FFXI actually had a decent storyline to it, but it was a royal pain to get to it. Myself, I'm torn between 4, 5 and 6. I wasn't really big into RPG's until I played 4 (or 2 as it was back then), and I've been hooked ever since. FF6 was simply one of the best games the SNES had to offer. I liked the versatility of the job system in 5, as well as the story.
I agree with Mora. The writing in FFXII was really good. The voice acting made it better.
I thought both were just as generic as anything else. Of course you're all focusing on the wrong thing about FFXII. I don't give a crap about it's story. I think it sucked but I can see how Mora would like to marry it. It's soooo Mora. Anyways the best thing about FFXII is its awesome battle system.
Unless you're Highwind.
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.
I voted for the original Final Fantasy. That's the only one I've solved, and until 2 years ago, the only one I had ever played. I like XII, but have not solved it yet. So there's my vote.
