Re: Monster Rancher DS (GAME OBTAINED!)

And yes, I've drawn penises. Several times. They consistently give you certain types of Abisu if you draw them vertically, though some more elaborate wangs give me locked monsters.
    Heheheee...

What happens if you draw unchi-kun?

You know, I've never tried it. Let me give it a shot.

By the way, I'll be taking requests for voice and doodle regeneration now.

I've never played any MR's but I'm really interested, and suggestions on which one I should start on?

            WORDS?

            Reaganomics, canasta, hodai, and fundy-thumper.

            PICTURES?

I'd suggest drawing a butt, a skull and a bomb. Doesn't all have to be in the same picture, though.

Re: Monster Rancher DS (Game Obtained; Analysis In Progress)

The monster Dr. Slump's Unchi-Kun gives is locked at the moment.

Other turds give me a pure Abisu.

If you want to begin with Monster Rancher, the best place to start would be either MR2 or MR3. However, the one you start off with will set your preferences for the series.

              Now for the suggestions:

              Small butts:

              Golem

              Hare

              A number of locked breeds

I get lots of different results depending on the size of the butt and its location on the grid. If it's tilted a bit diagonally, I also get a bunch of locked stuff.

A gigantic butt spanning the whole grid gave me a pure Mocchi, while a similarly large hairy butt gave me a Mocchi-Modoki. Go figure.

A big skull gave me an Abisu/Plant. A big skull drawn whilst holding the DS like a book got me a Pixie. Other angles get me locked monsters. I'll try more smaller skulls later, but one got me a type of Golem.

Bombs give me nothing but locked monsters.

My attempt at drawing a Beaklon got me a Baku-Modoki. Wow.

If this gets localized my plans to replace my DS with a PSP are shot to hell. Which isn't really a bad thing.

                    Voice results!

                    Reganomics: Tiger/Zan

                    Ronald Regan Impression Reganomics: Abisu/Piroro

                    Canasta: Locked

RRI Canasta: Falco/Ogyo (Think Ogyo, but with the body of a buff werewolf-bird)

                    Hodai: Piroro/Zan

RRI Hodai: Falco/Mew (Similar body shape to Falco/Ogyo, but with the head of a Mew as its face)

                    Fundy-Thumper: Locked

                    RRI Fundy-Thumper: Falco/Ogyo

RRI "Well..." (I had to do it): Falco/Mew

Well, this is interesting. It seems that you can get lots of Falcos from doing a Ronald Regan impression, due to the similar sounds of the words under the breathy voice.

                    Let me try a republican.

Futurama Richard Nixon Blubbery "Arroo!": Mahjongkoro (Colorpandora/?)

Futurama Richard Nixon Blubbery "Fl-l-l-lab-itis": Locked

                    Nixon (Normal voice): Locked

Re: Monster Rancher DS (Game Obtained; Analysis In Progress)

Alright, it's time to talk about life on the ol' Monster Farm!

Going back to basics, you can only have one monster on the ranch at any given time. Your monster prances around on the top screen, enjoying the fresh air and doing amusing things, just like MR2. On the bottom screen, you can see a map of the land, showing your barn, house and "special tree", along with you monster's current position and where it's going. By tapping anywhere on the map, your monster will make its way there. However, if its loyalty is low, you'll have a hard time getting it to go anywhere. Your monster may end up finding some useful items hidden abouts the ranch this way, so it's a good idea to scan the place a bit every now and again.

The game follows the same weekly system the series has used since its inception, only now an additional factor has been added. Monster Rancher DS now has a day/night cycle. As you go abouts playing with your monster and running errands in town, time will pass gradually. This is indicated by a day/night dial. As such, the game's weeks now consist of seven days, Monday through Sunday. As the day/night dial passes night-time, a new day begins. If this happens on the last day of the week, the following week will start, regardless of whether or not you actually did anything that week. It apparently counts as rest. I'd say it takes about 7-10 minutes for a day to pass. After a drill or rest, the rest of the week is skipped and your monster wakes up around early Monday morning. When you turn on your DS to start playing, or continue after saving, the time of day will depend on the DS' clock.

Time does not pass while your assistant is talking, an event is occuring, whilst shopping and shrining, &cetera. Things like checking your monster's status or the book will also halt the passage of time. I also feel it necessary to mention that you're brought back to the title screen after saving, where your monster stands near the gate of the ranch, watching you endearingly. Time doesn't pass there, either. These are the apt times to put your DS to sleep, as time will continue to pass otherwise, even if the console's lid is closed.

With the exception of battles, the whole game can be controlled via the touch screen. All the menu options are displayed there, and you can tap the screen to advance through text. Likewise, you can use the D-Pad to control everything, except for exploring the ranch with your monster, doodle regeneration and the like. The menu options at the ranch are the usual fare. There's the drills, the resting, the items, the tourney schedule, visiting town, checking status and saving.

Early on, you'll only have access to the light drills. But as you go advance through the game, you'll eventually be able to do heavy drills as well. Rest, items, status and saving are pretty much self-explanatory.

Like MR1 and 2, you can compete in tournaments of the same rank as your monster and one rank above. By winning an official tourney, you'll go up a rank. My monster hasn't gotten past Rank D just yet, so I don't know if you can still compete in lower-ranked tourneys after moving on up. I'll talk about battles in detail later.

Speaking of battles, be wary. Stray monsters may attack your ranch every now and then at the start of the month.

Now, about the "special tree" I mentioned earlier. Early tests found that monsters tend to live for over 2 years (Yes, monster death has returned. I personally missed that sentimental bit). However, this changed when a strange merchant offered to make it bigger. After that, the monsters ended up living a whole year longer. It doesn't look like that was the last tree upgrade, either. In addition, the life-extending peaches make a welcome return to the series proper.

I meant to mention this in the first part of the analysis, but a number of the menu sound effects were taken from Monster Rancher Evo.

That should do for now. Next time, I'll go into detail about the battles, and maybe Venture once I get enough hands-on experience with it.

And for those of you who are curious, the monster I'm currently raising is Kwagwar the horny Hornie (Suezo/Tiger).

Well I can get MR3 at a nearby EB Games, so I'll have to check that out. Are the GBA MR's any good?
