    Oblivion System Specs Roll-Call

I've been getting mixed performance from Oblivion, and I was wondering what your experiences performance-wise is with Oblivion so I can gauge where mine should be.

Basically I want to know what resolution you run it at, what framerate you get, and what hardware you have. I also want to know any tricks/mods/tweaks you may have done to achieve that performance so I know what I should shoot for.

    Here is my system:

Processor: AMD Athlon X2 5200+ (2.6ghz dual core)
    2GB 800mhz dual channel RAM
    Geforce 8600GT Video card, 256MB
    160GB SATA II Hard Drive

    My performance:

At 1024x768 it runs pretty flawlessly. My monitor supports a native resolution of 1280x1024, and if I run it at the native resolution, it's a bit jerky. My preference is 1280x1024. At 1024x768 I get around 60-70FPS, and if I run it at 1280x1024 I get 40-62FPS. I am not using any mods, and I tried every tweak I can think of and it doesn't help. At the native resolution, it's very playable but when walking forward it stutters. I am trying to get it to not stutter at 1280x1024.

I am upgrading to SLI in May or June, possibly sooner, so perhaps that's the only way I can achieve what I want.

How are you guys that play Oblivion performing?

I should've said PC, but I thought that went without saying.

Well, if you do want the absolute best performance out of the game, and dont care about mods or add-ons aside from shivering isles and knights of the nine, then the PS3 is the way to go.

I'll get a PS3, but I'm going to stick with the PC version of Oblivion, because I try to squeeze the most performance out of my PC as I can, and Oblivion is the best benchmark I can find. Besides, I do like mods.

Besides, I can't imagine playing this game with a controller...

I really prefer a controller. the menus navigate faster, and the conversations are quicker too. you don't have to move the mouse pointer over to the options, and you don't have to click the X to end the conversation.

controller for picking locks is much better than a mouse too, not to mention faster.

when I had a friend's copy of oblivion installed on my PC, I played it using the PS3's controller after about two hours of mouse and keyboard.

Isn't Crysis a more punishing benchmark?

Your PC overheating? Could be the problem.

With the exception of the Wiimote and James Bond games (go figure) I can't stand FPS controls with a controller.

Oblivion problem: I'm doing Bruma's Mage Guild Quest, but when I talk to the guy that says he's going to make his friend visible again... nothing happens.

It's possible to do it yourself, if you have:

                      *** SPOILERS ***
                      Dispel.
                      *** END SPOILERS ***

Anyway, We used to have the graphics settings on high, but now the power cuts out after a while, so we turned it down to medium. I don't know the exact specs... but we have an Alienware.

Detect Life? Or just walk around in his room until you bum into him.

I'm too used to the PC controls to turn back now. Even if, Oblivion will always look a bit better on my LCD screen, rather than my extremely retarded old TV.

I wouldn't know. I usually stay as far away from first person shooters as I can, with the exception of Doom, Quake.

Edit: Now I'm curious. I'm going to download the demo and see if it will even run.

Edit 2: The download of the demo is taking too long. Forget that.

Are the requirements really that different than Oblivion?

Nope. I have the cooling system set up REALLY good in this PC. The CPU runs at around 87F, and under load it caps out at 100F. This is with CPU throttling turned off. I have six fans and a high end 600watt power supply.

yes. as in, there isnt a machine on earth that can max Crysis yet and get a great frame rate. It was an intentional design decision, to ensure that as hardware kept improving, Crysis would keep looking better.

                              Just look at this: http://kotaku.com/gaming/craziness/1...sis-333598.php

for that reason, I think Crysis is a terrible benchmark for computer upgrades, because you can't get perfect performance out of it with existing technology. Oblivion is much better, as you CAN get it to run damn near perfectly, aside from the stutters that are an effect of the way the game loads new areas, and cannot be fixed.

...But I can't see this guy, so how do I know where to go to dispel him?
You can see invisible people. there's distortion where they walk. think about MGS1 and how you could still see Otacon when he had his stealth camo on.
