    Re: Sleepywolf's art gallery

If my drawings aren't original (besides the first one) then I don't know what is...I made all of those completely up myself and outta my own head, and I have always had that style of drawing since I was a kid.

He meant copying someone else's style. And with the "having this style since childhood" I would suggest experimenting with different styles. I have no problem with your style, but it is always good for an artist to mess with and even combine different things. However, for all I know you have been doing so. I've only seen 4 works, after all.

Give the guy a break he's still young. Gloom always says he used to just rip off anime and stuff too, doesn't he?

Anyway, sleepywolf, you have a ton of potential I think. What everyone else is saying to you pretty much condenses down to the fact that you are a good artist, but you won't be a great artist until you come into your own. It'll come to you if you practice more and take advantage of life drawing.

Your work reminds me of my drawings in middle and high school. You've got talent but you need to cultivate it. I've got some advice that I learned on my journey.

First, is really obvious that you're drawing inspiration from Nomura and there’s nothing wrong with that. An important part of developing your style is to find other artists you like and mimicking their techniques. That being said I would advise you to try drawing and creating characters in a style that is nothing like Nomura’s. By working in a verity of styles you’ll expand and increase your range and when you draw in your regular style your drawings will be richer because of it. It will also remove the stink of fan boyishness that surrounds your work. There’s nothing wrong with fan art. Heck! My claim to fame is a Nintendo Comic of all things, but a piece like your “Square” picture reek of amateurishness and is pretty embarrassing. Also, realize that many people consider Nomura a terrible character designer and a hack in many ways. If you’re looking to get a job at character design you could find much better inspiration.

And a word about “style.” At this point in your development you should avoid creating a style of your own like the plague. You should be trying a verity of techniques and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. As you draw more and more you’ll find yourself drawn to certain techniques and choices over others. And naturally you’ll develop a style of your own. Avoid defending your work against criticism by stating that this is your “style.” It comes across as pretentious. “Style” is no excuse for sloppy or lazy art. And not having an understanding of proportion, anatomy, or 3D rendering.

Finally, the advice that no one wants to hear but is vitally important: draw from life and study anatomy. An understanding of how the body looks and is put together is going to make your cartoons and designs so much better. You have to understand what the human body is before you can start messing or adorning it. Drawing from life will also give you an understanding of how people move and pose. This will help remove the stiffness that is present in your drawings.

And remember: Draw! Draw! Draw! Everyday! It doesn’t matter if you’re drawing the most derivative and ugly pictures ever. If you do it everyday you will get better. But, I don’t think this is an issue with you. I’ve got a feeling you draw every day anyway.

I like your work. It’s rough but I see good things coming from you. Keep posting your stuff. I want to see more.

One last thing, learn how to resize your work on the computer. It’s a little too big.

                  Your craftsmanship/handling-of-materials is very good!

I would say that the best thing you could do for your drawing talent is to study and draw human anatomy, as others have said. You may not be able to get into some life drawing classes right now, so you could find yourself a good artistic anatomy book and start drawing. If you lightly drew your characters in the buff first (I'm serious) and then drew their costumes, armor and accessories over the top of their accurate proportions, you should start coming away with poses that are more natural and less stiff. The drawings you produce from such exercises will still "feel" like your own style and yet will have evolved into something more sophisticated.

they look pretty good, dont let the harsher criticism hurt, but take the advice given with a grain of salt. what loki said is indeed very good advice, especially this quote:

"Finally, the advice that no one wants to hear but is vitally important: draw from life and study anatomy. just as the greatest writers study the english language, and the history of life, so too should an artist study the human body. the more realistic your poses looks, the more believable your character will be even if nothing in life is like it, it will just have a natural flow.

i have no talent as far as drawing, but i do appreciate good artwork that mimics life like qualities and does so in a new way not seen in life.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!
