system since Chrono Trigger. It was much fun putting together my own combos for personal amusement.
OK, I don't hate Xenogears. FYI, I like it very much. The graphics, the battle system, the core Fei + Elly story, the character design, badass giant robot design this side of Eva and Gundam, thrilling and memorable boss encounters, especially the soundtrack - that's all good. It's an experience and an incredible memorable one. I played this game around the same time I watched Evangelion dubbed on VHS (in the "before time") so you can rest assured this game has left its mark on me.
But I always gotta point out its glaring, lazy design/plot flaws and its RIDICULOUSNESS if just to knock it off its impossibly high pedestal most fans rest it on. It's seriously as if you guys are completely blind to the tapdancing brontosaurus in the corner of the room.
And complaining is fun. So much fun. I don't lazily accept whatever mediocre poop falls in my lap. If I did that I'd watch MTV or attend Out of the Blue screenings. I complain so that hopefully the next product improves. But Xenosaga/Xeno series producer/director/writer Tetsuya Takahashi is a ****ing dumb deaf-mute apparently.
edit: Oh, and Big Lebowski is an amazing cinematic triumph.
Well I agree, that too many people put this game up on the pedestal. Does it belong there? Well, it has a lot of redeeming features. Just don't give it TOO much respect.
Oh, and about Metal Gear Solid 3? The only flaw in that game was the camera angle. Oh, and most of the bossses were to easy. But that didn't hurt the game at all, did it?
You can say the same thing about ANYTHING people like. Tear apart FF7, tear apart Chrono Trigger, tear apart CITIZEN KANE if you WANT TO.
I just think it's better to think about all the reasons its great instead of complaining about the reasons it's not PERFECT.
If any of you ever create art of any kind whether it be music, painting, cartoons, drawing, writing or BIRDHOUSE MAKING you have to realize that as hard as you try there are going to be MASSIVE faults in anything you do.
Humans are largely imperfect and try as we might it's pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to create anything without fault.
That's why the constant *****ing and moaning gets rather tedious, CHA?
